Playing with somethings new.. Mix Media, Resins, Silicon Molds and Woodburning

Some of you already know from the Facebook etc. that I have been playing around with  some new craft projects lately. Some of these are things I haven’t done in years… and really wanted to  get back into and share  with my son.  He is a little too young right now to be doing these crafts himself, but I see the look in his eye when he is “helping” mommy and I can tell he is itching to be able to do some himself.

I try and  make sure that a lot of my projects are things he can participate in…  even  at this age because as some of you know, I plan to homeschool him and creativity is a huge part of learning in this house.

So what have we been up to…. lots of experimenting…. as always haha.  Let’s just say  this mommy really should learn to wear latex gloves .. job hunting when your fingers look like Darth Maul… probably not the best idea haha.  I just get engrossed in what I am doing and I am not the most diligently prepared crafter haha..I like to spend my time being creative, not getting ready to create… but at least  have stopped crafting in my good clothes… there is hope for me yet!!!

One of the things we like to do is incorporate lots of different media, techniques and ideas into one project… boy do we !! lol  so lately we have been playing with resins, and woodburning.

We’ll be using these various project ideas and techniques throughout the coming year.. so be sure to subscribe if this is something you have wanted to try, or if you are a mix media artist who loves to decorate boxes, create unique artwork and wall hangings… this is going to be a lot of fun.

I picked up a woodburning iron last year and haven’t had as much time as I would have liked…. till now to actually play with it and get in some practice.  Now I get asked all the time, did you freehand that… NO… I cold only wish I was that artistic.  So I know there are others out there who would love to be able to do  projects like this, but feel  that they don’t have the artistic skills needed.. WRONG …. you just need to think outside of the box … a really nice wooden box…or blank, or frame… or anything else you fancy having a go at.

I was going to hold off on this post for a while till I had some full step by step projects to share….. but when I ran across this company Rockler Woodworking and Hardware doing a Google search for Branding Iron alphabets… I had to…. not only sign up for their  affiliate program, but I also found they do have a store near us and do classes and demo’s.. so you just know I am going to have to go check that out.

Now this company is mostly aimed at Woodcrafters.. which makes me drool since I no longer have any of the tools I used to have back in the UK… * sigh… BUT.. they also have a lot of cool products that are perfect for crafters  like me…and that is why I am sharing this with you all.

They carry a range  of Woodburning kits, including the alphabet irons I was looking for…. woot !!  these alphabet  sets thread into the iron just the same as regular tips.

They also have this gorgeous range of wood dyes that look perfect for an upcoming project next year.  You may have seen the burnt and inked blanks already… I am dying to try these out for that technique. I have a few wooden boxes  waiting to be  played with that would be perfect for this.

So stay tuned for some fun and projects and tutorials  early next year… maybe even a  video or two or 100 lol

Attack the Scrap Bucket ! fun project for kids and grown ups

We’ve all seen those fun Magnetic word sets that you use on your fridge, or freezer .. here’s a way to make your own. Great project for crafty homeschoolers, teachers, business signs or people who need something a little bit different from the usual word sets.

I was lucky enough to have some tails from Cohas (formerly ZiggBoard) Magnetic Sheets that I could cut into strips to make these letters and words.  You may have seen previous post where I started making letters and numbers for the lil man .. now we are progressing onto words and  so I got out my MFT Bottlecap letters die and off we went again.  I won’t lie… it’s a time consuming project… we all know it takes a lot  LOT of letters  to make up enough single letters to form a decent amount of words.ziggy_alpha3 I probably cut and assembled at least 10 sets of individual letters.. probably more  and I already cut out at least 8 sets to start forming word magnets. There are going to be a lot of letters you use A LOT and some you don’t use so much.. just store those for later.  As your kids vocabulary grows, you will be able to use those up to expand your set.  Anyone who is homeschooling already knows that it’s time consuming, but VERY rewarding and totally worth the time and money spent.

These dies are totally worth grabbing because you can use them for so many projects, both fun and educational for years to come.

Name tags, labels, cards, magnets, stickers …so many fun things.

Ok so what did I use?… pretty simple project.. as I said.. just time consuming

  • Cohas Magnetic sheet cut into strips
  • 110lb Card from my scrap box…I have a tonne of this from my Cricut Print & cut projects.  Now they are expanding the Print & Cut dimensions to fit almost a full 8.5×11 this will reduce my scraps… but even so..right now I have enough to make alphabet sets for half the neighborhood lol.
  • Mod Podge I use this to cover the strip first and attach the letters then add a coat on top to seal them in.
  • My Favorite Things Bottlecap Alphabet Dies
  • paint brush to apply the Mod Podge
  • TIME.. and Patience.. even if you just do a few strips at a time… it adds up to a decent set  fairly quickly

Of course if you are a good crafter who doesn’t have a pile of scraps lying around waiting for that “maybe one day project”.. you can always print your letters on printable Vinyl or adhesive label sheets and just cut it into strips. Less time consuming but I am determined to attack my scrap bucket  before this year is done!!! lol  Plus it is kind of fun letting him add a couple of strips at a time to the freezer, so he isn’t overwhelmed with a tonne of new words.

