When did you first start drawing/designing seriously?
My mom used to tell a story from when I was about four, a nursery school teacher said, “Marcy, when you grow up, do you want to be an artist?” I replied, “I already am an artist!” I developed cartoons based on my friends and our adventures, spent hours figuring out how to hand-letter skateboarding logos, illustrated album backer cards at my high school job as a record store clerk — but after i got a degree in Graphic Design from the University of Illinois, I started getting paid to do art and design. How do ya like them apples!

Which decade do you think had the best music?
Huge music fan from all decades and so many genres. Punk rock, classical, jazz, funk, soul, Americana, rock n’ roll, ska, power pop… there’s so much in there I could never narrow it down!

How many people work for/with you?
We are fortunate to work with so many smart, talented, good people. I am based in my St. Louis studio, we have an awesome advisor for marketing and business in Montana, and we have a two incredible teams of designers from all over the world who show the possibilities with our stamp designs: the Bloom Brigade and the Instant Gardeners. I have excellent vendors and distribution folks, too. Also, my kids help pack up orders. 🙂

What was the first product you ever had for sale?
For the longest time I didn’t create products, I worked as a graphic designer, botanical illustrator, and magazine art director helping other folks promote and sell their wonderful products. 10 years ago I started a design and branding studio, working for all kinds of clients, from entrepreneurs to global companies, and I still operate this business. I launched Power Poppy by Marcella Hawley in 2014. My very first product was the Azalea stamp set, and it remains one of our best sellers.

Name your favorite cartoon.
Old school Bugs Bunny. Grew up watching Looney Tunes and still am entertained by the humor and cleverness of the team that put those together. Big fan of Mel Blanc. Those cartoons helped shape my sense of humor! Along with Stan Freberg, Three Stooges, and my dad.

Favorite quote?
Again, I have so many! But this one by gardener Alan Lacy sums me up pretty well: “I was born in the spring and never got over it.”

What’s your favorite craftroom/business supply or tool that you couldn’t live without?
Sakura Pigma Micron pens/Bristol illustration board, and my trusty Mac loaded up with the Adobe Creative Cloud apps.

When you get the midnight munchies… what do you grab?
Cheezits are my downfall. So I really try not to buy them, or I will eat the whole box.

If your parents had named you something else… what would you have picked?
That is a great question! As a kid, I wished my parents had named me, and this is how I would spell it, “Anjelikka” — and oh, how I am grateful that they did not take me up on this concept. I’m named after the little girl in the Raggedy Ann series of books by Johnny Gruelle, which was also the name of his daughter: Marcella.

If you were getting a tattoo… what would it be?
While my guy has a bunch of tattoos, I have harbored no desire to get one. I mean, once you get it, there it is forever. That said, recently I started seeing gorgeous botanical tattoos of a few artists on Instagram, so beautifully done and without the thick black outline…. wouldn’t a wisp of rosemary intertwined with a budding peony be kind of cool?

What is your best and worst personality trait?
Best trait: I’m a positive person and I like to bring a positive spark to others, even by just being cheerful to you know, the gas station checkout guy up the street. That just might make him feel a little more cheerful, and then he’ll pass it on, and so forth.
Worst trait: Extreme over-scheduler, over-complicator and procrastinator. So, I guess that is three worst things. Good thing I’m so positive or that could be really depressing!

What is your favorite piece in the whole store?
It is so hard to pick a favorite, I’m sure you hear that all the time, but they are all my babies. I’m a fan of the “more is more” school of thought, so my true favorites tend to be the more rich and intricate images. One that I am very proud of is Daffodils, and particularly in that set, I love the bouquet of multiple Daffodil varieties bundled with Muscari. When I see what crafters do with this image, I almost feel like crying. Folks are so talented, and it’s just really heartwarming to watch how each person uniquely brings my artwork to life.

Gotta pick a favorite digital stamp, too, Spring Meadow Bouquet. I am all about seeking out, celebrating, and illustrating plants that aren’t the most popular or in the mainstream. Everybody can draw a daisy. I like to draw Fritillaria meleagris, Leucojum aestivum, Dicentra spectabilis… I’m a plant nerd to the core. I hope to convert others to more exotic plants, and help teach them that there is more to life than Tulips. Though I do enjoy Tulips. 🙂

If you were reincarnated…who would you have been in a former life?

Gosh, I would love to think that it was someone like Gertrude Jekyll, the British horticulturist and garden designer. But it was probably more like an odd Trillium plant out in the woods somewhere.

