Bugaboo Zen Meets Psycho-delic-ious

Don’t look at me like you never did it  before… We’ve all walked in and seen paper we just know we are never gonna use on a project.. but bought it anyway because it’s so darn fun. SO dammit..I’m gonna have some fun with my background on this one lol.  I’m not sure why I liked this so much..I am not usually a glittery  over abundantly colorful kind a gal really. Maybe it appeals to my  my nerdy galactic  side??  Sure I was a 70’s kid.. but trust me, I am not ….and never was enamored with the fashion of the era.

anywho…. It seemed to fit the card perfectly….at least in my warped mind haha.

Ok.. so keeping it simple.. this is the Flower Doodles 2 stamp from Bugaboo stamps and this was the mystery image I added in as a  challenge to the DT girls.  It has a Zentangle, mandala type feel to it… so perfect for all the adults coloring book fiends out there.  No .. not a typo…. some of YOU have friends…. some of us have fiends! Fun ones, loyal ones, lovable and cute ones.. but fiends all the same 🙂  This is just one of a bunch of fun coloring book style images at Bugaboo Stamps

ok so this was colored with..  an H2o ink wash using my Zig H2o fine brush, which I LOVE… and then Chameleon Pens. The dotted stitch die on the image is a Gina Marie Dot Stud.. SURPRISE !!! lol   and  the mini heart lace frame on the lower layer is also a Gina Marie Designs Die.  The card base is cut from a super lime slime green 65lb card from one of the Value Recollections packs at Michaels.  Zig Photo tape was used to assemble the card.   No sentiment… It’s more of a casual note card type than occasion card… but of course any sentiment can be added as needed.

KennyK and my ‘AHA moment’

Now I know there are a few of you who  already started humming  “Take on me”  ….even if only in your head.  Admit it, you know the song and  you secretly wished some hot guy would drag you off  into the pages of a  magazine.. or hot steamy romance book.

* whistles innocently.

Or if you are one of  our male crafters.. maybe you want to be him instead and drag some cute chick off to woo with your sketchings. but that just sounds like the weird dude at the park… so … let’s not go there lol.

Well…  here we are 30 years later.. and we’re not watching those sketchy scenes anymore. Most of us are either drawing them, or coloring them.  I have to say, Morton Harket still looks pretty damned hot… I saw some recent pics and he scrubs up pretty good LOL.

Anywho, I digress… back to the project

and what a project this one was! as you can probably tell it’s inspired by…. AHA …. yup I had my AHA moment.   Now  this one was a doozy;  it was quite a process just to get to this stage and I have a feeling by the time I finish matting and framing this guy, there is gonna be a second white mat  with some comic strip style layout  surrounding him and his black mat board.  I guess we shall see…. one day.

I’ll show  more details below.. but the quick run through on this one…

Canson Mixed Media Paper, colored with Chameleons, over color with Crayola Color Escapes Pencils… scanned, reprinted, background depth using a  black Zig Scroll & Brush pen.. additional shading and outline definition  done with a charcoal gray Color Escapes… signed .. matted.. BINGO

I find it useful to take progress pics as I work, so I can sit back and look at them  on my comp as I drink my tea and take a break.  For some reason it really helps me look at it with a more critical eye  and helps me spot areas I may need to work on, better than looking at the actual project.  It also gives me a more accurate view of projects that are meant to be viewed at a distance…. like  framed art etc.  When I get up and walk off to do something…. I find propping up my work and leaving it in full view  for a few hours, or days helps when I feel I am just not quite seeing the problem…. but I know it’s just not quite right.

I have a tendency to ruin  projects by not knowing when to stop “trying” *sigh…. so I try and give myself breaks at strategic points, to  avoid that happening so often.

What I really love about this particular project, is that the various stages of progression gave me some ideas  on other  things I wanted to try with this concept.  One of them being a version with only the skin colored in markers and pencil and the rest black and white/graycale.  I think that one will look really cool.

Anyway enough of my ramblings, let’s face it…..I just like to goof around and try things. Some work, some don’t….sometimes they all work for you… for different reasons and you have to decide which one to go with first. The only thing that matters is having fun and trying new things and NOT trying to compete with other crafters and constantly comparing your work to others. when it  comes to art and creativity…. the rule is

…. THERE ARE NO RULES !!

….so here are the progress snapshots and the final  project  matted and ready to frame…or maybe double matted THEN framed later lol…and some product links for anyone interested.

I printed light by adjusting the layer opacity in my graphics program on Canson Mix Media paper and then colored with Chameleon skin tone marker NU00.  I know I know.. one shouldn’t color with markers on papers designed for  other media…. but I have refills …and I can, because I want to …. I am such a rebel !!!   LOL remember THERE ARE NO RULES!!

