Have you seen the Cricut Mint Machine Bundle…?  check out that price and all the goodies that come with it.  I am so coveting the new Explore 2… I would love one of these.   If you are totally new to Cricut, which is rare nowadays… but always a possibility..   There are so many cool things you can do with these machines…way beyond what Cricut even show you. Card making, scrapbooking, home decor, kids crafts, personalized clothing, gifts, packaging…… just  the tip of the iceberg.

We had one member on the message board who made all of the signs  for his re-enactment group.

Me.. I bought mine to make custom photo mats then got hooked ..and there is still a tonne of things I haven’t even tried yet.

One of my favorite  things about my Cricut is the aftermarket Adapters I bought,  which sadly are not available for the ONE.. but they are available for the Explore, Explore Air and Air 2 and those are  FANTASTIC. these are pen adapters for the Circut by a company called Chomas Creations and they allow you to expand the range of pens you can use in your Cricut.  For people like me..that is HUGE…it has opened up a whole new world of potential projects that I wouldn’t normally attempt because my handwriting is terrible and my calligraphy skills.. non existent lol.  But not just that..  that means I can draw with so many more pens than before…

One of my favorites and one of the most popular pins on my pinterest page is this.. the powder embossing done on the Explore. Yup.. POWDER EMBOSSING drawn on the Cricut.

This allows me to take  designs and instead of cutting them, I can draw them and emboss them.. LOVE LOVE LOVE this.  There are other embossing pens, including one I made myself.. but these Zig Embossing pens coupled with the Chomas Adapter.. SWEET !!!

Anyone who is a regular on here knows how much I love my Zip pens.. and  most all of them will work in my Cricut with the adapter… with the exception of the  big chalk pens. But that is ok…. because I can outline on the Cricut then trace over it with my bigger pens when I want to do chalk signs.  Way better than anything I could ever achieve by hand.

And of course.. the ..  how could I not share what is probably my favorite paper to use on the Cricut.. this stuff is AWESOME.

It cuts beautifully, looks and feels amazing and gives a little extra something something to projects.

These projects were done with Black Velvet paper, but it comes in a bunch of other colors.. including white, which I love to print and color digital stamps on.

Did I mention stencils…  check out this etched glass beer stein I made a couple of years ago using a stencil I made and cut on the Cricut. This was for one of our message board challenges. I  Just cut my stencil from vinyl, slapped it on..slapped on etching cream and voila.. a fun beer mug  ūüôā

…so by now, if you are new to the Cricut….you are probably beginning to realize the Cricut can do a lot more than just use images on cartridges and on Design Space Access…. Yup you can upload your own designs or designs purchased elsewhere. Card templates, toppers, digital stamps.  I’ve  got a confession… I don’t subscribe to Access, I own probably 10 cartridges.. and I use my Cricut to make a lot of cool projects.   So if the price of Access, or the designs not being to your taste is something that was holding you back ..  never fear… this machine still has a lot to offer.

Print and Cut is fantastic, and when the DS3 ( Design Space update) comes out soon… it’s going to be even better.  I for one.. can’t wait.  DS3 has so many cool new features… admittedly there are still some things I would love to have added on…  because I am used to having them in my graphics programs.. but it’s not a big deal to do it externally and then upload them.

Check out some of these fun projects done using Cricut Print and cut…

CraftsUPrint Cricut SVG cut file Catch up!

I had a bunch of new files before Christmas that I didn’t get to  make up….so I decided to play catch up and zipped through a few of them tonight. One of them was already cut, another was already made up..I just didn’t get a chance to photograph it.  The other two I had made up, but messed up … so these were remakes and I actually like these versions better anyway LOL.

Now bear in mind I get SVG’s because I have a Cricut Explore, but most of these designers design in multiple formats for various cutting machines.  So when I refer to design space or Cricut,  that doesn’t mean you can’t use these cut files too…check and see.

