Easy Chalkboard Vinyl humorous signs

I needed a break from cleaning up and had a play with some fun signs.. nothing major, just some fun signs with some fun images. I popped a square piece of Cohas Adhesive Chalkboard Vinyl onto an 8×8 wood canvas/blank and added some of the fun images I got from CraftsUPrint designer Gordon Fraser.  These were watercolored using Gansai Tambi paints  and H2o brushes on Canson Mix Media Paper.

It’s really easy to  swap images in and out…. if you don’t want to keep a permanent image on it, just use a 2 way temporary bond glue.  Great way to make motivational signs for yourself, or other family members.  I just  wrote on mine with blue and white Zig wet wipe Chalk Markers, which cleans right off with a wet rag. You could of course use a more permanent pen which they also  make, that comes off with window cleaner.  I deliberately didn’t prime my chalk pens, to keep it more  rustic and not so intense.

This vinyl comes in 12×12 sheets, or pre-cut labels in various shapes.  I like the 12×12 sheets  because I can cut this on my Cricut Explore if I want something a bit fancy and also write on it on my Cricut.. because let’s face it, my handwriting sucks haha…. or pop it in a 12×12 Scrapbook page frame if I want something bigger.  I have the labels too and they are awesome for  labeling jars etc with my lil man as gifts.. lots of fun shapes.

When I want a more permanent sign, I confess I usually  run it through my Cricut first to add the text..

KennyK and my ‘AHA moment’

Now I know there are a few of you who  already started humming  “Take on me”  ….even if only in your head.  Admit it, you know the song and  you secretly wished some hot guy would drag you off  into the pages of a  magazine.. or hot steamy romance book.

* whistles innocently.

Or if you are one of  our male crafters.. maybe you want to be him instead and drag some cute chick off to woo with your sketchings. but that just sounds like the weird dude at the park… so … let’s not go there lol.

Well…  here we are 30 years later.. and we’re not watching those sketchy scenes anymore. Most of us are either drawing them, or coloring them.  I have to say, Morton Harket still looks pretty damned hot… I saw some recent pics and he scrubs up pretty good LOL.

Anywho, I digress… back to the project

and what a project this one was! as you can probably tell it’s inspired by…. AHA …. yup I had my AHA moment.   Now  this one was a doozy;  it was quite a process just to get to this stage and I have a feeling by the time I finish matting and framing this guy, there is gonna be a second white mat  with some comic strip style layout  surrounding him and his black mat board.  I guess we shall see…. one day.

I’ll show  more details below.. but the quick run through on this one…

Canson Mixed Media Paper, colored with Chameleons, over color with Crayola Color Escapes Pencils… scanned, reprinted, background depth using a  black Zig Scroll & Brush pen.. additional shading and outline definition  done with a charcoal gray Color Escapes… signed .. matted.. BINGO

I find it useful to take progress pics as I work, so I can sit back and look at them  on my comp as I drink my tea and take a break.  For some reason it really helps me look at it with a more critical eye  and helps me spot areas I may need to work on, better than looking at the actual project.  It also gives me a more accurate view of projects that are meant to be viewed at a distance…. like  framed art etc.  When I get up and walk off to do something…. I find propping up my work and leaving it in full view  for a few hours, or days helps when I feel I am just not quite seeing the problem…. but I know it’s just not quite right.

I have a tendency to ruin  projects by not knowing when to stop “trying” *sigh…. so I try and give myself breaks at strategic points, to  avoid that happening so often.

What I really love about this particular project, is that the various stages of progression gave me some ideas  on other  things I wanted to try with this concept.  One of them being a version with only the skin colored in markers and pencil and the rest black and white/graycale.  I think that one will look really cool.

Anyway enough of my ramblings, let’s face it…..I just like to goof around and try things. Some work, some don’t….sometimes they all work for you… for different reasons and you have to decide which one to go with first. The only thing that matters is having fun and trying new things and NOT trying to compete with other crafters and constantly comparing your work to others. when it  comes to art and creativity…. the rule is

…. THERE ARE NO RULES !!

….so here are the progress snapshots and the final  project  matted and ready to frame…or maybe double matted THEN framed later lol…and some product links for anyone interested.