What’s your favorite color?
All shades of green. I am passionate about green – the essence of plants, moss, lichen, ahhhhhh green.

When no one is listening…. do you sing in the shower?
I sing in the shower whether or not someone is listening. Also, in the car and at my desk

MarcellaHawley_FrontsideGrind

Do you plan to grow old gracefully, or disgracefully?
Ha! Well, let’s see, I still go skateboarding at age 45, and a few years ago, got my motorcycle license and started riding off road and on the street. I don’t know if I’ll go out, as Doug hopes to: “worn down like the nub of a pencil”, but I hope to live it up as long as I can, and not complain about feeling old. I took my boy to see AC/DC earlier this year, and watching those 60-70 year old dudes rocking extremely hard for two hours without showing an iota of tiredness — that moved me. If Angus Young can do it, I can do it!

If you were a classic car…. what would you be?
I’d be my zippy little 1974 Yamaha RD60 café-racer-style motorcycle, in metallic turquoise with racing stripes.

Who is your inspiration/muse?
I have so many, from artists and designers such as Tasha Tudor, Botticelli, Josef Frank, Mary Engelbreit, Susie Cooper, Redouté, Lulu Guinness, and writers/thinkers such as Henry David Thoreau, Anais Nin, and Wayne Dyer. Gardeners and plant hybridizers inspire me. Doug’s zest for life inspires me. But it all begins with my mother, Susan. She was and is my muse. She instilled so much encouragement, love, and genuine care for us, not to mention keen interest in art, gardening, decorating, collecting. I am into all of those things because of her opening our minds to exploration. My mom’s mantra was “act enthusiastic and you’ll be enthusiastic!” Boy, was she ever that. I miss her more than words can say, she passed away in February from breast cancer. She ruled so hard.

I painted this image of my mom for a magazine article

What’s your guilty pleasure?

Sharing a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc with the love of my life, Doug, drinking from supercool handblown glasses by Missouri artist, Kaeka Maehata (http://www.kaekomaehata.com/Home.html), sitting in bed watching The Unbreakable Kimmie Schmidt on Netflix.

What job did you have BEFORE you started drawing/designing for a living?
I worked as a hostess and a server at the Olive Garden in college. Hospitalino y’all. (Of course I found a way to commandeer the chalk board and hand-lettered the welcome sign and today’s specials!)

If you could hang out with ANYONE in the world ….  who would it be?….and what is the one question you would want to ask them?

Oh man. I would have to say zenmaster Thich Naht Hanh. I don’t have anything I could even ask, I would just bask in his calm presence, his peaceful knowing, his smile. He is the wisest person alive in my opinion.

MarcellaHawley_herbtags

What’s your favorite hobby when you want to relax?
Gardening, cooking for pleasure, reading decorating magazines. I find it challenging to really let down, so relaxing for me often involves still doing something.

What was your favorite subject in school?
It usually wasn’t the subject as much as the teacher who inspired me to enjoy the material. As such, I had a great experience in Trigonometry and Analytic Geometry, even though I don’t “like” math. The inspiring teacher was key! Am fascinated by history, but had several snorefest teachers along the way that made it brutal to sit through. I’m curious about English and Literature, History, Philosophy, Religions … anything in the Art & Design Studio, especially Typography, and all areas of Art & Design History

Who was your first celebrity crush…and have you drawn them?
I would draw all of the boys I had a crush on, celebrity or not, from Maxwell Caulfield, the star of Grease 2, to a huge watercolor of Martin Gore from Depeche Mode that I used in my portfolio to get into the Fine Arts program. In fact, I still like to draw cute boys.

If you weren’t doing what you are doing now…. what job would you have?
I wrestle with that one. On one hand, I can see going to get an MBA. I’m fascinated with strategy and creating a message, and I would love to know more about the business side of things. I also love being involved in branding and design and being a part of big ideas, but at this phase of life with young children, I do not want to get so caught up in something that I can’t be there to pick them up from school and go to their ballgames, and just enjoy each moment of life before they go off to college. Then again, there are days when the idea of running away to a little cabin and pulling a Thoreau seems quite lovely. “Launch yourself on every wave!”

Would you go cave diving with sharks?
That comment above about launching yourself on every wave… I would not do that if there were sharks involved.

