My latest happy mail. Zig Kuretake Manga Art goodies

I saw something on a live video from CHA that I wanted to try out; I had no idea what they were using on the demo as far as pens and tips went, but I figured I wanted to try it bad enough.. so I grabbed ALL of them lol. Typically these pens are used for Manga art and inking in illustrations, but I saw them or…. something like these used for something else entirely and I wanted to have a play.

Admittedly I will probably use them for the intended use as well.. now that Steve over at CraftingAbility popped in a few extras for me to try out. I wasn’t expecting a beginners guide to drawing Manga to be tucked into my order and a new Manga Pen I haven’t tried yet… but heh.. why not .. LOL.

I had a quick flick through the booklet and it has some easy beginner examples and guides .. some info on drawing faces, clothing folds, shadows and highlights and lightsource so all the basics we learn in drawing and coloring. So, maybe I’ll have a little play with that. I don’t draw by any stretch of the imagination.. but even I like to doodle now and then. Usually when I am on the phone chatting haha..I am notorious for doodling on anything at hand haha.

Now bear in mind I have not used an ink pen in YEARS.. so it will take some practice to get used to working with ink again.  But I am excited to play with these and then try out that idea I saw at CHA.  I have quite a few different Zig Kuretake products, as you know if you are a regular …  some bought, some provided free of charge for testing and to provide projects for review….and so far.. I have not been dissappointed in anything. Seriously.. I refuse to say something is great if I don’t like it…so when I say I like it or LOVE it as is most often the case… I mean it.  Now anyone who is a regular knows I like to experiment and play with allsorts of ideas, and that I love trying new techniques..so  take into account your own personal styles and  tastes when  picking products.. what suits one does not suit all.

Ok so what did I order...everything on this page lol…

I picked up the pen nib holder… can’t do much without one of those lol. It’s a nice lacquered wood with a rubber grip.  I have to admit I am not a big fan of pens with rubber grips usually, but this one is nice and comfy and I don’t feel like I am getting stuck on it when I move my fingers around like some.  I have hypermobile joints and sometimes my hands lose grip when they flare up…. but  just playing with it out of the packet.. it seems to be something I’ll work fine with.  It’s not too fat , nor to thin and the rubber grip is smooth.. haha I sound like I popped out of Goldilocks and the three bears ..oops

I picked up a pack of each of the nibs to test them out, since I really didn’t know which ones would work best for what I have in mind, plus a selection of nibs would be useful for a few other things I had in mind… all of which you will see in posts coming this month.. maybe even a few short vids for a bit of fun.

I’ll share more on the Manage Drawing guide and Manga Flexible Pen in another post.

Be Beautiful – layered card with watercolor effect

This is my latest project and features  an image by Cute As A Button “Wedding Day” and a bunch of  things from my latest craft hauls.  This is my December Inspirational Project  and also  my No. 3 Sketch with extra credits for the Message Board Sketch Challenge.   Some of the ladies and I are old friends from the Cricut Message Board days and this is a continuation of an old challenge on there. It’s a just for fun  monthly sketch challenge and all are welcome to come hang out and play.

I wanted to try something I’d been playing with the other week, the watercoloring with printer ink.. but expanded on the idea by including some of the new Zig Kuretake Manga ink I just got.  I picked  this particular ink for the fact it was water based, so I knew it would dilute and work with this technique.  It is a fast drying ink that becomes waterproof once dry and  smudge free with Alcohol markers.  Exactly what I need!  I also picked up a Fine H2o brush in this packet…  I have tried cheap versions of these which work.. ok.. but this one is definitely a much higher quality.
caab_b_beautiful_closeup_wmded
I gave the image a color wash with just water and the printer ink, then I slowly layered in a diluted ink to add in more depth and shadow.   It has a very subtle color because I  diluted it and then absorbed the excess as I worked,  but straight out of the bottle.. this is black as black can be. If you let it soak in instead of absorbing  it … the colors are also more pronounced.

The reason I picked up this ink is because  Artists all have their own style of drawing, some use thinner lines than others and that effects the amount of ink you have to pull from the printed image.  I have a gorgeous set of  Gansai Tambi watercolor paints I could have used..BUT  I wanted to experiment… PLUS these inks are waterproof once dried AND I can use the ink with various writing/drawing tools.

k let’s face it.. I just wanted to play with something new lol.  Wait till you get to see the other bottle of ink I picked up….

I added in some really subtle color on the image using my Chameleon Pens
NU00, BL2, BG1 & GR1.

