Take a minute to stop and smell the.. daisies?

I love this image pretty-flower-girl by Bugaboo Stamps, so it was a no brainer when it came to choosing a DT image for this months Bugaboo Crafty challenge.  It’s a super simple, sweet image which I colored with Chameleon Pens and then cropped with one of my new In and Out dies by Gina Marie Designs Double Pierced In and Out Rectangle die set

The card background was done  with a stamp I had that matched the daisy in the image on a A2 card from a Michaels value pack. Of course I used my trusty Zig Photo Tape runner to attach it…
If you like the look of this die, check out my previous posts  on the front page showing off the fun Bonus cuts you can use to make some really cool frames.  If you are reading this post months down the road.. do a search for Gina Marie Designs and that should pull them up… or search the March 2017 archive.

Sneaky Peek.. You’ve been Framed !

So.. ready for a sneaky peek at a few more  fancy frames using the Gina Marie Designs Die Collection?  As you can tell I added a few more fun die sets to my collection this week .. so now I have even MORE combinations I can make up and play with.

I just ordered my final missing  die that I REALLY wanted for this project, the Dot Stud Rectangles.   The Dot Studs are the ones with the larger circle cuts…I have the circles now..as you can see in the picture and  already had squares, but Rectangles were  out of stock and I  REALLY REALLY like  the Dot Studs, so I had to go hunt a set down.  I think these are my favorite of all the IN/Out dies….  I hope that gets here soon.

There are so many combinations for this technique… and it’s such a great way to get a Bonus cut from your in and outs… expect to see these  A LOT in projects 🙂

Vintage portrait style watercolored magnet

Well.. what a mix of goodies ended up in this project… I think everything but the kitchen sink lol

This is a new magnet framed with the Gina Marie Designs combo die piece you saw in a post earlier today…  looks a bit different now though LOL.  It had a few layers of Tim Holtz distress ink, followed by two colors of DecoArt Metallic Lustre, a touch more distress ink…. then 3 layers of clear embossing powder.

The image is “Lavish” by Rick St Dennis, which is one of 3 new ones in this style that I picked up last night.  She is printed on Canson Mix Media 9×12icon and colored with Gansai Tambi Watercolors using an H2o Brush.  I mounted the image to a piece of  COHAS magnet using a commercial grade double sided adhesive tape and then attached the frame with Zig 2 Way Glue.

This one will be joined by the other two images who will be turned into magnets too and will be joining my Abandoned Art bucket and abandoned in the coming months.  If you want to lean more about abandoned Art there are links to several Facebook groups on the side of this blog.  It’s all about sharing the happy!

Nesting more dies for pretty frames again

I pulled out two more die sets to play with…. so here you go.. this is a frame made with 2 Gina Marie Designs dies sets. I personally nest and cut these at the same time using my We R Memory Keepers Genius Ultimate Magnetic Platform on my Sizzix Big Shot… but you could cut each die one at a time if you wanted to.

You will need at least one set of in and out or dual stitched dies to make these.. but you could just use a plain die  if you wanted a simple cut instead of two fancy ones.  Just pay attention to where the cut lines are on your dies.  I single stitched die would give you a simple inside to the frame but give you a stitched panel from the internal cut.. so you still get two usable pieces  🙂

I’ll pop in  additional posts, as and when I have  fun cut combos to share  🙂

Bonus ….Custom cut frames with Gina Marie Dies!

Time to get busy and knock out some sample combos.. these dies are going to be so much fun.  They are fabulous as intended with the in and out cuts; but they are even better when you start doubling them up to make frames

… and even better when you start making combos.
I had a quick play with some of my dies and came up with this one which I really like.  These frames are made up of :

MINI HEART LACE SQUARE DIE SET – GINA MARIE DESIGNS

and  the

DOT STUDS ON BOTH SIDES OF CUTTING LINE SQUARE – GINA MARIE DESIGNS

and then this image shows all THREE cuts
…and here is a sneaky peek at another combo…so stay tuned for more of these fun frames.  I wonder how many combos I can come up with without ordering any more new dies lol.  Although there are a few I might just have to grab to expand my frames capabilities lol.  These were made using my We R Memory Keepers Genius Ultimate Magnetic Platform on my Sizzix Big Shot

Gina Marie Designs – In and Out die sets * BONUS CUT !

Now this is something  not everyone has figured out yet about these great dual stitch dies, so I figured I would share… there is actually a THIRD cut. That’s right.. you don’t just get TWO cuts  per die,  if you are sneaky…. you can pull out a 3rd  really cool and useful cut. Just by combing  two of the dies from the set, VOILA.. you now have 3 cuts.