How long does the average design/art work take from concept to final product?
I take forever, and work very intensely on every step. Doug came up with a tagline for me, “Marcy: Making things more complicated than they need to be, since 1971.” It’s really true. We start with a concept for a stamp set, and I’ll roll it around in my mind and research it, discuss it with my trusted advisor, Julie, who will also do research and develop ideas, and sometimes I’ll run it past our brilliant design team members to get their feedback. I’ll go through heaps of magazines and books and read up, I’ll work on sketches, I’ll revise my concept. I’ll go work in the garden, be struck by a flower, and I’ll go in a new direction, then I’ll come back and rework, or start over completely. Eventually – weeks later, maybe months – the “THAT’S IT!” feeling hits me, and I get in my zone and finish up my drawings, take them into ink, scan, run through fine-tuning in Photoshop, search for the perfect fonts or create lettering myself, and send out to our wonderful manufacturers. They turn things around for us very quickly most of the time, and are very patient with my last-minute requests. So, to answer your question, it varies, but it’s a wild ride from start to finish. 🙂

Spotlight Series Day 27, Sarah – StarStampz

Who are you ? Sarah, though I can go by Star online and with friends. My website / art studio is “StarInMyPocket,” a line a liked from a poem I wrote when I was young. My usual username online is StarMasayume (Masayume meaning ‘dream’s come true’ which I added so I had a name ID that is always available..)

stazlogo

Where are you ? In a land of sunshine (aka Florida)

When did you first start drawing/designing seriously? I doodled most of my life and for my “career” cube in 6th grade I chose artist which I discarded after as being unreleastic lol. When I was 12 I got a spark after discovering the anime Sailor Moon and would copy paused scenes on my VHS recordings, followed by finding Naoko’s gorgeous manga illustrations online and copying those. I stopped drawing for nearly 2 years feeling I was only good at copying, but my interest renewed another 2 years later after discovering digital art and oekaki board communities online. It was hook line and sinker from there!

starbookelf

The Book Elf

What was the first product you ever had for sale? I’m not even sure. I began selling art prints and stickers at a convention in 2005. Years later I began putting my art items on Etsy, everything from keychains and buttons to sketchbooks and bookmarks. I opened my digital stamp store (Star Stampz) more recently but uploaded a number of them at once. “The Book Elf” is among my older arts

When was your last REAL vacation and where did you go? Not far but recently went to Disney to celebrate my 30th birthday as I hadn’t been there since I was 4 and always wanted to go back. I figured if I was going to turn the big 3-0 might as well do it with my BF, her husband, and my fiance where my inner kid could gush freely.

What’s your favorite horror movie? So I am NOT a huge fan of horror genre, but there’s one Japanese movie I love enough to rewatch many times. Hansel and Gretel, a korean horror movie with a creepy “Coraline” feel. A young man crashes his car, getting lost and trapped in the woods where a family lives and the children aren’t what they seem. Their sweet cottage and toys alone give you the eebie jeebies but the plot twists are great and I like the twisted fairy tale aspect.

Princesses Collection

Princesses Collection

What is your favorite piece in the whole store? There’s many I’m fond of for different reasons which makes it so hard to choose. I will go with my princess set though as I LOVE fairy tales and Disney.

Name your favorite cartoon? Sailor Moon? I love it enough to put themes of it in my wedding after all lol. Though if we’re going for a list… that would get very very long. You can check out myanimelist profile for all my favorites.

What  job did you have BEFORE you started  drawing/designing for a living?
Waldenbooks (I think half of my paycheck went there), followed by caricature artist at Busch Gardens, SEO/graphic design at a local startup web design company, and assistant for a successful invitation business by an entrapreneuring mom. This is my first year I’m solely freelancing which I was nervous but excited about.

What was your favorite subject in school…? English. If I didn’t get so hooked into art I would be writing books. Instead, I just have a lot of unfinished fanfiction.  =P

Alice Chibi

Alice Chibi

What is your most popular item in the store/shop? Definitely my Alice Chibi digital stamp

If you got locked in an elevator for 6 hours.. who would you most like to be locked in with ? Does a book count???

starcrush

Who was your first celebrity crush…and have you drawn them? It took me until my twenties, but I fell in love with Mate Kamaras after seeing him as Death in the German musical “Elisabeth.” He’s gorgeous with a beautiful sexy singing voice and not to mention trilingual and also played the same role in Japan (in which he reminds me of Jareth from the Labyrinth which I have no problem with).  If you enjoy musicals, do yourself a favor and  youtube it! And yes I have drawn him…  Elisabeth The Last Dance Art Print

How long have you been in business? I’ve had business cards to my art website since I was 14? lol People would see me sketching everywhere so I would hand them out. I’d say 2005 as for how long I’ve been actually selling my art. Jacon, one of my favorite conventions, chose my art for their light/darkness theme on the con guides and badges so I got a free dealer’s table which was awesome and really the start of it all.