I would be lying if I said I recall exactly what colors I used at this stage.  I know the blue for the pants was BL4 Cornflower Blue.. but I used a mix of grays  for the hat, leather straps and chaps.  One of which I am pretty sure was  the CG8  Cool Gray from the original 22 pen set  and the others  came from the gray tones  5 pack.  Background was sketched in with pencil.

I tried detailing the outline with a fab new pen I got just before Christmas, it’s called a Bimoji Marker and this is the fine tip one… and I really like the look of it on  the test piece on the right.  Comp crashed and I got a print fail… so decided to use it as a test sheet.  but it wasn’t quite gellin with what I had in my head for this particular piece.  But this is definitely something I am going to  use on another project, I love this sketchy look with impact.

In the end I compromised and did the detailing and outlines with a charcoal gray pencil. because I printed this as a soft print with light lines, It  needed to be brought out in the coloring instead.  This is the first time I have really tried the no outlines /soft outlines style… and I actually like it… for SOME projects.  I think it really depends on the individual project and images as to whether pen, or pencil works best.

One last quick note… since I obscured the background with this sketchy AHA inspired  look, don’t forget to add your artists signature back in somewhere on your piece.  Mine is tucked up under the mat, but will also be added to the back on a label with details.  Since this piece may well end up as an Abandoned Art Project at some point, I want to make sure credit is assigned to  the artist… the one and only KennyK.

………. and so, here he is “Tex” by KennyK

This is one of my mystery DT projects from the January 2017 Crafty Awesomeness Challenge which you are more than welcome to come enter.

Crayola Color Escapes 72 count Pencil set ..SCORE !!

Well….I did it, I ordered a set…. well actually …….I ordered TWO sets  lol
crayola1

I spotted these a few months ago and shared the info on here and Facebook… but at the time, I didn’t have spare funds to try these out.  Well I decided I was going to jump in and grab a set and since they were priced lower than I remembered and they offer free shipping on orders over $30… I grabbed a second set.  Oh and Thank You Crayola for the 10% discount you emailed me while I  was  filling my cart lol.

I am not a brand snob…. I currently color with CraZart pencils, which cost a whopping $8 or so at Walmart..AND I LOVE THEM.  So I guess a set of “Grown up “Crayolas is a step up and progress.  Who am I kidding, I will still color with my CraZart pencils…. I love them lol.  I am the queen of Mix and Match Media, these will play very nicely together I am sure LOL

But I now have another 72 pencils to add to my coloring  repertoire. It will be interesting to see how these  handle the specialty papers I like to use with the CraZart pencils, like the velvet paper.

So if you are just starting out with adult coloring, or crafting, have older kids who love to color and wanted something a little more “classy” looking than the regular ..need a crafty gift. Maybe you just wanted to try something new, but without the hefty price tag of some of the “artist” brands of pencils * rolleyes

Check these out… they are, or were as far as I am aware only available at Crayola.com or Amazon.com and to be entirely honest, I was half expecting Amazon to be the better deal…. WRONG. …  not this time. When ordering 2 sets,  and by some hocus pocus and trickery….of which I am still not entirely sure lol….  I managed to get both sets for a grand total of…..

Hahaha.. nope not gonna tell you, go check it out for yourself….but it’s a great deal.   Add 2 sets to your cart and if you get the same deal I did.. with free shipping and the 10% discount code they emailed to me..and the “?? where the heck did that come from discount”  I paid less than $35  including taxes and shipping for two sets  🙂

…and the regular price is $22.49 per set + taxes + $6.49 in shipping on orders less than $30.. still a fab price.

Free Shipping with $50+ Crayola order

Super excited to get my hands on these and have a play….:)  I have been wanting a set for months and every time I have some spare money, they were out of stock… but not anymore !!!  WOOT

For those of you who prefer Amazon because you get special  bonus points etc.  Here is a link to the Amazon Deal which is  probably a better option when you are only buying one set and have Prime and/ or an Amazon Points card. The Crayola deal with Free Shipping and no taxes is also available through this link.