Now let me just say this is not as effective on some of the dies.. specifically the rounded corner ones. as the corner angles are not set up to form a uniform curve on the sizes. Individually you have the perfect corner cuts.. but combined.. it’s not a cut that nests well… saying that if you wanted to do it.. you just get a 3rd funky frame cut.. which you may actually like…. not everyone wants that uniform look.

Ok so what dies am I referring to? not the regular stitched dies.. but the new ones.  Just pop “In and Out” into the search function and you will get to see all of the new  double stitched dies I am referring to.  Now I don’t have ALL of these..and I can’t guarantee that all of the designs will  work for this technique…but if you are buying them anyway for the double cut.. you might as well at least know that a 3rd cut is possible. 🙂

I  can’t show you the full image as it is for an upcoming DT project… but you can get a sneaky peek at part of it, which shows the  traditional inner cut.

Now here is the fun part…. if you nest two of the dies on your cutting plate .. you can see on the left the traditional use, which is the inner and outer cuts… BUT you now have a THIRD cut.  Nesting your dies  gives you this double stitched frame cut too.  I discovered this last year  with my first Dual Stitched dies and  use this 3rd cut a lotWhat a great way to get even more value from dies that are already fantastic value…

Here you can see what I meant about the rounded corner dies… still a cool cut specially if you wanted to decorate the corners, or just wanted something a bit different.  You still get your regular in and out cut.. but the frame.. that’s just a cool unexpected bonus.

These are the 3 sets I just got… now be warned ladies these pierced dies have TINY holes and they are a bit more pernickety than your average die.. but totally worth it for the look you get.  I am really hoping  that Gina Marie Designs release this dual stitch design in more stitches soon.. the larger stud dot  and  all of the various stitches they already have on singles… I am ALL OVER THAT.  I love these dual stitch dies ..  or In & Out as they are called on the GMD descriptions. They need a new name… In & out just doesn’t cover how cool these dies really are lol.

Now I personally found that these cut much better for me on my machine using my Magnetic Platform.  I have read a lot of people complaining about their sizzix Platforms, but I actually picked up a We R Memory Keepers Platform last year on clearance at my local Michaels and it’s fab.  I just run these fiddily dies through back and forth, turn it round and run it through again to make sure I have even pressure. Not all machines cut the same pressure all over.. could be anything from worn bearings, to worn plates..or as in my case last year .. a broken chassis inside that you have no idea is even broken till you strip it down. It worked, but had uneven pressure issues… anyhwo there is a whole post somewhere on here about my little fun and games with my Big shot last year and the Fabulous Customer Service by Sizzix.

As I was saying I just use that WRMK’s magnetic base on these.. I added a card layer below the die and it doesn’t effect the hold of the magnets at all..and then used the thicker top plate from the set.  If you are still having any probs with a clean cut.. be sure to run it through back and forth, rotate  the plates and run it through again..and then  if you have to.. and your project permits.. just rotate  it so the dies go through at an angle.. or 90’s if it fits…. and you shouldn’t have any issues.  The biggest problem is cleaning up the hundreds of tiny cut outs haha.. that stuff gets everywhere.

Thou shall hev a fishy on a little dishy…..

Ok..are you ready for this one? LOL.

I am a creature of moods and I already  kinda jumped the gun a few weeks ago and got over zealous and posted what ‘should’ have been my DT project. I  liked it so much I couldn’t wait to share, which is great.. except that left me needing to do a second project.  I was desperately trying to come up with  something I really wanted to do and of course ….I got sidetracked coloring Roosters and cutting cut files and all that other fun stuff… like you do LOL

So here I am, or was ….  half a day left to pull off a Project… and my lil guy wanted to go out. So off we went to Michaels and then Toys R Us and while I was there I picked up some stamps for him and some bits n bobs for me ….INCLUDING  something I had wanted to try for ages.

I had been wanting to make a Chipboard project and I found this great 2 pack of Chipboard albums for just $4.99 ..it was perfect. Well except I only had a few hours to actually pull it off lol.  So my apologies for the late showing… but I hope it’s worth it and you at least enjoy this crazy tangent head post.

Because I am not just going to show you  the project…

I’m going to share with you some of the origins of what inspired me to make it.  If you are British, some of it may be familiar… if you aren’t .. maybe you will learn something new.

Ok.. so here it is , this is the front cover of my ‘Album’  and I chose the smaller of the two Chipboard kits which measures approx 7×6.5.  My image this month is called Girlz – wiggle the bait

I covered it with a foiled ‘fish scale’ sheet from a DCWV I won called Coastal It has some fab papers in it..in fact I used  one of them in that other project too.