How long does the average design/art work take from concept to final product?  For full digitally painted art, anywhere from a day or two to weeks sometimes months if I put something aside and pick at it.

starzview

When you are working, what is the view from your window like? I love the backyard view from my two story window! <3 I’m so going to miss it if/when I move. It looks awesome when it’s raining.

What’s the one song guaranteed to have you shaking your booty anytime, anyplace ..anywhere? I have a tie for two currently…  Boku ni Invitation (from the anime Polar Bear Cafe) and You’ll Be Back (a broadway song… just look up Hawk Moth’s Ballad on youtube lol)

Autumn Fall Girl Reading

Autumn Fall Girl Reading

Show me the drawing you think most closely resembles you physically or personality-wise. Autumn Fall Girl Reading

What do you love most about all the people you meet through your work? Connecting with people all around the world and those with similar loves and interests. I was always the shy loner in school as a kid but art has helped me meet so many great friends and people so I feel really blessed by it. <3 Sometimes the people I meet suggest or introduce me to new things which is also great.

Which drawing/product are you the most proud of in your collection? “Alice in Wonderland” from StarInMyPocket  from my ink / digital stamps “Maiko in Spring”

Spotlight Series Day 26 – Me, Myself & I

Well my day 26 Spotlight guest had some technical issues… so we have no Day 26 Spotlight Guest….

Soooo .. you got me instead.  I guess it’s only fair if I am going to ask everyone else to answer all these questions…I should probably do it too.  Now  there is the small fact that I’m not an artist, I’m not a designer…. and I’m not a small craft business owner.

… and only a handful of people really care what I  think,or who I am …. but if you ignore those facts…. LOL

anyways.. for anyone  who just wants to follow the series anyway…. here you go 🙂

——————-

Who are you? MsWipz  – CraftingCircle.com/Bloggit <<that’s here in case you didn’t know lol

Where are you? Scottish, living in Texas, US of A

Would you go cave diving with sharks?  Can’t swim.. so no.. but I would love to Kayak with the Orcas up in the San Juan Islands.

When did you first start drawing/designing seriously?  Never, first off I can’t draw a stickman…and secondly…I don’t do serious  🙂

What was the first product you ever had for sale?  I don’t sell my work, I am too self critical and I am a relative newbie  at this whole handcoloring card making shenanigans. I’ve given projects away and I have done a huge project for the cost of materials… but that is as  close to “business” as it gets.
I did do a Christmas note set for a friend and she sent me a Michaels GC as a thank you… but I don’t think that counts either.
The Shaker windows I sell are practically at cost when you add in supplies and shipping and driving them to what I like to call my  “miracle worker ” post office who can  usually deliver in 2 days haha.. gotta love them…it is worth the drive…so I don’t class that as a business either.

If you were getting a tattoo… what would it be? I have 3 VERY old tattoos…..if I were to get another one it would most likely be a bullseye on my butt cheek… I always wanted one of those for when I wear my worn out Levis …. *grin

What is your best and worst personality trait?   I’m honest.. it has its up and downsides

What’s your favorite horror movie?  without a doubt.. the original Hellraiser..Pinhead was the hottest piece of dead flesh a girl could lust after back in his day

locke_pyramid1

What is your favorite piece in the whole store?

No store, but if I had to pick a favorite piece since I started making cards and such…. it would still have to be my KennyK Capt Locke card.

This was my first real outside the box  project and my first attempt at 3D Decoupage and foam padding.  My neighbor keeps trying to steal this one lol.

If you were a Cluedo Character, who would you be?   way my life goes… probably whoever is dead lol ..

When was your last REAL vacation and where did you go?  No idea.. must have been a long time ago.  I sure could use one though.

If you got offered a weekend in a haunted  house/castle etc.. would you say yes? Absolutely heck yeah…  I was always one of those “I’ll believe it when I see it kind of people”

… and then I saw it.. them.  I’ve had a few “encounters”

If you suddenly changed careers and went to work at Disney…what character would you want to be?  Tinkerbell..  but they reserve that role for a man in tights apparently  lol..or at least they did.   But flying off the top of the Disney Castle would be hella cool.

If you were reincarnated…who would you have been in a former life?   hmm  I dunno, but you can bet it wasn’t someone demure and ladylike.  I’d have been someone like Calamity Jane.  I’m not a girly girl.

Who is your inspiration/muse?   My warped humor….I think.  When I see an image I like I let my humor kick in and see if it’s something I can work with.

SD_Honey_Ruler_wmd

How many people work with/for you?