This image was printed on  a Canson Mixed Media sheet  through the Epson Eco Tank.

ok.. now onto  the card itself.  I am not really  a fussy card maker..  but I do like to play around with ideas and try new things out, so now and then I’ll get a bit “fluffy”.

I had some fab new dies from Gina Marie designs I wanted to try out and so I mixed it up with some of those, some GM’s from a previous order, a die from my latest Blitsy order and some  Cheapie imports from Ebay.  And then I  had a play with my Martha Stewart punches….  for good measure.

Starting at the back and working forward..

If you want a continuous border, these punches all come with cutting instructions and sizes so you can get perfect  borders.  For this project I  wanted to play with an off cut pattern, just to add a little interest to the background.

On top of that are 3 cuts from the Gina Marie Flower Branch Die.. 2 were inked with a blue pad..one darker than the other for  some contrast and pearl cabochons were popped in the smaller centers for some subtle bling.

The butterfly and beautiful  cuts are from Gina Marie
The “Be” sentiment is from Blitsy
….and finally the small leafy sprigs came from Ebay.

I used  a mix of glues and tapes… details and links for the products used can be found below for anyone interested.

Happy Mail….Spice up your life with some “zig-a-zig-ah”

Soooo…. all you closet 90’s Spice Girl fans… are you singing yet? lol…. was too cool of a post title to pass up on that one lol..and so appropriate…I had the ultimate “Zig a Zig Ah” moment when I opened this one up.

As mentioned in the previous post about Gina Marie dies… I had some tough choices to make with my little spending spree .. this time the Zigs won out.  That is not to say the Expanded Chameleon Pens set is off the table…. it’s just  biding its time hahaha.

So regulars on the blog are well aware of my love of Zig Kurecolor pens  .. I only have a handful of colors out of the 130 something color range. Have.. let me rephrase that, HAD…. only a handful….I now have TWO handfuls lol.  As some of you are also aware, I do review products for ImageAbility now and then and they also sponsor prizes on the blog…but let me  just say I do also buy my own and they get  treat just the same.  What you get is my opinion based on my preferences and my style and my experience when using them…nothing more, nothing less.

This time I scored both my own purchase… and a few extras kindly  added in by the CraftingAbility  team.. thanks guys  🙂 I love surprises in my happy mail.

…so the important stuff….what did I get?  Well for starters I picked up 14 new colors in  my Kurecolor pens.  Now for those of you who haven’t seen these in previous posts, these are not the refillable version… these are the Zig Manga Kurecolor pen version with the fine tips… but .. between you and me.. you can refill them and they are the same colors as the refillables… so you can order refills too.  I love the tips on these, the fact that they are slimline and that they fit in the Cricut adapters I have, should I ever feel the need. ….so this is my pen of choice when it comes to the Zig Kurecolors.  Although these do not have replaceable tips… technically.. lol..I find the Kurecolor tips to be VERY durable.. so that is not really a big concern of mine.

  • Bimoji Marker pen – fine tip
  • Mangaka Marker Set – 3 tip sizes. these were a very welcome suprise as I use these type of detailer pens a lot. and this set has 3 tip sizes… so I will definitely be playing with these.
  • Another surprise in my packet was this Twin Black tips set – if you ever saw the Memory system kit I have… these are the same tips selection..but all black. Scroll, brush, fine, writer, calligraphy and chisel.  Each pen has two tips..either two of the same in 2 sizes, or 2 different tips. Definitley a welcome surprise for someone like me who likess to draw and write on the Cricut.  these have  definitley been  the better pens as far as durability goes for that purpose as the tips don’t seem to be affected at all, unlike other pens I have used on it.
  • Then we have one of my favorites…if you ever saw my post on embossing pens you have seen one of these. When I got mine I could only get my hands on a dual tip fine & chisel pen… so this time I ordered the writer as it has two sizes of writing tips.  What I love about these and a lot of the Zig pens is that they work perfectly with my Amy Chomas Pen & Marker Adapters and are awesome for embossing on my Cricut.  ImageAbility decided I needed to brush up on my hand writing skills I think because Steve kindly upgraded me to include the full set of Zig Embossing Pens.  The full set includes the writing tips, the calligraphy tips as well as the fine and chisel and the scroll and brush tips.  I guess I best get practicing LOL
  • Black Fabricolor twin tip Pen

Now I couldn’t place an order without  grabbing some Photo Tape Refills.. I LOVE this tape runner.  My Xyron Megarunner is fabulous for most paper craft projects, but I find this Zig Photo Tape to just have a little extra something, something for things like the foam sheets… and regulars know I love to pop my foam sheets on a lot of projects.