I printed light by adjusting the layer opacity in my graphics program on Canson Mix Media paper and then colored with Chameleon skin tone marker NU00.  I know I know.. one shouldn’t color with markers on papers designed for  other media…. but I have refills …and I can, because I want to …. I am such a rebel !!!   LOL remember THERE ARE NO RULES!!

I would be lying if I said I recall exactly what colors I used at this stage.  I know the blue for the pants was BL4 Cornflower Blue.. but I used a mix of grays  for the hat, leather straps and chaps.  One of which I am pretty sure was  the CG8  Cool Gray from the original 22 pen set  and the others  came from the gray tones  5 pack.  Background was sketched in with pencil.

I tried detailing the outline with a fab new pen I got just before Christmas, it’s called a Bimoji Marker and this is the fine tip one… and I really like the look of it on  the test piece on the right.  Comp crashed and I got a print fail… so decided to use it as a test sheet.  but it wasn’t quite gellin with what I had in my head for this particular piece.  But this is definitely something I am going to  use on another project, I love this sketchy look with impact.

In the end I compromised and did the detailing and outlines with a charcoal gray pencil. because I printed this as a soft print with light lines, It  needed to be brought out in the coloring instead.  This is the first time I have really tried the no outlines /soft outlines style… and I actually like it… for SOME projects.  I think it really depends on the individual project and images as to whether pen, or pencil works best.

One last quick note… since I obscured the background with this sketchy AHA inspired  look, don’t forget to add your artists signature back in somewhere on your piece.  Mine is tucked up under the mat, but will also be added to the back on a label with details.  Since this piece may well end up as an Abandoned Art Project at some point, I want to make sure credit is assigned to  the artist… the one and only KennyK.

………. and so, here he is “Tex” by KennyK

Humorous Christmas Card ..getting ready for 2017

This is a Bugaboo Stamps Friday Freebie, if you didn’t grab it..you still have a few days left to get it before the new Freebie comes out.  It’s called “Winter Penguin Trio”  I am still playing with Christmas images… nothing like getting a head start on next 2017 cards lol.

I knocked up a super quick and simple card. It’s just a single fold on an 8.5×11 sheet of Black card, the image was printed on Canson mixed Media and colored with Chameleon pens. I added the inside sentiment to the bottom of the photo, just so you get the intended humor.  The image is foam popped on a sheet of Darice foam and the sentiment is a die cut from a Momenta die I picked up on clearance at Hobby Lobby last week.  I cut it on black card then rewrote the sentiment with a Zig Chalk Pen.  Tore up the edges and sponged on a blue ink edging.bug_penguin_trio

Supplies:

Recollections 65lb card -Black
Canson Mixed Media Paper 7×10
Chameleon Pens
Zig Chalk Marker Dual tip – white
Momenta “Believe” die – Hobby Lobby clearance
Craftsmart Dye Ink Pad  –  Light Blue
Darice Adhesive foam sheet
Zig Photo Tape

Finally..I completed my set of Chameleon Pens ..WOO HOO

I managed to pick up the last 10 of my missing colors just before Christmas and so I have been pushing myself to practice using these pens…. the way they were intended to be used lol.

I confessed previously, that I really haven’t used the blending chambers as much as I probably should have in the year I have had them..so now, I am determined to do  more with that side of their functionality.

The last two packs I needed were floral and warm tones;  so I picked out two of my new Power Poppy images  that I haven’t colored yet, printed them on Canson Mixed Media paper and had a play.  I am quite pleased with these…. they have a soft, almost vintage botanical catalog/book feel to them. I avoided the overly bright modern and strong look I usually favor & kept these two muted.  These were colored with a  mix of pens from the whole set, NOT just the two latest color packs.

I did pop in a shadow  outline effect using my H2o detailer brush and the printer ink from the image.

Comb Bound Notepad with die cut floral cover

I was playing with one of my new CUP (CraftsUPrint) cut files I picked up with my Crafty Bob Crazy 5 minute Game winnings and decided to make another notepad.  This one will join my growing Abandoned Art project bucket.  I love the contrasting colors on this one, it’s very cheery and reminds me of Texas blue skies and the beautiful wild Sunflowers that are blooming all around us.

The covers are Recollections card stock, as are the two layers of cut out design. It has approx. 40 pages and is bound with a plastic comb binding.