Attack the Scrap Bucket ! fun project for kids and grown ups

We’ve all seen those fun Magnetic word sets that you use on your fridge, or freezer .. here’s a way to make your own. Great project for crafty homeschoolers, teachers, business signs or people who need something a little bit different from the usual word sets.
alphamgnets
I was lucky enough to have some tails from Cohas (formerly ZiggBoard) Magnetic Sheets that I could cut into strips to make these letters and words.  You may have seen previous post where I started making letters and numbers for the lil man .. now we are progressing onto words and  so I got out my MFT Bottlecap letters die and off we went again.  I won’t lie… it’s a time consuming project… we all know it takes a lot  LOT of letters  to make up enough single letters to form a decent amount of words.ziggy_alpha3 I probably cut and assembled at least 10 sets of individual letters.. probably more  and I already cut out at least 8 sets to start forming word magnets. There are going to be a lot of letters you use A LOT and some you don’t use so much.. just store those for later.  As your kids vocabulary grows, you will be able to use those up to expand your set.  Anyone who is homeschooling already knows that it’s time consuming, but VERY rewarding and totally worth the time and money spent.

These dies are totally worth grabbing because you can use them for so many projects, both fun and educational for years to come.

Name tags, labels, cards, magnets, stickers …so many fun things.

Ok so what did I use?… pretty simple project.. as I said.. just time consuming

  • Cohas Magnetic sheet cut into strips
  • 110lb Card from my scrap box…I have a tonne of this from my Cricut Print & cut projects.  Now they are expanding the Print & Cut dimensions to fit almost a full 8.5×11 this will reduce my scraps… but even so..right now I have enough to make alphabet sets for half the neighborhood lol.
  • Mod Podge I use this to cover the strip first and attach the letters then add a coat on top to seal them in.
  • My Favorite Things Bottlecap Alphabet Dies
  • paint brush to apply the Mod Podge
  • TIME.. and Patience.. even if you just do a few strips at a time… it adds up to a decent set  fairly quickly

Of course if you are a good crafter who doesn’t have a pile of scraps lying around waiting for that “maybe one day project”.. you can always print your letters on printable Vinyl or adhesive label sheets and just cut it into strips. Less time consuming but I am determined to attack my scrap bucket  before this year is done!!! lol  Plus it is kind of fun letting him add a couple of strips at a time to the freezer, so he isn’t overwhelmed with a tonne of new words.

On a totally off topic random  thought.. just because we are on a sort of educational thing anyway.  We were in Toys R Us today and a lady was there, obviously overwhelmed by all the toys… she asked him how old he was. And I could tell she was hoping he was around the same age as someone she was shopping for.  Turns out she has a young relative flying in for Christmas and was struggling to find a  suitable gift.  She had a set of Power Ranger figures in her hand and asked him if he thought they were cool.  All she knew was the kid liked Super hero’s.

Well hot damned if my little guy didn’t jump in like the Bloody Toy Ambassador for Toys R US.. and dragged that poor lady all over the store showing her everything he wanted for Christmas lol… with a toy review and running commentary all the way. We started with Five Nights At Freddy, hit the Educational aisle where he proceeded to tell her how great the squishy Body  kit was..and reeled off  all the body parts shown on the back of the box, dragged her off to see Grossery Gang and the yuck truck on another aisle… then onto Imaginext vehicles and buildings… followed by transformers and finishing up with Octonauts.

Poor lady haha.. he talked her ear off for a solid half hour I think while dragging her round the store haha.  She was  in awe of his knowledge… specially when he started naming all the body parts…  and yes  he is getting that for Christmas, he just doesn’t know it yet LOL. ‘His Big’ sister in Australia is getting him that. It will be a fun start to his homeschooling science learning.

So proud of my lil man… that is the second time this month he has helped someone out in toys R US who was having probs picking gifts.

and back on track again…

Now I know decent Magnetic sheet is not always easy to come by, but I have used this magnetic sheet for all sorts of fun projects myself … from picture magnets,  to Metal Die storage.   If anyone is interested in what I would call it a crafters grab bag those will be available early next year.  These will most likely be pre-cut ready to go pieces in various shapes and sizes.

Need something other than alphabets, numbers and words?  want to make picture blocks, fun gifts, organization tags….or just have some fun and attach fun crafty items to cards etc … or decorate your locker.  This magnetic sheet is awesome,  everyone should have a bag of this in their stash.

Here are a few  of the other items I have made in the past.. search for magnet on the blog or have a wander through the projects tab at the top of the page for details on those projects.  and expect to see more of these projects next year.. I have some ideas I am dabbling with.

Confessions of a Chameleon Pen owner

confession time…

As a lot of you already know, I love my Chameleon Pens, but I haven’t really ever taken the time to really get to grips with the whole blending chamber thing… I use other methods to achieve the results I want.  BUT… earlier this week I found myself sat in an apt with no computer, no internet and no tv.. NADA Just a crate, a magnifier light some pre-printed images and my pens… and my desk top easel balanced on my knees.

…and very spotty 4G service on my phone.