….also included in this image is a couple of different sizes of the 2 way glue.  I have the big applicator tip, but wanted to try out some of the smaller tips  too.

And something that has me very excited…. double sided tape.  Steve kindly threw in a reel of the commercial grade tape they use in another branch of the business after listening to me moan about wanting a really heavy duty tape for my foam  and needing something that came in wide reels.  It’s always handy to know a man who knows a man …. so I will be testing this out too.  I threw a quick 1 inch strip on a piece of card and foam and so far, as I can tell… I could probably stick myself off the ceiling with this stuff lol.  I need wide tape in big quantities at an affordable price… so 3 sheet packs just don’t cut it for me.  I have one other  reel I just ordered and should be here by Monday… I picked it up at a discount online and  it’s 6 inches wide.

It will be interesting to see how they compare since one is marketed for commercial use and one is marketed for craft use.  My biggest pet peeve is I really want it to  have release paper on both sides… but I guess I can always add my own secondary release paper to these rolls.  Stay tuned for updates on these tape reels later in the month if you have been looking for similar products.zig_adhesive
Then  I found the extra goodies I wasn’t expecting.. I found a canvas tote bag, which is perfect for the Fabricolor pen I ordered. And something   that had been mentioned in a recent email and was definitely of interest to me…. a ChalkFlex sheet and white wet erasable chalk marker.  Now this is a bit different to the original chalkboard vinyl I reviewed last year and have used in various projects since… this one isn’t black.  It’s a really deep slate gray and has a subtle texture to it.  Really looking forward to trying that one out.

zig_extras

almost forgot to include this one…. this is one of the wet erasable Chalk Pens, to go with the chalk board sheet.

zig-_chalk

….and there we have it… that is today’s happy mail from CraftingAbility.com and Cohas.com  ..time to get busy and have some playtime me thinks.  Stay tuned for more posts and projects and a closer look at some of these new pens in action.

Some products in this post were provided free of charge for review & project purposes.

Cute manga style magnet

I was playing around with my magnetic sheet from CraftingAbility again…  this one was die cut using a dual stitched set. Only the frame is magnetic, keeping it lightweight and economical.  I used the center portion on another project which I posted a few days ago. You may have read about the possibility of grab bags coming available… and this would be perfect for these kind of projects.

She may end up being another “abandoned art” project… we shall see 🙂

Zig Kurecolor Giveaway Winner Announcement

and the lucky winner of the Zig Kurecolor Skintone 12 pack giveaway ….

Congratulations Janey G.

I shall email you later today to get  shipping details from you. 🙂

kurecolor_flesh_details

I am  sure I am not the only one  wishing they were winging their way to my address  lol.   I just  found out this particular set is out of stock at the factory…. eek! If anyone is interested I will post an update when these will be  in stock again. See I told you these pens were good lol.

Zig Kurecolor Alcohol Markers & Giveaway

It seems to come up a lot lately in some of the cardmaking and coloring groups I am in on Facebook… lots of people are trying out the  Zig Clean Color Markers, but few know about the Zig Kurecolor set.  Since I am a huge fan of the Zig Kurecolor markers I have, I thought I would share this info for anyone who might be interested.

I had been struggling to find a skin tone  that suited my style and budget when I ran across these on the CraftingAbility website. I already had the set of Memory System Markers and loved the tips on those… so when I saw that Zig had alcohol markers with the same  fine tip, I grabbed some to try.

The brush tip on the  Zig Kurecolors isn’t like most brush tips I have tried, it’s a bit fatter, rounder and and not so stiff and I love it.  Add in the fab fine tip and … the fact I finally FINALLY found my color. SOLD !!!!

Kurecolor_fine_brush_Dual_Tip_CNKC2200_731_pale_beige_details
I am not a huge fan of pinky/orange faces… it reminds me too much of girls who can’t find the right foundation makeup.  Just personal preference, each to their own.  I picked up 3 pens to try and get a good skin combo and  the one I  absolutely can’t live without … Pale Beige #731.

kurecolor_test

Image – KennyK Stamps

Now Zig do two types of Zig Kurecolor….refillables, much like the Copic, Spectrum etc… and one that is not marketed as refillable.. but TOTALLY is and really would be another great selling point if they were marketed as such.  The pens are slimline, so won’t hold as much ink as the ones marketed as refillable.. but they are super quick and easy to fill, so I am not worried about that at all.