Just me and my son, he is 4 and hijacks my craft space and projects.  He is my art critic and director too LOL

You may see references to him at times on my project posts… like my recent Scrapper’s Delights DT project ..where he photobombed my card  picture taking session with an angry bird ..I literally got photobombed by Bomb.

Name your favorite cartoon? Betty Boop, not that I ever see it…  all I see nowadays is Curious George, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Transformers lol

Favorite quote?  “Best friend or worst enemy, pick a side” … by me  LOL

What’s your guilty pleasure?  hahaha .. how long  do you have?

Foodwise… It would have to be Bacci Chocloate, fresh unsliced bread smothered in real butter…. with Heinz Tomato Soup which I rarely ever get anymore now I live in the US…  and slices of REAL salami from a whole sausage .. not the pre sliced stuff you get in the store…I’m talking 1/2  inch chunky slices lol… my ex FIL was Italian and we used to get whole salamis from the restaurant he worked in. *sigh…

What  job did you have BEFORE you started  drawing/designing for a living?
Well.. I don’t .. but anywho lol

I’m a stay at home mom nowadays.. previous job was working as a claim asst. in claims for FMLA and disability etc .. handling them for large corporations.  Before that I worked as an admin in an oil & gas company… I’ve also worked in Distribution and done voluntary work,   webmistress, and back in the early days fun things like produce packaging

… I  can trim and  wrap a mean Cauliflower I tellya !

If you could hang out with ANYONE in the world ….  who would it be?….and what is the one question you would want to ask them?

My stepdaughter.. she lives in Australia now and  I haven’t seen her  face to face in  just over 10 years  :/  and have only met my son in law  once…and never met my granddaughter.   I may not be with her dad nowadays but she’s still my kid to me… even at 35 lol.

hmm what would I ask her….  “can I have your combat boots… I had to leave mine in California?” lol

What’s your favorite color?  Black

What was your favorite subject in school…?  Phys Ed I think .. school was not a fun time for me…

When no one is listening…. do you sing in the shower?
heck no….   my own kid used to pretend to be asleep so I would stop singing to him… nope I don’t even wanna hear me sing.

If you weren’t doing what you are doing now…. what job would you have?
I’d love to be a storm chaser.. but is that a real job??  maybe an independent photographer/storm chaser… I love photographing lightning.  But I wouldn’t give up my current job for anything… my son is my fulltime 24/7  and you can’t beat the benefits of this job.

What’s your favorite craftroom/business supply or tool that you couldn’t live without?

lately…. my Kuretake pohoto Tape.… that stuff is fab and is the best tape I have tried so far for my foam sheets.

What is the one question you are really glad I didn’t ask ….and dare you answer it anyway? Lol   Hahaha  No..  not happening… not because I am shy,  .. far from it .. I will answer almost ANYTHING but some things are best left unspoken and not archived for eternity on a search engine haha

.. and I have discovered over the years  that a warning should come attached to questions aimed at me… and I quite often do issue it…  “be careful what you ask, you may well get the honest answer…. are you SURE you want it”

If you got locked in an elevator for 6 hours.. who would you most like to be locked in with?  Someone funny… as long as they aren’t a secret agoraphobic…  It would be just my luck to spend 6 hours trying to keep someone else calm and not strangle them lol.

I’d probably pick..Eddy Izzard, Jo Brand, Graham Norton, Rowan Atkinson… old school comedians

…… you know what.. no I wouldn’t I’d pick a president or  royalty or something…. you know there aint no way they leaving  someone important stuck in no elevator for 6 hours.

But wait… what if it was impossible to get them out and I got trapped with say… Camilla Parker Bowles or Charles or something… at least give me Kate, Harry…. or Prince Phillip.. he has no filter… at least he’d be fun lol.

When you get the midnight munchies… what do you grab?  depends on my mood…and what’s at hand… cheetos, cereal, toast, pop tarts, ice cream.. I’m not fussy

What’s your favorite event, or holiday of the year? All of them now I have my son…. before that.. holidays weren’t my thing.. my family put the ‘strange in estranged’… and sadly; I am  actually the normal one in my family….aint that some scary Stuff!

If your parents had named you something else… what would you have picked?  I always wanted to be called Penelope, after Penelope Pittstop in the Wacky Races Cartoon…. Now I am older.. not so enamored with her, she was a bit of a useless chick LOL

What should be written on your gravestone when you die?  “so.. you gonna sleep now?”

