February 2018 Crafty Awesomeness Challenge

Welcome and a huge Thank you to Digistamps4Joy who are this months sponsor,  It’s a pleasure to work with them for the first time on the blog challenge.  Looking forward to a great year and lots of fun projects.  If you haven’t already seen these stamps, hop on over and check it out.  We had such a tough time choosing which stamps we wanted to work with…  so much fun.  We finally narrowed it down to these two  images.

I will be posting my projects later this weekend.  I had a few hiccups, lost internet and had to deal with some legal issues.. but I am dying to get crafting again.  It’s been so long since I could just sit and have some craft time…I hope I didn’t lose my Mojo haha

KennyK and my ‘AHA moment’

Now I know there are a few of you who ¬†already started humming ¬†“Take on me” ¬†….even if only in your head. ¬†Admit it, you know the song and ¬†you secretly wished some hot guy would drag you off ¬†into the pages of a ¬†magazine.. or hot steamy romance book.

* whistles innocently.

Or if you are one of ¬†our male crafters.. maybe you want to be him instead and drag some cute chick off to woo with your sketchings. but that just sounds like the weird dude at the park… so … let’s not go there lol.

Well… ¬†here we are 30 years later.. and we’re not watching those sketchy scenes anymore. Most of us are either drawing them, or coloring them. ¬†I have to say, Morton Harket still looks pretty damned hot… I saw some recent pics and he scrubs up pretty good LOL.

Anywho, I digress… back to the project

and what a project this one was! as you can probably tell it’s inspired by…. AHA …. yup I had my AHA moment. ¬† Now ¬†this one was a doozy; ¬†it was quite a process just to get to this stage and I have a feeling by the time I finish matting and framing this guy, there is gonna be a second white mat ¬†with some comic strip style layout ¬†surrounding him and his black mat board. ¬†I guess we shall see…. one day.

I’ll show ¬†more details below.. but the quick run through on this one…

Canson Mixed Media Paper, colored with Chameleons, over color with Crayola Color Escapes Pencils… scanned, reprinted, background depth using a ¬†black Zig Scroll & Brush pen.. additional shading and outline definition ¬†done with a charcoal gray Color Escapes… signed .. matted.. BINGO

I find it useful to take progress pics as I work, so I can sit back and look at them ¬†on my comp as I drink my tea and take a break. ¬†For some reason it really helps me look at it with a more critical eye ¬†and helps me spot areas I may need to work on, better than looking at the actual project. ¬†It also gives me a more accurate view of¬†projects that are meant to be viewed at a distance…. like ¬†framed art etc. ¬†When I get up and walk off to do something…. I find propping up my work and leaving it in full view ¬†for a few hours, or days helps when I feel I am just not quite seeing the problem…. but I know it’s just not quite right.

I have a tendency to ruin ¬†projects by not knowing when to stop “trying” *sigh…. so I try and give myself breaks at strategic points, to ¬†avoid that happening so often.

What I really love about this particular project, is that the various stages of progression gave me some ideas  on other  things I wanted to try with this concept.  One of them being a version with only the skin colored in markers and pencil and the rest black and white/graycale.  I think that one will look really cool.

Anyway enough of my ramblings, let’s face it…..I just like to goof around and try things. Some work, some don’t….sometimes they all work for you… for different reasons and you have to decide which one to go with first. The only thing that matters is having fun and trying new things and NOT trying to compete with other crafters and constantly comparing your work to others. when it ¬†comes to art and creativity…. the rule is

….so here are the progress snapshots and the final ¬†project ¬†matted and ready to frame…or maybe double matted THEN framed later lol…and some product¬†links for anyone interested.

I printed light by adjusting the layer opacity in my graphics program on Canson Mix Media paper and then colored with Chameleon skin tone marker NU00. ¬†I know I know.. one shouldn’t color with markers on papers designed for ¬†other media…. but I have refills …and I can, because I want to …. I am such a rebel !!! ¬† LOL remember THERE ARE NO RULES!!

