Mommy’s weekly specials! Menu for my picky eater

I was having fun playing with my Cohas adhesive Vinyl chalkboard again and made a sign to hang up outside of my kitchen.  My lil guy can be a fussy eater, so I thought I would make him a fun  menu so he could help meal plan.  This is just a flat canvas panel, covered in chalkboard vinyl and a couple of strips of ribbon… and I added  Beer and Barbeque Lady Digital Stamp,   but colored the bottle to look like Ketchup.  The image is colored with Zig Kurecolor markers.

Take a minute to stop and smell the.. daisies?

I love this image pretty-flower-girl by Bugaboo Stamps, so it was a no brainer when it came to choosing a DT image for this months Bugaboo Crafty challenge.  It’s a super simple, sweet image which I colored with Chameleon Pens and then cropped with one of my new In and Out dies by Gina Marie Designs Double Pierced In and Out Rectangle die set

The card background was done  with a stamp I had that matched the daisy in the image on a A2 card from a Michaels value pack. Of course I used my trusty Zig Photo Tape runner to attach it…
If you like the look of this die, check out my previous posts  on the front page showing off the fun Bonus cuts you can use to make some really cool frames.  If you are reading this post months down the road.. do a search for Gina Marie Designs and that should pull them up… or search the March 2017 archive.

Did you know CraftsUPrint have digi’s too.. who knew !!

I had seen one or two of them before..but didn’t realize just how many they have.

There is one artist in particular who has some real fun images.  I grabbed a bunch and had a little coloring fun last night. These were print and cut on the Cricut Explore on 110lb card, the colored with various pens…. Chameleon Pens, Zig Kurecolor and some new detailer pens I grabbed to try by Sargent Arts & Sharpie.

I made these up into a couple of cards and a frame for one of my small watercolored stamps I got from LDRS Creatives this past week… lots of fun designs so if you are looking for some character Digi’s and haven’t found what you were looking for, check them out.  The artist is Gordon Fraser and you can find his gallery here Gordon Fraser – CraftsUPrint Designer.

I have a bunch more of these fun digi’s  to get colored up… so expect to see more from this artist in the coming month.

Metal framed chalkboard sign…Cheers Easy!

This is one project that definitely won’t be going in the Abandoned Art box…  I’ll be hanging this one above my craft desk.  Not because it is a fantastic project.. but because it has sentimental value!  Cheers Easy is something my brother used to say.  Steve at Crafting Ability sent me a sample of the new Slate chalkboard vinyl to play with and I had been sitting on it waiting for the right project to come along.  It’s like the original Black Chalkboard vinyl that you can find on Cohas.com ( formerly known as Ziggyboard which you may have seen on various projects on the blog ).. but this one is a deep rich gray color and has a slight sating texture to it….and I am loving it.

The Cohas chalk vinyls cuts like a dream, clean up really nice and easy, so fabulous for signage which needs to be updated… but it’s also great for people like me who  can’t do cursive or fancy writing.  This particular one is just done with rubber stamps and chalk paint, but  you may have seen in previous posts where I have run this vinyl through my Cricut Explore and  written and drawn on it using Gelly Roll Pens, chalk pens and such.

Anyway… the ArtMinds metal plaque was a clearance item at one of my local Michaels.. under $3, I buffed the ornate edges with a DecorArt metallic Lustre Wax called “Black Shimmer” also on clearance at the same store…. that was $3.99 a pot and I picked up 6 pots in various colors.  Cut to size a piece of the Slate Chalkboard vinyl and applied that

… then popped on one of my favorite KennyK images from last year “Old time Bartender”. He is colored with a mix of Chameleon Pens, Zig Kurecolor and Tim Holtz distress pens by Ranger.  I did him as a Print & cut on my Cricut Explore. with the intention of making him a 3D decoupage image.. but decided to go with a single layer in the end.

Fun quick little project  for anyone needing customizable signage..or just a fun piece of wall decor.

“A little Tutti Frutti” humorous Valentines card

I’ve been wanting to color this one for a while, but was waiting for the right moment to hit…  I am a creature of mood, so an image has to “speak to me” for me to really get into creating with it. Sometimes it is instant and I know the second I see it exactly what I need to do with it… specially those ones that tickle my bad sense of humor.  Others I have to let them grow on me and I bounce ideas around and then it hits me…

This was one of those projects.  I had the main image and the fun paper  done and sat waiting for  the finishing touches.. when it hit me.  I was just gonna have to write me a poem  LOL.   I hope you like it.

This is my DT project for the February 2017 Crafty Awesomeness Challenge and was created with an image from Cute As A Button, who is the February Sponsor.  Come on over and join in and share your projects.

This is IMG00221 Chiquita by Cute As A Button she was print and cut on the Cricut Explore and colored with a mix of Zig Kurecolor and Chameleon Pens. I popped some Glossy Accents on  the grapes and necklace for a subtle 3D feel.  The patterned paper is one I found on Etsy by AT Art Digital and you may have seen my “Do you digital?” post last week or two about these.

I printed this on my Epson Eco Tank, and then trimmed that down with my wavy blade on my cutter.  I added a black layer behind for impact which also has a wavy edge and then mounted it all on a card base cut from a Craft Smith paper pad using Zig Photo Tape.  The Pineapple was one of the Michaels $1.50 stamps and I stamped, hand cut and colored that. Sentiment die, I think was  a cheapie import???  cut on my Sizzix Big SHot

and the poem.. yup….  the poem…. that was all me…. sorry, having a “moment”  LOL.

