Stamping and coloring on Plaster of Paris

Yup…I went and done it again lol

went off on another one of my crazy little adventures in crafting.. so who’s along for the ride… All ABOARD !!!

SO.. long story short, one of the girls on one of the Facebook coloring/cardmaking groups I am in.. shared a post about another Facebook Group and this crazy worldwide thing they got going on.  It was late, I was between projects and being as the giveaways ended ..I figured it was hookey time for me..  so I went off to read the article she was a featured artists in and ended up checking out this group.

It’s called Art Abandonment…. some of you may have heard about it already on my Facebook page and wall…  some of you may not.

So anywho.. I decided me and the lil guy just had to get involved in this and so I signed up…. I needed a project that was  cheap, preferably with materials I already have and something both of us could do together..and maybe even get hubby in on  it.  He’s not  the crafty type… but he will try and join in when we ask lol.

The group are fantastic….I wasn’t sure if this was even an idea that would fly as abandoned art.. but they were all totally supportive. So here we are.. and I have yet another crazy project idea to share.

The first batch of abandoned art  me and the lil guy will be doing is these………….. I don’t have a technical term for it.. so call it what you will.  I’m just going to call it “stamped PoP rounds”

Ok so if you follow the blog at all you will remember I picked up some Stazon Ink pads to use on my acetate a week or so ago…. so.. for the record that is also the ink I am using on these projects to stamp with.

The Blank rounds are made with Plaster of Paris, I find craft stores charge too much for too little… so I always try and grab mine at the local DIY store because when I get stuck into projects like this… I’m gonna make a lot.   I actually had  virtually untouched and an unopened bag sitting around already from other project ideas…. so I was sorted.   A 25 lb bag will set you back about $15 at Lowes or Home Depot.

Pop

Mixing instructions come on the pack … but I’m not one to A follow instructions B wait patiently… so I tend to mix mine up a bit thicker and  that speeds up dry time..  that also drops the time you have to shake it around and get air bubbles out and make it nice and smooth… so if you are a newb at this ..try their ratios and don’t mix too much at a time.  The time you save with a thicker mix will be  doubled when you have to start sanding the back flat because you didn’t get it  leveled in time.

Ok molds… molds molds.. you can get sooo many molds for  plaster of paris  silicon, rubber, plastic… just depends on what you are doing and how many times it will need to be reused. For this project,  you don’t need anything fancy.. just a simple  shallow shape round square whatever you have handy…  just make sure whatever you use if you are recycling…. that it has some flexibility to it.  You can get items out of rigid molds EVENTUALLY lol…  but if you are new to this and just want to craft and have fun… don’t do it lol.

shaker 1

For this particular project, I just happen to have some shaker windows that I won’t sell because they have some imperfections…  nothing major and nothing that will affect this project.. but still.

..So I keep those in my stash for blog projects and other craziness where tiny blemishes aren’t a big deal for me.  These are 3 inch diameter and 1/4 inch deep.  I have a few other shapes and sizes and depths.. but have’t tried them yet.  Obviously these won’t handle mass production… but I have already reused  the set I put aside for this 4 or so times… no problems at all.

testpiece

The first one I did as a tester… was just a random stamped floral pattern…   nothing spectacular.. and to be fair the PoP wasn’t even really dry  yet…. it was dry enough to stamp and color on.. but still holding a lot of moisture. As we will discover.. that does make a difference LOL

Eagle_wmd

This one … is a mixed media.. the red and blue are Crayola inks that came with the blank markers I picked up in a Crayola Marker Maker kit on Clearance at Walmart …and usually use as blender pens.

The  Eagle is colored with a fine brush and Ranger Adironack Ink.

As is this sunflower PoP round below….  this was  colored with Adironack Inks and a fine brush.

Adironack Inks and a fine brush

Adironack inks in a blender pen with a touhc of Ranger distress ink pen

Pebeo

Pebeo Porcelaine 150 glass paints. ( original version  ) Now renamed and with new colors, but available at Michaels.

And this is the results after spraying with Modge Podge Acrylic Matte sealer ( except the wax and Pebeo versions )

Conclusion…

Adironack inks fade to a much gentler color.. but still really nice results. In some cases the color change was quite remarkable..not just a fade ….but a total color change.  Most noticeable on the Hello floral and  the text on the pooch.

Pebeo glass paints retain vibrancy and is probably the most durable of all the techniques. Water based so can be watered down to make painting easier, specially if they are old like mine and a bit thick. << the paints.. not me lol.

Pencil is  harder to apply, but  gives a soft color

Stazon is great to do a cover up if you mess up the original stamping and can give a vintage Goth look with some fun color effects when mixed with  inks. Be warned, when sealed the inks will bleed into the white Stazon.. but it looked cool LOL ..and you could easily spray THEN apply the white design and  the spray a second coat.