Also… just an FYI, these files are not always as standard.  I  import them into Design Space and tweak them a little to suit my own needs. Changing cut areas to write, duplicating layers and using the contour tool to remove the cut outs etc to create a solid background on layers…  moving score lines to give a 3/4 fold etc.  So please bear in mind most of these files come with a center fold and are  set up for cutting, not writing.  If you are new to the Cricut, you may not know how  to modify things like that yet… never fear..it’s not rocket science.

Ok first one  was a remake… I originally started with a watercolored background in the cutouts, looked great but I bombed it when I stuck in on the inside… so take 2.. has a vellum insert and some cute pink ribbon detailing.  I scalloped the card on my paper cutter for a softer edge.

This cut file is: floral card 2 by Clive Couter, I have a few of his designs and really enjoy using these.

Next is a  simple little hello card. I had pre-cut this on green glitter card with the intention of using a Christmas design, but Christmas is long gone… so I just switched out that idea and  used a stamp from one of the new Layering sets by Hampton Arts.  I die cut the circle with a die from some Steampunk gears I picked up on Ebay.  It is stamped with Stazon and colored with Zig Clean Color… and a simple little “Hello” die sentiment, again an Ebay buy.

This cut file is from: over-the-fold-cards-1 by Lyn Simms

The next one was  done on black card using  a Zig chalk pen and pencils and I added an oversized die cut sentiment. I also flipped it on it’s side.  You will need a Chomas Adapter to use the Zig pens to write and draw on your Cricut Explore.

This cut file is: floral-over-the-edge-5
by apetroae-stefan

This one I duplicated the layer, welded  the holly leaves and  then  moved the score line to create a half fold hard.  I would probably have added in some red cabochons for the holly berries… but to be honest.. I have no idea where I stuck them lol.

Sympathy card drawn with a Chalk Marker pen on the Cricut Explore

I adapted this CUP cut file to draw the design on my Cricut Explore, as opposed to cutting it.  Love this effect!

I imported the SVG file into Design space, created a duplicate and used the contour feature to create a cut file of the outline, I then switched the original from cut, to write and used a Zig  dual tipped chalk pastel marker pen to draw the design.  I added in some tiny pearl cabochons and a sympathy sentiment die by  Gina Marie Designs.

This would look great done in a black pen  on white then colored with markers too.

I love the versatility of these over the edge card cut files.  This one I re-proportioned to create a square card, instead of the original rectangular card.

The 3 C’s of Crafting .. Crazy, Cricut and Chomas

.. blend that all in with some Fabric pens and a Walmart bed sheet and what do you get. ¬†Some fun experimentation again…. I love goofing off ¬†LOL

Having a quick play with some new Fabric pens I got from CraftingAbility recently in my Cricut Explore. Drew this Flower Block by Bugaboo stamps on my Cricut with a Fabric pen and then colored it in with more fabric pens…same brand, different type and different tips. For this test piece I actually wanted a kind of rustic boho look.. so I didn’t sit down to color it up perfectly as it will be added to a project with a patchwork style. Plus I only have the black for outlining and then a red, blue, yellow, white combo pack for everything else. Definitely gave me a good idea of how they work and what I can and can’t do with these..so now I know what to order for additional colors and what type suits which kind of style and project.. Woot.

It’s amazing what you can do with an $8 Walmart bed sheet lol. ¬†I think the bleed might have been less if I had put the bonda sheet stuff on first, but I appear to have mislaid that box in all of the past few weeks of madness here lol ..and I am not cutting up 600 thread count Egyptian sheets to see if they have a better bleed resistance lol. ¬†Plus to be honest I kinda like it as it gives that had drawn, hand made look instead of the perfectly faked reproduction ¬†look lol.

anywho… here it is in progress .. a bed sheet, 5 pens a Cricut Explore and a Chomas Creations Adapter…. and this cute little flower Block ¬†from a set by Bugaboo Stamps. ¬†I ironed it ¬†after the outlining and again after the color.. ¬†just to stabilize the colors while I worked on it.