Do you secretly watch WWE wrestling when no one is around?  Used to watch it back in the day when Hulk Hogan and the Warrior were around… haven’t seen it in years

If you were offered a trip to the moon, would you go..and if so .. which of your images/products would leave on the moon??  I don’t know that I would… motherhood has made me less of a daredevil .. If I was single and not a mom..hell yeah in a heart beat.

I remember  back in my teens watching the Jean Michel Jarre, Rendez Vous Houston concert and thinking how amazing  it would have been if they had actually got to record that first music in space as planned. Me and my friends at the time were huge Jarre fans… The tribute to the Challenger Crew  is something I don’t think I will ever experience  the likes of in this lifetime… I don’t think a concert nowadays will ever have the impact of this one.  He closed down Houston Freeways and brought over a million people together for something beautiful.  I never thought 30 years ago I’d be sitting here in Texas myself lol.

“The last track on the album was originally scheduled to include a saxophone part recorded by astronaut Ron McNair on the Space Shuttle Challenger, making it the first piece of music to be recorded in space, but on 28 January 1986, 73 seconds after lift-off, the shuttle disintegrated and the entire Challenger crew were killed. The track was dedicated to McNair and the other astronauts on board Challenger.” Wikepedia

His Laser Harp and choir have to be one of the coolest things I have seen and heard.  Since then.. Rendezvous will forever be one of my favorite albums of all time.  It’s worth a listen 🙂

If you think you have never heard his music, check out the video links. You may be surprised to know you actually probably do recognize his work from  things like  the penguin and antarctica special.

Which decade do you think had the best music?  I’m very eclectic in my taste in music… I would have to say anything from the 50’s on would have something I like…. but I also love some classical and opera. .. so anything from Slade and The Bay City Rollers, to Britney Spears and  Rhiana, Pavarotti to  Buddy Holly..

Have you ever been on a blind date…. and if so..  was it fun, or a nightmare?  Nope was married at 17 .. the first time.  I don’t think I ever had a blind date so to speak..I’ve had a few blind drunk ones… does that count *grin

What’s your favorite hobby when you want to relax?  World of Warcraft, not that I have time to play lately.

Do you plan to grow old gracefully, or disgracefully?   I never planned to grow old …  so I can’t answer that one ..I’ll have to wait n see.

elvira

If you were a classic car…. what would you be?  Elvira’s 58 T bird

What’s the one song guaranteed to have you shaking your booty anytime, anyplace ..anywhere?  anything with a good beat … rock pop, reggae, rock opera…If it got beat I’m shaking that thing!

Who scared you most as a kid when you were being naughty.. your parents or the boogey man?  the person named on my birth certificate as father.. .. the boogey man was a pussycat  in comparison.

What do you love most about all the people you meet through your work?  I’ve met so many cool people through crafting…the variety of backgrounds and characters is fabulous…. all with a common thread.  I’ve also met some not so fun, or cool people… but that is one of the joys of the internet.

🙂

Spotlight Series Day 25 – Christine, Penny Blossom

Where are you ?

I am Maltese and live in Malta which is a little island in the Mediterranean

When did you first start drawing/designing seriously?

I have always liked drawing and painting and I chose Art as my main subject at secondary school. There was no turning back since then 🙂

What is your favorite piece in the whole store?

I think I would go for the latest which is Little Red Riding Hood

LittleRed_watermark_sm

Who is your inspiration/muse?

Oh this is a tough one! I think inspiration is something ongoing and sometimes little things tend to inspire me without really thinking much about it. These are things that at one point come in the foreground! I am also inspired by many different artists but surprisingly sometimes it is not even their style of work that inspires me but the fact that I see them practicing their art. This instils in me a longing to work on my own art. Then there are also many art styles such as manga art, pop surrealism, and art nouveau which I really feel that I am attracted to.

How many people work with/for you ?

I don’t have other people working with me but I’m very grateful that my husband takes care of the technical side of Penny Blossom…I send him a big thanks 🙂

Name your favorite cartoon?

Anything Disney!

Favorite quote?

Life is like a garden, you reap what you sow.

What’s your guilty pleasure ?

Binge watching TV series when I have the luxury to do so, buying and hoarding art supplies, having cappuccino and cake.

What’s your favorite color?

Purple has always been a favourite…then there are the periodic obsessions…which right now is duck egg blue

What was your favorite subject in school…?

I love many subjects. Art was obviously a favourite but at the same time I also liked sciences and studied them in parallel.

If you were getting a tattoo… what would it be?

If I was not too concerned with the permanence of tattoos I would get two small butterflies on my hipline…one of my digis shows something similar to what I like 🙂

If you got offered a weekend in a haunted  house/castle etc.. would you say yes?