Sooo.. guess who went through all of her pens testing them out and playing with blends.. <<< THIS GAL. Well let me just say it had it’s pros and cons…

Pros..it’s actually pretty dang cool… It’s really not rocket science and with a bit of patience and practice… it’s pretty quick and easy to get results.  The blending function  actually promotes a more relaxed style of coloring as you have to be patient and  not rush into it willy nilly scribbling away like a mad thing lol…even a 5 second blend..it’s just that subtle pause in the mania of things.  It gives you time to actually look at the images you are coloring  and take time to see where the shadows  and  highlights should be and just take it easy and chill.  I kinda needed that after the last few crazy months.  I think I’d kind of lost the enjoyment in coloring lately  as it was all about “having to get it done”  instead of just doing it for the pure enjoyment.

Cons.. I waited a year to find that out and some of my original set pen chambers were dry…and my clear blender refill was at the other apt. ( some of you know I am in the process of moving )

But I did have two of the newer 5 pen packs too so I did get to play. Considering my lack of desk, or proper seating and the fact it’s my first REAL time actually doing this… I am impressed.

Now I really want to get my hands on the full set… AND a lot of refills for my clear blender. As soon as I got home, I cleaned out the new bottle I had refilling all the dry chambers I could… so now I need to get more to finish up my set.

Just goes to show that sometimes you really should try, try, and try again…. and not just give up when it doesn’t quite work out the first time.

This was my tester piece

I did this one with the new gray tones pack I won … it’s a Power Poppy digital stamp.  I shall be playing with this a lot more now and incorporating it into my usual style. Excited to see how well the techniques compliment each other on a single piece.

I don’t feel so bad about tackling that gorgeous coloring book that came with these pens in my prize now.  WHEN I have time.

It’s no BIG secret, if you are a regular….

on my blog.. that I am a Chameleon Pens and Zig Kurecolor gal….  I love these pens equally for different reasons and come hell or high water... not too high…. I can’t swim… but high enough lol.  I SHALL own the complete range of both of these amazing pen sets, slowly but surely my collection is growing and I got another boost to my collection in today’s mail.

YAY >>>HAPPY MAIL.

Today I got my prize from the World Card Making Day Card Contest over on the Chameleon site. I missed out on the expansion set, but the judge was so kind to all of us and picked some runner’s up….and I was one of the lucky ones to get a runner up pack with this project featuring a Power Poppy image.  There were a lot of fabulous entries and I would have envied the judge on that one… that must have been a tough call.  If you missed all the fun, you can still see all of the entries over here at the Chameleon Pinterest board.

anywho…. PRIZES !!!!  I am not going to do a big ol’ review right now, but I wanted to show off my prize. Not because I am boasting that my card got picked…. but because I was shocked and very pleasantly so, to see just how good the coloring book REALLY is. Now coloring books are not really my thing.. but I have to say, of all the coloring books I have physically laid eyes on THIS ONE.. totally in a class of it’s own.  This book is like  HELLOOO. spiral bound hard cover, color samples, divider pages to prevent bleed through… gorgeous quality.
chameleon_prize
If you like coloring books; I highly recommend you check  this out, I luckily caught the video of Julia BenBen showcasing these on her recent spot on the shopping channel.  I watched this video, saw the coloring book before I even knew I had won one….and I STILL wasn’t expecting this quality. All I can say is….if I was gonna buy a coloring book…. this would be it.  My 4 year old saw me open the box and immediately asked to color..and I’m like Nooooo these are mommy’s special pens…  he is so used to me letting him share my print outs to color together he must have been thinking  “WTH mom!!!”

It’s so cool I don’t even know if i can bring myself to color it… let alone let my 4 year old loose on it LOL

and of course.. the pens… can’t forget the pens. I chose the gray tones  because my style of coloring  utilizes gray tones for shading and color depth…and I have a whole bunch of dark grays, but I am lacking in the light grays.   So now I have 2 of the 6 new color palettes, I will  by hook, or by crook …. get the remaining 20 colors LOL.  I love my skintone set and now this gray set will be a fab addition to my color palette.

Be sure to swing by the Chameleon Pens Facebook Page and the Blog for even more fab project ideas.

and of course…stay tuned for a more in depth look through this fab book…  I’m in the middle of packing to move so crafty things have taken a back seat to packing up my sons version of his own Toys R US store… aka his  room lol.  Hopefully we’ll be moved and settled in and back on track by Mid-Late November.  For now enjoy the peace and tranquility of me not blowing up your mailbox/Notifications every day LOL.. well except for tonight… I have a bunch I need to get out tonight… then it’s back to packing.

Well maybe I can flip a few new pen lids off just to have a quick peek test lol…. they have been sat her for over  8 hours now and I have resisted the temptation.. but it ain’t easy LOL