On a totally off topic random  thought.. just because we are on a sort of educational thing anyway.  We were in Toys R Us today and a lady was there, obviously overwhelmed by all the toys… she asked him how old he was. And I could tell she was hoping he was around the same age as someone she was shopping for.  Turns out she has a young relative flying in for Christmas and was struggling to find a  suitable gift.  She had a set of Power Ranger figures in her hand and asked him if he thought they were cool.  All she knew was the kid liked Super hero’s.

Well hot damned if my little guy didn’t jump in like the Bloody Toy Ambassador for Toys R US.. and dragged that poor lady all over the store showing her everything he wanted for Christmas lol… with a toy review and running commentary all the way. We started with Five Nights At Freddy, hit the Educational aisle where he proceeded to tell her how great the squishy Body  kit was..and reeled off  all the body parts shown on the back of the box, dragged her off to see Grossery Gang and the yuck truck on another aisle… then onto Imaginext vehicles and buildings… followed by transformers and finishing up with Octonauts.

Poor lady haha.. he talked her ear off for a solid half hour I think while dragging her round the store haha.  She was  in awe of his knowledge… specially when he started naming all the body parts…  and yes  he is getting that for Christmas, he just doesn’t know it yet LOL. ‘His Big’ sister in Australia is getting him that. It will be a fun start to his homeschooling science learning.

So proud of my lil man… that is the second time this month he has helped someone out in toys R US who was having probs picking gifts.

and back on track again…

Now I know decent Magnetic sheet is not always easy to come by, but I have used this magnetic sheet for all sorts of fun projects myself … from picture magnets,  to Metal Die storage.   If anyone is interested in what I would call it a crafters grab bag those will be available early next year.  These will most likely be pre-cut ready to go pieces in various shapes and sizes.

Need something other than alphabets, numbers and words?  want to make picture blocks, fun gifts, organization tags….or just have some fun and attach fun crafty items to cards etc … or decorate your locker.  This magnetic sheet is awesome,  everyone should have a bag of this in their stash.

Here are a few  of the other items I have made in the past.. search for magnet on the blog or have a wander through the projects tab at the top of the page for details on those projects.  and expect to see more of these projects next year.. I have some ideas I am dabbling with.

Oversized East Wind Humorous Birthday Card…

I went trolling through Etsy’s Digi Artists the other night in search of something “new” and different.  I needed to get back to my roots a bit and stray off the “cutesie” path for a bit. AND….I came across a couple of Artists, one of which I had heard of, but never colored…..and one I hadn’t heard of. Both of which had Images that instantly appealed to me, so I grabbed one from each to see if they worked with my grungier style… Here is the East Wind image “Aurora Warrior”.

What can I say… I am a bit of a tomboy and have always loved the “tank girl” tom boy thing.  You don’t have to be a Barbie, to be Sexah!
ew_oldage_wmded
This is an oversized card… I love making these 6 x12 inch cards..so much room to play and perfect for those  employee Birthdays where half the office have to sign it.  Anywho, there she is in all her glory.

I colored  the image with Chameleon Pens, Zig Kurecolor, Ranger Distress Pens and a touch of Marvy Detailer…. on a sheet of Canson Mix Media.

She is bordered with a dual stitched rectangular frame by Lil’Inkers on Recollections black card and the image was partially fussy cut to bring elements up and over the frame.  The main image lays behind the frame.  I love doing these up and overs..<< None technical term.  I must do a quick tutorial showing how I do them one day.

The green striped paper is one I made in PSP and printed out on a white 110lb card stock and added a thin black frame for contrast.

The sentiment is one straight from my own warped mind and inspired by the image. As regular visitors know, I like to have fun with my cards. The letters are cut on 110lb white card using a Bottle Cap Alphabet Die by MFT ( My Favorite Things) on my Sizzix Bigshot.

..AND NOW….

I want to give a big shout out to fellow card maker and blogger Shannon Abblitt  who has constantly amazed and inspired me with her fabulous cards… and who exposed me to so many Cool East Wind images, that I just had to give them a try.  Thanks Shannon 🙂

Fridge Magnet Game with ZiggyBoard Scraps

I needed a break from the all this Spotlight Series and card making for an hour or two, so I decided to play with some of my ZiggyBoard Magnetic Sheet scraps and the new die set a friend sent me last month.

I’d been eyeing up a letter set so that was perfect timing and I can’t thank you enough for that fab gift package you sent. The glue you sent with it is fabulous for this project too 🙂 Lil man and I are so lucky 🙂

Just wanted to share a project I am doing with this 🙂

I took my ZiggyBoard Magnetic sheet and cut it on my Fellowes trimmer, this cuts like a dream on paper trimmers, cutting machines like my Cricut Explore.. but it also die cuts easy in the Sizzix Big Shot and of course…. as you can see….with Scissors. So many fun things you can do with Ziggyboard… My fridge has all sorts of fun stuff on it now 🙂

But this is something I had wanted to do for a while .. so here’s a quick look at it.  I had a bunch of spare letters left over after doing my “oversized” Christmas Card  which I posted yesterday as my DT card for the new Crafty Awesomeness Prize Challenge…   and this was a perfect way to use up some of the excess letters.  I shall just keep cutting more and stashing them away when I have scraps to use up.

ziggy_alpha1

ziggy_alpha2ziggy_alpha3Voila.. fridge game for me and my son.  We can learn letters and words and leave messages for daddy… or he can leave messages for us.  What a fun way to use up scraps  🙂