Floral overlay border edge acetate card

This is one of the new ¬†CraftsUPrint ¬†cut files I picked up and made into an acetate panel card. ¬†It’s another cut file by Tina Fitch called Swirl¬†Sided Card and it is available in various cutting machine formats. I cut this on my Cricut Explore using Recollections Black card for the background and ¬†110lb Index stock for the swirls. ¬†I bet it would
look gorgeous with black velvet paper on White too.

I scored this at an offset so that I could add in an acetate window and bottom border, then added in some  small punched flowers with pearl centers.  Then I finished it off with a sentiment die from my recent Ebay Haul, again in 110lb white card stock.

cup_floraledge_wmd

What I love about these style of cut files is that they are very flexible and can be used in various ways, not just the way the original file comes.  I moved the score line and added a window to this one with a base strip.  But I also ran a quick test piece through my Cricut to show you  how you can switch it out from cut to write and achieve effects like this too.
cup_cut_file_ds
This is ¬†a Zig Embossing writer pen, they don’t fit the original ¬†pen holders for the Cricut… but they work fantastic in the Chomas Creations ¬†Adapters I have. This is the Marker Adapter and so far it has fit all of my Zig pens ¬†from my Memory System Collection and the embossing pens. That means it also fits the Zig Chalk Writer pens….which I love. ¬†You can see some pictures from past projects below this post. Please Note…. the Adapters do not fit the Explore ONE as it has a different holder and housing from the Original Cricut Explore, the Air and ..possibly the Air 2. ¬†These adapters are available for a variety of machines, so if you have something other than an Explore… check the ¬†site and see if your machine is one of them. ¬†There is however an Engraving tip for the Explore ONE.

zig_emboss_writer

I didn’t powder up this sheet so you can see some stray embossing powder…. That was deliberate.

A. it was ¬†a test piece… and B. It gives me the perfect excuse to ¬†show ¬†people who are new to embossing powder ¬†what to expect…and ¬†how to avoid this. ¬† If you are embossing projects, you need to coat your paper with a resist prior to stamping, or writing with embossing inks. ¬†You can buy special little powder puffs, but I find Johnson’s baby powder works just as well. ¬† Simply dust a thin coating over your paper before you emboss. ¬†I use an old makeup brush, or an old face clothe… sometimes just my hand.

zig_emboss_writer2
Anywho… just thought I would show you a few extras while I shared my latest card. ¬†With all the new Cricut owners again this holiday, I thought it was a good time to show off ¬†some of the fab cut files that are available to machine cutters and also some of the cool accessories and extras that you ¬†may not have seen before.

Happy Mail….Spice up your life with some “zig-a-zig-ah”

Soooo…. all you closet 90’s Spice Girl fans… are you singing yet? lol…. was too cool of a post title to pass up on that one lol..and so appropriate…I had the ultimate “Zig a Zig Ah”¬†moment when I opened this one up.

As mentioned in the previous post about Gina Marie dies… I had some tough choices to make with my little spending spree .. this time the Zigs won out. ¬†That is not to say the Expanded Chameleon Pens set is off the table…. it’s just ¬†biding its time hahaha.

So regulars on the blog are well aware of my love of Zig Kurecolor pens ¬†.. I only have a handful of colors out of the 130 something color range. Have.. let me rephrase that, HAD…. only a handful….I now have TWO handfuls lol.¬† As some of you are also aware, I do review products for ImageAbility now and then and they also sponsor prizes on the blog…but let me ¬†just say I do also buy my own and they get ¬†treat just the same. ¬†What you get is my opinion based on my preferences and my style and my experience when using them…nothing more, nothing less.

This time I scored both my own purchase… and a few extras kindly ¬†added in by the CraftingAbility ¬†team.. thanks guys ¬†ūüôā¬†I love surprises in my happy mail.

…so the important stuff….what did I get? ¬†Well for starters I picked up 14 new colors in ¬†my Kurecolor pens. ¬†Now for those of you who haven’t seen these in previous posts, these are not the refillable version… these are the Zig Manga Kurecolor pen version with the fine tips… but .. between you and me.. you can refill them and they are the same colors as the refillables… so you can order refills too. ¬†I love the tips on these, the fact that they are slimline and that they fit in the Cricut adapters I have, should I ever feel the need. ….so this is my pen of choice when it comes to the Zig Kurecolors. ¬†Although these do not have replaceable tips… technically.. lol..I find the Kurecolor tips to be VERY durable.. so that is not really a big concern of mine.