I  used Elizabeth Designs double side adhesive to attach it to the chipboard… just for speed since I have a 6 inch wide roll of it sitting here staring at me lol.I cut the paper slight over sized and used a punch to make matching holes to the chipboard.  popped it on .. smoothed it out and  tucked in the edges.. then I lined it with a matching sheet of Recollections 65lb card.

Image was cut on the Cricut and colored with Chameleon Pens… I used Zig Photo Tape to adhere all of the fishing themed  die cuts  from the Gina Marie Dies “Gone Fishing” set and the net is from the Gina Marie Lacey Lattice die set

What it  actually will be when I get the contents pages done….is a Recipe book…. for Fish. I have a friend who’s husband fishes… when he isn’t falling off  2 foot high walls and breaking bones that is… yes seriously he broke his pelvis fishing a few  years ago by falling off a two foot wall.  We jokingly refer to him as the $6 man, he has been rebuilt ..almost from scratch these past few years.

…and my friend…. well she loves to cook..and pin recipes and post them all over my Facebook feed at 3 am and gives me the munchies.. so I am dedicating this project to those two.  I left the top space blank as it will be personalized ..so for privacy reasons… I will add that later  🙂

The lyrics on the front of the book read:

Dance ti’ thy daddy, sing ti’ thy mammy,
Dance ti’ thy daddy, ti’ thy mammy sing;
Thou shall hev a fishy on a little dishy,
Thou shall hev a fishy when the boat comes in.

These were the lyrics for a show back in the 70’s  when I was growing up in the Northern part of the UK. It was called When the Boat comes in and starred James Bolam, a very well reknowned British actor who has starred in a bunch of great Tv series.  It was a period drama series set in post-World War I northeast England…and I grew up watching this.  I lived on the North East coast till I was about 8 years old, so  I have fond memories of the coast and all the small fishing villages… and the smell of Kippers smoking.

How I miss those Geordie tones!

anywho… this was the inspiration for my theme.

The inside pages where the recipes and such like will be is made of  the same 65lb card stock as the inside liner, in various hues of blue.   I’ll be adding in little fun facts, quotes and images and such to the pages as well as room to write, or stick recipes.  It’s kind of like a journal… but for recipes…with some fun facts and images thrown in.

So there you have it.. a Fun Fish filled Recipe book  with a touch of British Nostalgia thrown in.

Digi Artists Challenge September – November 2016

SEE UPDATES to the Challenge here

artist_challenge

Wow… Last quarter’s maiden Artist Challenge  got off to a slow start, I think everyone was either shy…or playing their cards VERY close to their chest.  But what a finish huh?  As a brand new concept and challenge, it’s natural that it will take time to pick up and gather momentum…but I had such a blast seeing all the fab Shakespeare inspired images…which of course by now are, or should shortly be available in the respective Artists stores… so be sure to check those out.

and the winners are… EVERYBODY… artists and crafters alike.  So congrats to  everyone on some fantastic new digis   <<INSERT APPLAUSE SOUND HERE …… LOL

This is a challenge for Digi Stamp Artists to play with new ideas, have some friendly competition and get the  creative juices flowing.  It’s a fun community art event which we hope will be a quarterly  occurrence.  It’s a new spin on the  old card challenge idea…  but now our favorite artists get to  play.

New artists are welcome too, if you are a new digi artist trying to get established and meet a fab group of established artists  and mentors, or an existing artist in need of some fresh fun ideas.  Come on in, the water is great.

Now onto the new challenge…. I ummed and agghed and ummed some more while trying to decide on a new theme.  It’s perfectly timed for a Christmas theme….BUT… all the artists usually have one of those running independently anyway..

The idea behind this challenge is to break out of the comfort zone and  so..without further ado.  The new theme is….

“In a state”

deadline midnight Central time November 30th, 2016

This is open to anything related to the theme ….and how you interpret it.  It’s pretty loose so there should be lots of room for  personal style in this one again.

I shall give a few ideas to show the flexibility of this theme ..and then you can run with it however suits you.

State of mind
State of shock
Texas themed
New Hampshire themed
Messy
State flower
State animal
State flags
State of emergency
State of confusion
State of undress <<<< someone will go there  LOL
Garden State
State of the Union
State fair

For those of you who like to draw characters, there are opportunities to practice facial expressions and body language.

For the quirky ones among you… again plenty of fun expressions to be had.

For the saucy ones… well no need to guess where you are going

For those of you who love animals, nature, floral and such… there  are plenty of ways to make that work too.