The design is Floral Background Stencil with Mats and is available in various cutting machine formats.  Such a fun cheery cut design and suitable for all sorts of projects, lantern panels, card backgrounds,  decorative boxes.. so many options.

Spotlight mystery box contents revealed.

Well now our winner has her prize and has had a chance to  go through it all and  check it out, I can reveal the contents.  Our lucky winner was Tee Hall  from The Altered Paper, you can check out her post about her prize here.

Now those of you that were following the spotlight  know that I had requested a few specific items  to be included and that the box was the prize for the Amy Chomas Spotlight.  I matched the spotlight and prize sponsor for a reason, the Amy Chomas Adapters mean… you can use these pens on your Cricut Explore etc …and  one of these items I absolutely LOVE using on my Cricut.

ok so… let’s have a quick look see what Tee had in her box…

and now for the fun part… I have most.. but not all of these products myself.  For those of you who missed out on previous posts, I am going to add in  some links to some past posts. If you want to see more of the  product from Craftingability.com (ImageAbility) and projects made with them ..just do a search on the blog for “Zig” or “craftingability”.

This is where I get those Zig Kurecolor markers I love so much, you may have seen I recently had a giveaway for the skintone pack  and where I will be getting a set of Zig Clean Colors from soon I hope 🙂  It’s also where I bought my Gansai Tambi watercolors & Wink of Stella/Luna pens.

..and then we have  the slate…. I LOVE this slate, but let’s face it.. my handwriting sucks and you can’t run this through the Cricut even with a fab adapter lol.  But there are so many ways to use this slate, it’s gorgeous…. you just have to think outside the box.   Stencils, transfer paper, stamping …or you can be like me and go totally in the other direction.  I love to do 3D decoupage layered images….  so my first project with this slate was this one.

New Hampshire Slate & 3D layered image wall plaque

And then of course we have the Magnetic”tails” as Steve likes to refer to them.  This was an extra item I asked to have included, it’s just a sample pack, end of rolls.. 2nds etc.

kk_magnet_velvet

Imageability make a  lot of Magnetic sheet products for commercial and  personal use including the calendar which was included in the prize box.   Now this  means there are end of roll pieces that aren’t big enough to use for that..BUT….. it’s perfect for crafters.

ziggy_alpha3

Steve’s idea of end of roll “scraps” or “tails” make me laugh… and his idea of seconds…even more so.  I have bought retail products with more defects lol.   Bless his heart but  you can’t fault them for their Quality Control.

die_storage

I  have been trying to convince him to sell his “tail” oooo er missus !!  naughty girls… I mean his magnetic tails…  in a crafters grab bag of some sort.  They are perfect for  crafters who like to do magnets, or someone needing a way to store and display their metal dies.

If you are interested in a grab bag,  leave a comment and I’ll  pass them along so he can see if there is enough interest to make it worth them packaging these up and working out a deal for Crafting Circle readers to get their hands on one..  When Steve says  tails and seconds… We’re talking  minimum of 6×6 .. right the way up to 24x24inches.  Don’t get too excited ..the bigger pieces are not as common, but there would probably be a fair selection of sizes in a grab bag.

By his definition –

“Seconds, they have a scratch or bump on them.  Even something you can only see with a magnifying glass is a second.  I would say seconds are better than tails.”

I can honestly say his seconds don’t look like seconds to me …  and even the tails… if you are using them for projects and it’s going to be covered with a design or used for die storage….  no brainer.   I’ll take all the seconds and tails in a heartbeat… I have loads of fun projects they are great for.

It cuts like a dream on machines, die cutters like the Big Shot and by hand or with a  paper trimmer.   Check out some of the projects I have made with… his “tails”

Ziggyboard…. how I love you soooo
You may or may not remember one of the very first items I got from CraftingAbility was  the Memory System Collection,  that set contains a mix of pens  and I love it.  This is what prompted me to request the white chalk writer pen seen in the prize package.  My collection had a selection of those chalk pens with various tips .. but they can also be purchased separately, or in sets with specific tips.  I have my eye on the  writer top set.  Another great pen to use in my Cricut with the adapter.  You can see them in action on  the Collection review, see post link below.

How to clean and restick old Cricut cutting mats

These are  questions that comes up a gazillion times with Cricut Explore users…  how do I clean my mats and what can I do to make them sticky again?