As much as I love castles and beautiful historical places I think I would chicken out!

When no one is listening…. do you sing in the shower?

Oh a big yes….and even when people are listening…before I got married my family had to put up with a lot of singing lol 🙂

What is your most popular item in the store/shop?

From the images that were given as a freebie for some time it will have to be Vigilante. Another popular image from the shop is A little Gift.

ImageA-Little-Gift

If you weren’t doing what you are doing now…. what job would you have?

This is another tough one….I like so many things….in another lifetime I would consider an airline pilot, an archaeologist, psychologist….well the list goes on 🙂

How long have you been in business?

I have started Penny Blossom four years ago in 2012 …..but had to put it on the back burner for some time while I was doing my doctoral research….I have been active again only recently

What’s your favorite craftroom/business supply or tool that you couldn’t live without?

I love so many things but I would choose something really basic….good quality paper and a few sharpened pencils

If you got locked in an elevator for 6 hours.. who would you most like to be locked in with ?

Gerald Butler 🙂

When you get the midnight munchies… what do you grab?

I don’t have the habit of snacking during the night…but if I feel hungry in the evening then I have to eat something or else I wouldn’t be able to sleep…usually it will be a ham and cheese toast or something savoury…won’t have sweets if I’m hungry

What’s your favorite event, or holiday of the year?

My birthday which comes in October and Christmas 🙂

What’s your favorite hobby when you want to relax

My work is in a way a hobby as well so I do consider drawing and painting as my hobby. Then if I am lucky and get some extra free time I love to do make-up…try out different products and looks…which in some way still involves colours, palettes and brushes 🙂

How long does the average design/art work take from concept to final product?

It varies for different images but on average it takes from 6 to 8 hours from the concept to having the final digi ready in the shop

When you are working, what is the view from your window like

I work in different places…some of my favourite work was done in coffee shops for example. I also spend quite some time in the studio and here the view is partly of buildings and partly of a lovely valley.

What’s the one song guaranteed to have you shaking your booty anytime, anyplace ..anywhere?

Right now that would be “If it Ain’t Love” by Derulo

What do you love most about all the people you meet through your work?

Their unique ways of seeing things and their unique interpretations. I also appreciate the honest feedback and the great support from other artists as well as from crafters and colourists

Which drawing/product are you the most proud of in your collection?

It is hard to choose because they all have a story or a particular meaning…..

From the older original range……I think the Explorer has particular significance …I also really like Hang in There

explorer

From the latest range I’m proud of Alice (which is a freebie that you can download)

Who are you?

Alyce from Kit and Clowder Online Colouring Classes www.kitandclowder.com

Kit & Clowder Facebook Group

Kit & Clowder Blog

Where are you?

Australia!

When did you first start drawing/designing seriously

Just over two years ago when I turned Kit and Clowder from just my blog to our online colouring class website. Well, I was probably taking it still seriously before then making many many design team cards but I never dreamed that I would be doing this now with our classes 🙂

If you were getting a tattoo… what would it be?

I am so chicken! I would be like Phoebe in Friends where she went to get a tattoo and only got a dot before she pulled out hahaa! I don’t even know what I would get – a cat?

What was the first product you ever had for sale?

Our Skin and Hair class although both the content and the format has changed drastically since the launch!

skinandhair

Who is your inspiration/muse?

My inspiration is everyone who forms Kit and Clowder. I would not be doing this if it weren’t for all of the Clowdies that are part of our group. When I am feeling down I know that I can feel inspired and uplifted by flicking through our Facebook Group and seeing everyone’s work, and also when people post non-craft related stuff. It makes me feel excited that people like to share their lives with us and makes me want to share back.

How many people work with/for you ?

Just me 🙂 But Jon, Mr Clowdie, is my sounding board behind the scenes. I also have some really close friends that I have met since doing this that I know I can discuss about any topic/run through any idea and they 100% support me and tell me if my ideas are bad! 🙂

Name your favorite cartoon?

Oh my… everything Disney? Does Pixar count as cartoon? If we are going movie I would say Wall-e.. but if it’s cartoon tv it is Pokemon

5a7e49_73e4e7d61af9469cb763b1dc8a4e0a22

If you suddenly changed careers and went to work at Disney…what character would you want to be?

ELSA! Or Anna! Or Belle! Or Cinderella! Or Rapunzel! Or Pin Manager!

Which decade do you think had the best music?

90s!!! Spice Girls! hahaaa!