If you want to play and are stuck for ideas… you can always hit me up….I am full of crazy ideas lol.

Spotlight Series Day 25 – Christine, Penny Blossom

Who are you ?

I’m Christine Porter Lofaro and I am the owner and artist of Penny Blossom

cropped-small-vintageheader

www.pennyblossom.com

https://www.facebook.com/pennyblossomdigistamps/

Where are you ?

I am Maltese and live in Malta which is a little island in the Mediterranean

When did you first start drawing/designing seriously?

I have always liked drawing and painting and I chose Art as my main subject at secondary school. There was no turning back since then 🙂

What is your favorite piece in the whole store?

I think I would go for the latest which is Little Red Riding Hood

LittleRed_watermark_sm

Who is your inspiration/muse?

Oh this is a tough one! I think inspiration is something ongoing and sometimes little things tend to inspire me without really thinking much about it. These are things that at one point come in the foreground! I am also inspired by many different artists but surprisingly sometimes it is not even their style of work that inspires me but the fact that I see them practicing their art. This instils in me a longing to work on my own art. Then there are also many art styles such as manga art, pop surrealism, and art nouveau which I really feel that I am attracted to.

How many people work with/for you ?

I don’t have other people working with me but I’m very grateful that my husband takes care of the technical side of Penny Blossom…I send him a big thanks 🙂

Name your favorite cartoon?

Anything Disney!

Favorite quote?

Life is like a garden, you reap what you sow.

What’s your guilty pleasure ?

Binge watching TV series when I have the luxury to do so, buying and hoarding art supplies, having cappuccino and cake.

What’s your favorite color?

Purple has always been a favourite…then there are the periodic obsessions…which right now is duck egg blue

What was your favorite subject in school…?

I love many subjects. Art was obviously a favourite but at the same time I also liked sciences and studied them in parallel.

If you were getting a tattoo… what would it be?

If I was not too concerned with the permanence of tattoos I would get two small butterflies on my hipline…one of my digis shows something similar to what I like 🙂

If you got offered a weekend in a haunted  house/castle etc.. would you say yes?

As much as I love castles and beautiful historical places I think I would chicken out!

When no one is listening…. do you sing in the shower?

Oh a big yes….and even when people are listening…before I got married my family had to put up with a lot of singing lol 🙂

What is your most popular item in the store/shop?

From the images that were given as a freebie for some time it will have to be Vigilante. Another popular image from the shop is A little Gift.

ImageA-Little-Gift

If you weren’t doing what you are doing now…. what job would you have?

This is another tough one….I like so many things….in another lifetime I would consider an airline pilot, an archaeologist, psychologist….well the list goes on 🙂

How long have you been in business?

I have started Penny Blossom four years ago in 2012 …..but had to put it on the back burner for some time while I was doing my doctoral research….I have been active again only recently

What’s your favorite craftroom/business supply or tool that you couldn’t live without?

I love so many things but I would choose something really basic….good quality paper and a few sharpened pencils

If you got locked in an elevator for 6 hours.. who would you most like to be locked in with ?

Gerald Butler 🙂

When you get the midnight munchies… what do you grab?

I don’t have the habit of snacking during the night…but if I feel hungry in the evening then I have to eat something or else I wouldn’t be able to sleep…usually it will be a ham and cheese toast or something savoury…won’t have sweets if I’m hungry

What’s your favorite event, or holiday of the year?

My birthday which comes in October and Christmas 🙂

What’s your favorite hobby when you want to relax

My work is in a way a hobby as well so I do consider drawing and painting as my hobby. Then if I am lucky and get some extra free time I love to do make-up…try out different products and looks…which in some way still involves colours, palettes and brushes 🙂

How long does the average design/art work take from concept to final product?

It varies for different images but on average it takes from 6 to 8 hours from the concept to having the final digi ready in the shop

When you are working, what is the view from your window like

I work in different places…some of my favourite work was done in coffee shops for example. I also spend quite some time in the studio and here the view is partly of buildings and partly of a lovely valley.

What’s the one song guaranteed to have you shaking your booty anytime, anyplace ..anywhere?

Right now that would be “If it Ain’t Love” by Derulo

What do you love most about all the people you meet through your work?

Their unique ways of seeing things and their unique interpretations. I also appreciate the honest feedback and the great support from other artists as well as from crafters and colourists

Which drawing/product are you the most proud of in your collection?

It is hard to choose because they all have a story or a particular meaning…..

From the older original range……I think the Explorer has particular significance …I also really like Hang in There

explorer

HangInThere

From the latest range I’m proud of Alice (which is a freebie that you can download)

And I also like the Holy Communion Girl 🙂