I would be lying if I said I recall exactly what colors I used at this stage.  I know the blue for the pants was BL4 Cornflower Blue.. but I used a mix of grays  for the hat, leather straps and chaps.  One of which I am pretty sure was  the CG8  Cool Gray from the original 22 pen set  and the others  came from the gray tones  5 pack.  Background was sketched in with pencil.

I tried detailing the outline with a fab new pen I got just before Christmas, it’s called a Bimoji Marker and this is the fine tip one… and I really like the look of it on ¬†the test piece on the right. ¬†Comp crashed and I got a print fail… so decided to use it as a test sheet. ¬†but it wasn’t quite gellin with what I had in my head for this particular piece. ¬†But this is definitely something I am going to ¬†use on another project, I love this sketchy look with impact.

In the end I compromised and did the detailing and outlines with a charcoal gray pencil. because I printed this as a soft print with light lines, It ¬†needed to be brought out in the coloring instead. ¬†This is the first time I have really tried the no outlines /soft outlines style… and I actually like it… for SOME projects. ¬†I think it really depends on the individual project and images as to whether pen, or pencil works best.

One last quick note… since I obscured the background with this sketchy AHA inspired ¬†look, don’t forget to add your artists signature back in somewhere on your piece. ¬†Mine is tucked up under the mat, but will also be added to the back on a label with details. ¬†Since this piece may well end up as an Abandoned Art Project at some point, I want to make sure credit is assigned to ¬†the artist… the one and only KennyK.

………. and so, here he is “Tex” by KennyK

This is one of my mystery DT projects from the January 2017 Crafty Awesomeness Challenge which you are more than welcome to come enter.

Where are you ?

When did you first start drawing/designing seriously?

I worked as a “serious” artist from 2010 – 2013, I’d never do that again. I prefer art to be fun ūüėČ

What  job did you have BEFORE you started drawing/designing for a living?

I was a software developer before I moved to France, and the last time I worked for a salary was on technical support for World of Warcraft, a video game.

If you could hang out with ANYONE in the world …. ¬†who would it be?….and what is the one question you would want to ask them?

Stephen Hawking. I’d probably ask him a stupid question and spend my life mortified that I had embarrased myself.

What’s your favorite color?

What is your favorite piece in the whole store?

Thank you for the Flowers

Who is your inspiration/muse?

Cartoons like Sponge Bob, Oggy and the cockroaches, Video Games.

Name your favorite cartoon?

At the moment I’m watching Adventure Time, that is pretty cool. I like everything by Miyasaki.

Favorite quote?

‚ÄúIf you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.‚ÄĚ – Martin Luther King Jr.

What was your favorite subject in school…?

Maths. Funnily enough I didn’t like art at school, I found it restrictive and boring drawing pieces of wood and fruit.

If you were reincarnated…who would you have been in a former life?

A spider.

What is your most popular item in the store/shop?

I don’t know how long the bunny will be popular now that spring is over, but I think a lot of people who visit my store will like coffee whatever the weather.

Who was your first celebrity crush…and have you drawn them?

Danny Kaye. I never drew him, but I think his goofiness has inspired some of my characters.

If you weren‚Äôt doing what you are doing now…. what job would you have?

Software Developer. Although I’m a bit out of date these days. I do video game design on the side to keep my hand in.

What’s your favorite craftroom/business supply or tool that you couldn’t live without?

My mechanical pencil, if I don’t have at least 3 in the house at one time, I start to get nervous. I seem to have bought about 20 in the past year. I think my cats eat them.

If your parents had named you something else… what would you have picked?

Pollyanna. My mum wanted to name me that after the novel.

What’s the one song guaranteed to have you shaking your booty anytime, anyplace ..anywhere?

Bob Sinclar – Rock This Party (Everybody Dance Now) – oh my. It has the “everybody dance now” sample from the 90s, which makes me forget I’m over 40. I’m going to kill myself one of these days or break something.

Who scared you most as a kid when you were being naughty.. your parents or the boogey man?