Wax Crayon –  very  strong coverage and depth of color… but not as durable since it has no top coat.  Great if it won’t be handled much…and def a cheap fun  project for the youngsters, obviously with adult supervision since you are using heat tools.

Crayola markers... great  way to do this project on a budget,  or with kids, but make sure your base blank is fully dry and expect some soft bleeding and color absorption when sealed.

Alcohol based markers  same as with the Adironack inks.. a softer more subtle color after a day or so….sealer will brighten them up quite some… but not to the original color depth.

Now I can’t say at this point whether residual moisture in the blanks is partly to  blame for some of the color shifts etc… or whether they would still react this way if fully dried and  a few weeks old…  I guess we will find out 🙂   but all in all even the  Crayola marker one which was very “new” and had a lot of moisture… still shifted into something kinda cool.  But I am guessing that if I had waited a day or so and done it, the shift wouldn’t be quite so dramatic… and if I hadn’t of already sealed it I could have done a second coat to  make it much like the original image before it absorbed the inks.
collective

Now that is a lot of information and still doesn’t really cover everything..so please feel free to ask questions based on specific need to knows and I will do my best to answer them 🙂 But at the end of the day… the best way is to jump in and try it with whatever media you have at hand or want to try.   We all have different tastes, budgets and requirements ..sky’s the limit !!!

so .. Comment away and feel free to share your results  if and when you try this 🙂

Spotlight Series Day 4 – Carol Clarke, CUP Designer

craftsuprint_aff
Who are you ?

Carol Clarke, I’m a self employed Artist & Designer, wife, mum of 3 & grandma of 6!

Designer Showcase

Where are you ?

I live and work in a village in  Nottinghamshire.  My commute is horrendous … I roll out of bed, stagger down the stairs …. and settle down with my laptop …. absolutely awful I know …. but I mostly manage to get to work on time every day! lol

When did you first start drawing/designing seriously?

It was around 2006 when I first offered designs for sale but I had been cardmaking for a long while but couldn’t find any designs I liked so I had been drawing my own for a long while …. other cardmakers saw them and wanted to know where to buy them so around 2006 I started putting them on CDs to sell …. and it blossomed from there!!

Dressing_the_Tree

What was the first product you ever had for sale?

My earliest products were listed on eBay and those listings are long gone …. but this is the 1st item I offered for sale on Craftsuprint in 2009

“Dressing the Tree”

Favorite quote?

My Grandma said ‘Never mind the dust it will still be there when the children have grown up’  She was so right!!

What’s your guilty pleasure ?

chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate!

On_ the_Beach_Old_Man_Ken

What is your favorite piece in the whole store?

“Old Man Ken on the Beach” reminds me of my Dad who will be 90 this year and he always wore a string vest and rolled his trousers up on the beach when I was a child.

How many people work with/for you?

Me, me and only me …. unless you count my hubby who keeps me well supplied with coffee throughout the day! lol

What  job did you have BEFORE you started  drawing/designing for a living?
 I was a doctor’s receptionist and secretary

What’s your favorite color?

Pink …. and I love it even more if it’s got polka dots on it!

What was your favorite subject in school…?

I loved art but I had to give it up in the 3rd year as my parents thought needlework would be a better O Level to take.  They were right in that I not only got an A in Needlework but I went on to make my children’s clothes on an old Singer Treadle sewing machine (and knitted/crocheted all their woollies too) which saed me lots of money when they were small.   but it’s ironic that I went on to make my living from Art! I did go back to school and Art College as an Adult returner once my children were older and took 3 GCSE’s and an A level in Art …. getting A’s in all of those too!

When no one is listening…. do you sing in the shower?

Oh YES …. unfortunately for anyone who is listening!

What is your most popular item in the store/shop?

This Carousel card has been very popular with customers

3DCarousel

What’s your favorite craftroom/business supply or tool that you couldn’t live without?

My sticky tape putter onner thingy (otherwise known as an ATG!)

When you get the midnight munchies… what do you grab?

Chocolate, love the stuff …. and I’m sure midnight calories don’t count … they don’t … do they???!!

How long does the average design/art work take from concept to final product?

It varies from but My On the Shelf Cards was the longest at over a year to get from my head to fruition.  They normally start with an idea or question …. like … Is it possible?   I wonder if I can?  How can I do that?   Will this work? etc

When you are working, what is the view from your window like

Looking over the decking and the garden to the fields at the bottom of the garden and then the Derbyshire hills in the distance … we get cows trimming any plants that dare to grow too high! lol

carol_view

Who scared you most as a kid when you were being naughty.. your parents or the boogey man?