No replacement tips for these ones.. since they aren’t marketed as refillable, however that is not to say that the replacement tips wouldn’t work in these, I just haven’t had any to try… but you know I will  give it a shot when I do lol.  But they do come with my two favorite tips and so far, I have had no need to replace them anyway and I am not the most delicate of people when it comes to markers.

Zig seem to have very durable tips that have held up to my scribbling and Cricut Explore perfectly.  They also play nicely with other alcohol markers I have and I am definitely one to mix and match my pens.  So if you have other alcohol pens, but just can’t find the right skintones for your tastes, or feel like you are missing some colors you would like.. or you really just need different tips..check these out.

Me, as soon as I can, I’ll be  buying every single one of them lol.  I just have to decide between the dual tip refillables and these Manga pens I currently have…and really like.

425-kc1100_tips

52-kc3000

The Refillable version comes in two versions of dual tip.. the twin and twin ‘s’ .   I believe all Kurecolors come in the entire color range, but don’t quote me on that.

The Twin pens ( twin and twin’s’ ) also have replacement tips which can be purchases in packs of 10.  Please check the details on these as not all tips can be used on both pens .  I’m hoping to get my hands on some of these myself soon to try, and if and when I do… I’ll be sure to let you all know.  One of these, not sure which model yet, will be available on special order for anyone interested..( 10 days or less) I’ll let you all know as soon as they are listed, or you can sign up for their newsletter. Because I’ll be grabbing some myself to play with 🙂

308-kc_inks

and then of course there are the refills… 25ml in whatever colors  you need.  If you fall in love with the 731 like I did, I highly recommend you buy these in multiples ..lol I can tell you it’s hell when you run out and have to wait for refills.  I have 3 now and happy as a clam. I am soo not running out of that color again lol. Refills come in single color, or sets ..I believe it’s sets of 10, or 12 to correspond with the pen sets.

The color range is not as vast as Copic, but with 136 pens in the range ( 135 colors and a blender pen),  plus tip blending capabilities….there is more than enough color variety for most peoples needs …and budgets.   I just got my mits on a set of the Hair and muted tones manga pens… so  expect to see projects  and a review of those soon too.

I think I read somewhere that these inks are also suitable for paint guns.. so I’ll be giving that a shot too. I know my other alcohol inks worked in it.

Kuretake Photo Tape…. I’m in LOVE..Foamtastic !!!

Some of you may recall previous posts/facebook conversations where I expressed my frustration at finding an affordable solution to my foam padding issue.  I like to use it in sheets as opposed to dots etc.  I find  using it on larger areas behind an image, provides more support and a really nice feel.

Wet glues.. too wet… large areas=wet warp ….ugg, my other tape runner…  love it… but not strong enough for the foam.  But NOW…. I think I found one solution, well …. technically….it found me…. Kuretake  Photo Tape.

Tape_DispenserTape_Cartridge
I got this sent to me to play around with by my friends at ImageAbility.  Over the months we’ve discussed various crafting frustrations I have, they have a  wide selection of products through the various departments…  and I’m crazy enough to find a solution where it wasn’t intended lol.   I’m not sure he had this particular issue in mind when he sent it… but I am sooo glad he did.

At first glance I thought this was going to be another one of those 3 swipes you are out kinda little tape runners.   But on closer inspection… it  has as much tape as my big Mega Runner ….  32 meters (about 105 feet!) of 10mm wide tape.

The Kuretake Photo Tape dispenser is one of the small “in your hand” variety, but don’t be fooled… it’s got staying power.

I was convinced when I saw it that it would be just as hard to get it to work on foam as everything else I have tried… but I guess either the mesh design makes a difference, or the tape is stronger than I am used to.  I did a test piece when I first got it and  it’s stuck on their real good.

If you have been struggling with specific papers, card or  materials… and  your everyday tape runners just aren’t cutting it…. you might want to give this a look see.

... don’t forget to  grab your codes below.

KuretakeAlso  in my latest box of goodies..and I will go into more detail over the next couple of days as I get to play with them all….

  • Kuretake Zig Kurecolor Hair and Muted tones 12 pack ( I can already tell you … LOVE THESE !!! )
  • Kuretake Gansai Tambi Starry Colors, the new 6 pack of pearlescent /metallic water colors…. dying to try those !!!