I was nearly never naughty, but when I was it was the “disappointed” face of my mother that scared me the most.

Show me the drawing you think most closely resembles you physically or personality-wise

This is me multitasking, I wear lots of hats ūüôā

muchogrande (3)

What do you love most about all the people you meet through your work?

Everyone that I have met so far have been so nice. I think the crafting community really look out for artists and are very supportive. I really like that, rather than creating a “finished” product that people consume, digis are more like collaborating with hundreds of very individual artists all over the world, and I love to see how everyone interprets one image in their own way.

If you were a classic car…. what would you be?

I don’t know if I’d be it, but I always wanted to own a Chevy Camaro 69 SS.

When you are working, what is the view from your window like?

I’m lucky to have a big garden with trees and birds that play in them. Our garden is a bit unkempt so it’s a bit like living in a forest sometimes.

Which decade do you think had the best music?

70s Disco.

What’s your favorite hobby when you want to relax?

Independant video games, board games, gardening, sci-fi films, audible books about space.

Which drawing/product are you the most proud of in your collection?

This one was quite difficult to get the balance right, and I was quite proud of myself for even attempting the pose ūüôā

KennyK New Release & Club Challenge Card

KennyK Just released some fab new images which are perfect for male cards…. and we all know how hard they can be sometimes. ¬†Check these out over at KennyK Stamps

I decided to try something a bit different and  so I printed this guy out on some Canson Mix Media paper I bought to use with my Gansai Tambi watercolor paints.  This is colored with Chameleon Pens and Ranger Distress Pens.

I cut a 6×6 card base on Recollections Cardstock, it’s a deep gray/barely black with texture and kinda cool.

I cut a Oval out and then did a partial cut on the image; so that the main image is behind the oval, but the beer mug is on top.  The inside is lined  to hide the image  on the inside and to give a surface for sentiments messages etc.

Then I popped “bubbles” all over the ¬†card with a 2 inch throat punch lined the inside with yellow Recollections card and colored the bubbles through from the front.

Paper Crafting… not just for the ladies.

One of the ladies on my facebook shared this article with me today..and it made me think about the members on our own message board. Most all of the crafters I know.. are women. But there are a lot of men out there who craft..and kids too.

So I wanted to share this post and a few other links to some awesome male crafters… ladies, just remember how you complained about your man having no interest in your crafting…when he takes over your Cricut and coloring supplies LOL. My son is almost 4 and he loves to craft with me, I think it’s great and totally encourage it. Hubby …not interested, but he tries to get involved and he and my son did decorate me a frame for Christmas which was great.
<<insert awww moment

Now I have to admit, I am not totally convinced this story is for real..it has the onion written all over it LOL. For those of you not familiar with the onion, it’s a spoof news site.  So when you read this story, bear it in mind… but also remember the moral of the story..so to speak.

–  Read the article here http://www.thefrowzy.com/

And now for some “real” male crafters and artists who have made a place in a female dominated  arena.

Header_GrayFirst off… if you are a Cricut user, you probaly already know all about Omar Toro… the face behind AwesomeSVG’s.

Omar is the man behind designs such as these:

CRAFTS by two

Anyone who has been around long enough to search for a Cricut Mystery Box  content reveal… has seen these guys.  They have a fab youtube channel with great  video tutorials, product reveals. These guys are a lot of fun to watch as well as very informativecraftsbytwo-humor…. check them out.

Anthony Paterson aka The Male Card Maker is a British Card Maker… check out his  fab cards below:

so ladies… and gents… here are just three…. or possibly 4 Crafty men who deserve a slap on the back for sharing their talents with the crafting community  and showing everyone that  crafting is not just for girls.  There are hundreds, thousands.. probably millions of talented men  out there…. so when your son, or husband takes an interest in crafting…. don’t just assume they are showing polite disinterest.  You may have another creative genius right in your own family ūüôā

Next month I’ll be  showing you some  awesome arty males that have made a name for themselves as digital stamp artists.