  • Bimoji Marker pen – fine tip
  • Mangaka Marker Set – 3 tip sizes. these were a very welcome suprise as I use these type of detailer pens a lot. and this set has 3 tip sizes… so I will definitely be playing with these.
  • Another surprise in my packet was this Twin Black tips set – if you ever saw the Memory system kit I have… these are the same tips selection..but all black. Scroll, brush, fine, writer, calligraphy and chisel. ¬†Each pen has two tips..either two of the same in 2 sizes, or 2 different tips. Definitley a welcome surprise for someone like me who likess to draw and write on the Cricut. ¬†these have ¬†definitley been ¬†the better pens as far as durability goes for that purpose as the tips don’t seem to be affected at all, unlike other pens I have used on it.
  • Then we have one of my favorites…if you ever saw my post on embossing pens you have seen one of these. When I got mine I could only get my hands on a dual tip fine & chisel pen… so this time I ordered the writer as it has two sizes of writing tips. ¬†What I love about these and a lot of the Zig pens is that they work perfectly with my Amy Chomas Pen & Marker Adapters and are awesome for embossing on my Cricut. ¬†ImageAbility decided I needed to brush up on my hand writing skills I think because Steve¬†kindly upgraded me to¬†include the full set of Zig Embossing Pens. ¬†The full set includes the writing tips, the calligraphy tips as well as the fine and chisel and the scroll and brush tips. ¬†I guess I best get practicing LOL
  • Black Fabricolor twin tip Pen

Now I couldn’t place an order without ¬†grabbing some Photo Tape Refills..¬†I LOVE this tape runner. ¬†My Xyron Megarunner is fabulous for most paper craft projects, but I find this Zig Photo Tape to just have a little extra something, something for things like the foam sheets… and regulars know I love to pop my foam sheets¬†on a lot of projects.

….also included in this image is a couple of different sizes of the 2 way glue. ¬†I have the big applicator tip, but wanted to try out some of the smaller tips ¬†too.

And something that has me very excited…. double sided tape. ¬†Steve kindly threw in a reel of the commercial grade tape they use in another branch of the business after listening to me moan about wanting a really heavy duty tape for my foam ¬†and needing something that came in wide reels. ¬†It’s always handy to know a man who knows a man …. so I will be testing this out too. ¬†I threw a quick 1 inch strip on a piece of card and foam and so far, as I can tell… I could probably stick myself off the ceiling with this stuff lol. ¬†I need wide tape in big quantities at an affordable price… so 3 sheet packs just don’t cut it for me. ¬†I have one other ¬†reel I just ordered and should be here by Monday… I picked it up at a discount online and ¬†it’s 6 inches wide.

It will be interesting to see how they compare since one is marketed for commercial use and one is marketed for craft use. ¬†My biggest pet peeve is I really want it to ¬†have release paper on both sides… but I guess I can always add my own secondary release paper to these rolls. ¬†Stay tuned for updates on these tape reels later in the month if you have been looking for similar products.zig_adhesive
Then ¬†I found the extra goodies I wasn’t expecting.. I found a canvas tote bag, which is perfect for the Fabricolor pen I ordered.¬†And something ¬† that had been mentioned in a recent email and was definitely of interest to me…. a ChalkFlex sheet and white wet erasable chalk marker. ¬†Now this is a bit different to the original chalkboard vinyl I reviewed last year and have used in various projects since… this one isn’t black. ¬†It’s a really deep slate gray and has a subtle texture to it. ¬†Really looking forward to trying that one out.

zig_extras

almost forgot to include this one…. this is one of the wet erasable Chalk Pens, to go with the chalk board sheet.

zig-_chalk

….and there we have it… that is today’s happy mail from CraftingAbility.com and Cohas.com ¬†..time to get busy and have some playtime me thinks.¬† Stay tuned for more posts and projects and a closer look at some of these new pens in action.