Gansai Tambi Watercolor Paints

gansai_tambi_box

Gansai Tambi Watercolor set

Well… It’s been a rather expensive month all round really… between craft supplies and server/website upgrade costs. But  boy did I get a tonne of  fun new stuff.  Really…. I have soo much new stuff to play with this winter, I might never leave the house till spring haha

You may, or may not have read the post I did a while back about dry inking.  I’m not a hand colorer, so when I discovered this technique by accident… I had a lot of  fun with it.  But ink pads are a bit limiting and killer on your brushes… luckily I had a set that I got 50% off at Michaels for me and the little guy to use, they are built tough enough to withstand a toddler….and dry inking!

Gansai Tambi Watercolor set 24 count

Gansai Tambi Watercolor set 24 count

But I wanted to try something else and when I came across this set of Gansai Tambi watercolors  I was like OOOHHHH !!  Now you can probably tell from  previous posts, I’m a stuck in the mud digital colorer ….determined to bust out and try new things.  I haven’t really done any painting since I was in school…and even then I was awful at it.  I think that is why my artistic nature sprouted out into photography.

But here I am at the grand old age of 45…  trying all sorts of new crafting things I never thought I would attempt.  Don’t ever let anyone tell you you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.. These were very reasonably prices and even more so with the discount code available on ZigManga.com

I originally bought my Cricut Explore to make custom photo mats… thus far I have made one LOL

Then I got hooked into card making by the ladies on the message board… and oh dear.. let’s just say that was not attractive.  But under their guidance and wisdom, my card making has improved dramatically and I am ready to  break out and experiment.   Of course when the old Cricut Forum closed down and I offered to make us a new home, I had no idea where this was going to go.  But I seem to be wearing my old webmistress hat again… I guess fashion really does rotate… even virtual fashion LOL.

watercolor1

First attempt at Watercolors with rubber stamps ….on an old envleope

So while the server was dying and I was on the phone for hours and hours with tech support… I grabbed a pot of water and started playing, bear in mind I am NOT an artist and this was about 5 am and I had been up all night… but I have to say.. I like these paints a lot.  With winter coming this is definitely going to be something I use a lot in the evening to relax and hopefully It won’t take too long before I have reasonably cool projects to share.

These are considered professional water colors… so perhaps I should have started off with a beginner set.. but when have I ever been conventional.

watercolor2

Second attempt at Watercoloring with Gansai Tambi on 110lb card stock using a rubber stamp for design

One of the things I love about these paints is you can manipulate this media to suit your own tastes.  To me watercolor has always been a bit ….’wishy washy, for want of a better description.

Far too subtle for someone like me LOL,  but I noticed that when your mix is more paint than water, at least with this set…. you get strong vibrant colors with a slight sheen to them, which I like a lot.

I really do need to work on my subtlety though….so I am sure  by next year and some winter painting practise, lots of youtube videos and just goofing around… some of my watercolor painting will end up in the card challenges over on the message board.

So here we are, almost ready for another new year and boy do I have some fun stuff  to play with and share… November was a crazy shopping month for me and the little guy, so get ready for some fun projects.

I must let my niece know about these, she does beautiful watercolors. I have no idea where she got that from, must be her dads side of the family LOL

I love the box on these… I was expecting the old tin style paint box for some reason. If you bought this as a gift, you wouldn’t even need to wrap it, just throw a matching ribbon around it and tag this baby and you are done. Beautifully presented !

Manga Artists .. Zig Manga Art supplies 20% coupon

Now let me be clear, I am not a Manga Artist .. I can barely draw a stick figure.

But I do have some old friends from my Deviant Art days that  are… one in Particular who I miss  dearly and would love to get back in touch with. Reckless… if one day you discover this post… miss ya lil bro xxxx Wipz

When I saw these  advertised on the side of one of my  favorite sites winkofstella.com  I had to go take a look.  These look pretty cool,  so all you manga Artists check this out and don’t forget to use the 20% coupon  if you shop.

They have pens and  inks and  some starter kits for someone new to Manga Art.

  • The starter sets have
  • 10 Kurecolor markers, with two tips
  • 2 Mangaka pens for outlines and details
  • step-by-step instructions, and a practice drawingKurecolor markers contain an alcohol-based dye that is permanent after drying and won’t smudge or smear Mangaka pens

What they also have that I personally am very interested in  trying, not for Manga Art .. but for coloring my Stamps….is this set of Gansai Tambi watercolor paints. These are traditional Japanese watercolors for professional artists and crafters.  I’ll be adding these to my  wish list for sure.  Up until now I have been coloring my stamps with  ink pads and brushes.. but I really want to try a proper set of water color paints.