My parents!!

What’s your favorite event, or holiday of the year?

I love Christmas … I have 3 children and 6 grandchildren and it’s a magical time of year especially when viewed though the eyes of a child,

Do you plan to grow old gracefully, or disgracefully?

oOOooooo disgracefully … of course!!

Show me the drawing you think most closely resembles you physically or personality-wise

Would you go cave diving with sharks?

No No NO!!

What’s your favorite hobby when you want to relax?

I love to walk.  I am lucky to have lovely countryside on my doorstep and I walk a minimum of 2 miles every day.  I call it my green stress buster!

Which drawing/product are you the most proud of in your collection?

It has to be my Original concept On the Shelf cards I have now drawn and uploaded nearly 1900 of them …. And my favourite is always my newest one and today that is a little Irish Dancer. irish  but I also love my older ones like Santa santa  and the fun ones too

Zig Kurecolor Alcohol Markers & Giveaway

It seems to come up a lot lately in some of the cardmaking and coloring groups I am in on Facebook… lots of people are trying out the  Zig Clean Color Markers, but few know about the Zig Kurecolor set.  Since I am a huge fan of the Zig Kurecolor markers I have, I thought I would share this info for anyone who might be interested.

I had been struggling to find a skin tone  that suited my style and budget when I ran across these on the CraftingAbility website. I already had the set of Memory System Markers and loved the tips on those… so when I saw that Zig had alcohol markers with the same  fine tip, I grabbed some to try.

The brush tip on the  Zig Kurecolors isn’t like most brush tips I have tried, it’s a bit fatter, rounder and and not so stiff and I love it.  Add in the fab fine tip and … the fact I finally FINALLY found my color. SOLD !!!!

Kurecolor_fine_brush_Dual_Tip_CNKC2200_731_pale_beige_details
I am not a huge fan of pinky/orange faces… it reminds me too much of girls who can’t find the right foundation makeup.  Just personal preference, each to their own.  I picked up 3 pens to try and get a good skin combo and  the one I  absolutely can’t live without … Pale Beige #731.

kurecolor_test

Image – KennyK Stamps

Now Zig do two types of Zig Kurecolor….refillables, much like the Copic, Spectrum etc… and one that is not marketed as refillable.. but TOTALLY is and really would be another great selling point if they were marketed as such.  The pens are slimline, so won’t hold as much ink as the ones marketed as refillable.. but they are super quick and easy to fill, so I am not worried about that at all.

No replacement tips for these ones.. since they aren’t marketed as refillable, however that is not to say that the replacement tips wouldn’t work in these, I just haven’t had any to try… but you know I will  give it a shot when I do lol.  But they do come with my two favorite tips and so far, I have had no need to replace them anyway and I am not the most delicate of people when it comes to markers.

Zig seem to have very durable tips that have held up to my scribbling and Cricut Explore perfectly.  They also play nicely with other alcohol markers I have and I am definitely one to mix and match my pens.  So if you have other alcohol pens, but just can’t find the right skintones for your tastes, or feel like you are missing some colors you would like.. or you really just need different tips..check these out.

Me, as soon as I can, I’ll be  buying every single one of them lol.  I just have to decide between the dual tip refillables and these Manga pens I currently have…and really like.

425-kc1100_tips

52-kc3000

The Refillable version comes in two versions of dual tip.. the twin and twin ‘s’ .   I believe all Kurecolors come in the entire color range, but don’t quote me on that.

The Twin pens ( twin and twin’s’ ) also have replacement tips which can be purchases in packs of 10.  Please check the details on these as not all tips can be used on both pens .  I’m hoping to get my hands on some of these myself soon to try, and if and when I do… I’ll be sure to let you all know.  One of these, not sure which model yet, will be available on special order for anyone interested..( 10 days or less) I’ll let you all know as soon as they are listed, or you can sign up for their newsletter. Because I’ll be grabbing some myself to play with 🙂

308-kc_inks

and then of course there are the refills… 25ml in whatever colors  you need.  If you fall in love with the 731 like I did, I highly recommend you buy these in multiples ..lol I can tell you it’s hell when you run out and have to wait for refills.  I have 3 now and happy as a clam. I am soo not running out of that color again lol. Refills come in single color, or sets ..I believe it’s sets of 10, or 12 to correspond with the pen sets.

The color range is not as vast as Copic, but with 136 pens in the range ( 135 colors and a blender pen),  plus tip blending capabilities….there is more than enough color variety for most peoples needs …and budgets.   I just got my mits on a set of the Hair and muted tones manga pens… so  expect to see projects  and a review of those soon too.

I think I read somewhere that these inks are also suitable for paint guns.. so I’ll be giving that a shot too. I know my other alcohol inks worked in it.