Some products in this post were provided free of charge for review & project purposes.

Now those of you that were following the spotlight ¬†know that I had requested a few specific items ¬†to be included and that the box was the prize for the Amy Chomas Spotlight. ¬†I matched the spotlight and prize sponsor for a reason, the Amy Chomas Adapters mean… you can use these pens on your Cricut Explore etc …and ¬†one of these items I absolutely LOVE using on my Cricut.

ok so… let’s have a quick look see what Tee had in her box…

..and then we have ¬†the slate…. I LOVE this slate, but let’s face it.. my handwriting sucks and you can’t run this through the Cricut even with a fab adapter lol. ¬†But there are so many ways to use this slate, it’s gorgeous…. you just have to think outside the box. ¬† Stencils, transfer paper, stamping …or you can be like me and go totally in the other direction. ¬†I love to do 3D decoupage layered images…. ¬†so my first project with this slate was this one.

And then of course we have the Magnetic”tails” as Steve likes to refer to them. ¬†This was an extra item I asked to have included, it’s just a sample pack, end of rolls.. 2nds etc.

Imageability make a ¬†lot of Magnetic sheet products for commercial and ¬†personal use including the calendar which was included in the prize box. ¬† Now this ¬†means there are end of roll pieces that aren’t big enough to use for that..BUT….. it’s perfect for crafters.

ziggy_alpha3

Steve’s idea of end of roll “scraps” or “tails” make me laugh… and his idea of seconds…even more so. ¬†I have bought retail products with more defects lol. ¬† Bless his heart but ¬†you can’t fault them for their Quality Control.

die_storage

I ¬†have been trying to convince him to sell his “tail” oooo er missus !! ¬†naughty girls… I mean his magnetic tails… ¬†in a crafters grab bag of some sort. ¬†They are perfect for ¬†crafters who like to do magnets, or someone needing a way to store and display their metal dies.

If you are interested in a grab bag, ¬†leave a comment and I’ll ¬†pass them along so he can see if there is enough interest to make it worth them packaging these up and working out a deal for Crafting Circle readers to get their hands on one.. ¬†When Steve says ¬†tails and seconds… We’re talking ¬†minimum of 6×6 .. right the way up to 24x24inches. ¬†Don’t get too excited ..the bigger pieces are not as common, but there would probably be a fair selection of sizes in a grab bag.

By his definition –

“Seconds, they have a scratch or bump on them.¬† Even something you can only see with a magnifying glass is a second.¬† I would say seconds are better than tails.”

I can honestly say his seconds don’t look like seconds to me … ¬†and even the tails… if you are using them for projects and it’s going to be covered with a design or used for die storage…. ¬†no brainer. ¬† I’ll take all the seconds and tails in a heartbeat… I have loads of fun projects they are great for.

It cuts like a dream on machines, die cutters like the Big Shot and by hand or with a ¬†paper trimmer. ¬† Check out some of the projects I have made with… his “tails”

Ziggyboard…. how I love you soooo
You may or may not remember one of the very first items I got from CraftingAbility was  the Memory System Collection,  that set contains a mix of pens  and I love it.  This is what prompted me to request the white chalk writer pen seen in the prize package.  My collection had a selection of those chalk pens with various tips .. but they can also be purchased separately, or in sets with specific tips.  I have my eye on the  writer top set.  Another great pen to use in my Cricut with the adapter.  You can see them in action on  the Collection review, see post link below.

It’s a little bit of a mix… so you get to try out a bunch of stuff instead of just one thing. And most all of it is items I have myself and really like..so I figured someone out there might want to try them too.

Even I don’t know EXACTLY what will be in it… but I sent in my list of suggested items and asked for a special sampler pack to be put together just for this giveaway…. and I know at least some of them will make it into the box ūüôā

I’m excited to see what makes it into the mystery box too ūüôā