Condensed version for impatient peoples in a hurry:

  • Scrape off stuck card/paper with old credit card, or Cricut scraper
  • Clean mat with warm soapy water, leave to dry

    Congratulations… clean mats again.

  • Take gross old mat, scrub with Isopropyl alcohol and an old face clothe.
  • Rinse and leave to dry
  • Apply thin coat of Kuretake Zig 2 way glue
  • Wait till  glue turns from blue to clear

    Congratulations… sticky mats again.

However if you mats are creased, or sliced .. it’s just time to buy some new ones. I always have a stash of spare mats, I grab them when Cricut have sales 🙂

Now here’s the longwinded version for anyone who cares lol.

… well  here’s the answer to at least one of your problems.   First off let me just say that the mat I tested this on was “NASTY”  lol.  I had thrown it in a corner as no longer viable as a cutting mat and  it was in my pile of old mats I use for  various other things…. like protecting surfaces while I cut, glue, paint etc.  They may not be much use on my Cricut, but they are useful enough to keep for other purposes.

Usually when I “clean” my mats..I use an old credit card to scrape off any card or paper that is stuck to the mat and carry on my merry way.  When they get too grungy I run them under warm water with a bit of soap and a terry face clothe, when those two options no longer produce workable results… they are  relegated to the “other uses” pile.

Kuretake

So.. onto the no longer sticky problem… CraftingAbility sent me  this rather handy little glue stick in my latest package. It comes in various tip sizes depending on what your needs are.  This particular one is the  Zig Memory system 2 way glue  with the Jumbo 15mm tip.  My mat was gross….  cat hair, old paper residue, dust ..you name it, that had got suck on it over the months lol.  I have 4 cats  who just love to sleep on my craft space… so my good mats hang on a hook on the wall.  The old ones however get thrown in a stack..and since I am usually using the back side of them. I’m not overly concerned with what sticks to the front. Even when they lose their usefulness for cutting, they are still sticky enough to pick up all that crap.

So.. I grabbed an old mat to try this out with… I have heard a lot of great things about this glue, but I won’t lie… I really wasn’t expecting much as far as results go.  I’ve never had a 2 way glue that worked that well, so I was expecting it to be ….ok, but nothing great.

Warm water, soap and a rag weren’t going to cut it with this mat, so I grabbed my trusty bottle of alcohol and threw it on the mat.  Like magic all the crud was coming off….I was quite impressed by that, even if I wasn’t expecting great results with my mat experiment.  I figured the best way to tell was definitely to work with the cleanest old mat I could;  so I scrubbed it clean with alcohol, rinsed it off and left it to dry. Funnily enough it actually had a touch of tacky still on it after the alcohol cleaned it all up.  But definitely not enough for a run through my Cricut.

cricut_mat1

So now we are left with a clean-ish old mat.  You can still see the designs that scored into the mat from previous projects, but it was actually green again lol.  At a quick glance it almost looked like a new mat… score!

Ok so these  2 way glues, how they work is first off… you need to prime your glue.  The tip is dry when it arrives and priming it is very simple. Press the tip up and down on a scrap of paper.. you will see the tip nearest the body start to turn blue.  Don’t get too over excited and pump it like crazy…. that blue is the glue soaking down to the tip.  Once it has soaked all the way to the tip, you are ready to Rock n Roll.

Now one important thing to remember, DON’T get glue where your Cricut rollers go along the sides. I just masked mine off with a bit of scrap car to test this out on a section of the mat… but if you are doing a mat entirely, you might want to use some masking tape.  The glue goes on blue when wet, simply apply and wait till it turns clear… and VOILA.. sticky mats again.

cricut_mat2I have to say ….I am suitably impressed with this glue.  It’s sticky enough for anything I use on a regular basis…. 110lb card stock  etc.  It doesn’t leave any residue on the back of my project after removal.  I think I have to give this one a thumbs up.

Good Job Kuretake, yet another fab product to add to my growing collection of Zig craft supplies.  Only problem is I have a pile of about 15 old mats I now need to clean off and reapply sticky to lol.

If you are still unsure about this glue… stay tuned for two more uses I found for it while I was playing around… I know I for one will be keeping a bottle of this in my stash from now on 🙂 along with the new tape runner I also got to play with in this box.

The glue used in this post was provided free of charge for test and review purposes