What’s your favorite hobby when you want to relax

I like to read, sing, or play computer games with Jon 🙂

If you were reincarnated…who would you have been in a former life.

Cat – fluffy cat wanting lots of cuddles and food

When no one is listening…. do you sing in the shower?

I sing in the shower, not in the shower, and frequently get caught out by the postman.

kit_class

What is your most popular item in the store/shop?

Our Skin and Hair Class

Who was your first celebrity crush…and have you drawn them?

Probably Angel from Buffy hahaa! No I haven’t drawn him hahaa!

If you got locked in an elevator for 6 hours.. who would you most like to be locked in with ?

Joss Whedon and we would talk all things Buffy/Angel/Firefly/Avengers 🙂

What’s your favorite color?

It changes all the time! I like Purple and Aqua at the moment 🙂 But I really love all colours and having bright colours around makes me feel happy 🙂

5a7e49_c03823ba2d274ae8bef5d23664acbf30

Would you go cave diving with sharks?

Uh not this question!! I am currently being persuaded into this for our Honeymoon O_O Sharks are one of my big fears and I think if I saw a Great White I would pass out in the water. I would say no but I think if I don’t say yes I won’t be getting married haha.

What was your favorite subject in school…?

English – I wanted to be a writer and I looove reading

When was your last REAL vacation and where did you go?

Disneyland! We went last year while teaching our US Retreats and it was the BEST!

If you got offered a weekend in a haunted  house/castle etc.. would you say yes?

Yes but I would be so scared! hehe! It really intrigues me because I feel there are so many stories and encounters for there not to be some sort of truth?

When you get the midnight munchies… what do you grab?

I have a bad habit of getting the coffee/chai latte sachets and halving them so I can get more drinks to keep me full! So I have many many of those to try and stop me eating everything in the house. But I usually still do – biscuits and chocolate 🙁

What is your favorite piece in the whole store? nature

Our new Elements of Nature class – I think it is our most professional class and also flowers and nature are really forgiving for people to colour. Skin and Hair is our most popular class but the actually topic itself is much harder so I think sometimes it’s nice for people to take a break and colour some flowers for some great results 🙂 I also love our Monthly Colouring Class as I feel that it really challenges me to come up with the content and I see the best results in this class. I see people improve the quickest here as they are challenging themselves.

Favorite quote?

If you are not failing every now and again, it’s a sign you aren’t doing anything very innovative – Woody Allen

What’s your guilty pleasure ?

Disney. everything.

What  job did you have BEFORE you started  drawing/designing for a living?

Interior Architect

5a7e49_44617ec4ca5b4b40abe46eb545cd99c1 5a7e49_ef07bbe3c09f4bcfa7f23dda73521712

What’s your favorite event, or holiday of the year?

Christmas – I love getting presents for people and get so excited to give them 😀 I can’t sleep on Christmas eve.

How long does the average design/art work take from concept to final product?

Our Technique Classes take about 2-3 months of straight working on them from concept, writing the material, colouring samples, filming, editing, and putting the actual classroom and graphics together. It’s a really long process! It takes longer now than when I first started as I still do our one on one feedback daily which takes a few hours, plus our monthly class, and all of the admin work. So a Technique class probably takes about 4-5 months now.

What’s the one song guaranteed to have you shaking your booty anytime, anyplace ..anywhere?

So many! I love all Taylor Swift 🙂 And anything cheesy hehe

What do you love most about all the people you meet through your work?

I love how supportive everyone is. I feel that people go out of their way to help one another and to make me feel welcome in their lives. I feel that I don’t have customers but I have friends and I’m so lucky to have met so many of our members now and know that we have a real friendship. I feel extremely lucky.

When did you first start drawing/designing seriously

I first started designing and illustrating in 2011, when I started selling digital cutting files for electronic die-cutting machines. It was in 2013 that I started to think about turning some of my designs into stamps. I have always been a crafty girl, and having my own business doing what I love is a dream come true!

I am a child of the 80’s and I still love to listen to the music from then. Turn up the radio, Madonna is on!

I have met some of the most wonderful people! I travel to vendor some conventions and have met and encountered the sweetest people you will ever meet! Which drawing/product are you the most proud of in your collection?

If you asked me 10 years ago if I thought I could make a career at drawing, I would have laughed. I guess I never knew what I could do until I tried and practiced. I went to school for medical technology, so I had to teach myself to illustrate using the computer. It has been a hard road, but has been fun too, and I am most proud of these cute unicorns I recently illustrated. It makes my heart happy to know that others enjoy them as well.