Let’s face it.. not every girls is flowers and hearts.  I’ll take a good laugh over a bunch of flowers any day of the week.

Love this image, reminds me of Carmen Miranda…. yup… I know..showing my age again lol.

Hope you like it  🙂

Bugaboo Sketch Challenge inspired notebook

I was cruising along doing my thing when I ran across the  new Bugaboo Stamps latest “Stella Says Sketch Challenge”.  Now I am not a huge fan of sketch challenges..I like to do my own thing.. but once in a while a sketch will catch my eye and I’m like

“hmm.. yup..I can work with that! “

….and this  was one of them.  This is the Sketch for Challenge 502 which runs till February 6th.  Now I am kind of used to our sketch challenge on the message board..which is VERY relaxed as far as “rules goes”  and very open to artistic license. They are an inspiration/ suggestion not an absolute LOL.. so everyone is used to me skipping  the sentiments section on my cards and projects.

Sometimes they just don’t need one, other times I want to leave it  till I know who the recipient is… or let’s face it.. it’s me!! Sometimes it’s just not something I should probably post pictures of for the masses lol.
In this case, it just doesn’t need one… it’s a notebook, not a card.  I just wanted to have some fun with these Bugaboo Stamps I have in my collection and practice  blending techniques with my Chameleon Pens.  I will enter it any way, just to show it off for anyone who cares to  check it out…and to show a bit of support for one of our Sponsors Challenges.
Anywho here is my fun little notebook, made from scratch using a Fellowes Comb Binder and Plastic Combs.  The images used are Hedgehog Flower and Mini Set- Spring Flower Blocks which is a set of 6.  Colored with Chameleon Pens on Canson Mix Media the notebook was made using Recollections card for the cover and the inside pages.

I was considering laminating the covers, but decided against it.  The center panel was layers of black & white matching card stock and I used Zig Kuretake Photo Tape Runner for my adhesive. and the  Hedgehog was also printed on white, then colored and Die cut using one of my newer Gina Marie Designs Dies “MINI HEART LACE SQUARE DIE SET”

This one  may or may not join my abandoned art project bucket… it’s kinda cute and I may keep it.

Be sure to enter your Bugaboo Stamps Projects in their Challenges..at “Catch the Bug Challenge Spot”

and of course our brand new one that started this month “Bugaboo Crafty Challenge”.  It’s a monthly prize challenge that starts on the 15th of each month for Bugaboo Stamp projects

.. and then of course you can also enter it in the “Crafty Awesomeness Challenge” here on the blog too, which is an anything goes and starts on the 1st of each month.

KennyK and my ‘AHA moment’

Now I know there are a few of you who  already started humming  “Take on me”  ….even if only in your head.  Admit it, you know the song and  you secretly wished some hot guy would drag you off  into the pages of a  magazine.. or hot steamy romance book.

* whistles innocently.

Or if you are one of  our male crafters.. maybe you want to be him instead and drag some cute chick off to woo with your sketchings. but that just sounds like the weird dude at the park… so … let’s not go there lol.

Well…  here we are 30 years later.. and we’re not watching those sketchy scenes anymore. Most of us are either drawing them, or coloring them.  I have to say, Morton Harket still looks pretty damned hot… I saw some recent pics and he scrubs up pretty good LOL.

Anywho, I digress… back to the project

and what a project this one was! as you can probably tell it’s inspired by…. AHA …. yup I had my AHA moment.   Now  this one was a doozy;  it was quite a process just to get to this stage and I have a feeling by the time I finish matting and framing this guy, there is gonna be a second white mat  with some comic strip style layout  surrounding him and his black mat board.  I guess we shall see…. one day.

I’ll show  more details below.. but the quick run through on this one…

Canson Mixed Media Paper, colored with Chameleons, over color with Crayola Color Escapes Pencils… scanned, reprinted, background depth using a  black Zig Scroll & Brush pen.. additional shading and outline definition  done with a charcoal gray Color Escapes… signed .. matted.. BINGO

I find it useful to take progress pics as I work, so I can sit back and look at them  on my comp as I drink my tea and take a break.  For some reason it really helps me look at it with a more critical eye  and helps me spot areas I may need to work on, better than looking at the actual project.  It also gives me a more accurate view of projects that are meant to be viewed at a distance…. like  framed art etc.  When I get up and walk off to do something…. I find propping up my work and leaving it in full view  for a few hours, or days helps when I feel I am just not quite seeing the problem…. but I know it’s just not quite right.

I have a tendency to ruin  projects by not knowing when to stop “trying” *sigh…. so I try and give myself breaks at strategic points, to  avoid that happening so often.

What I really love about this particular project, is that the various stages of progression gave me some ideas  on other  things I wanted to try with this concept.  One of them being a version with only the skin colored in markers and pencil and the rest black and white/graycale.  I think that one will look really cool.

Anyway enough of my ramblings, let’s face it…..I just like to goof around and try things. Some work, some don’t….sometimes they all work for you… for different reasons and you have to decide which one to go with first. The only thing that matters is having fun and trying new things and NOT trying to compete with other crafters and constantly comparing your work to others. when it  comes to art and creativity…. the rule is

…. THERE ARE NO RULES !!

….so here are the progress snapshots and the final  project  matted and ready to frame…or maybe double matted THEN framed later lol…and some product links for anyone interested.

I printed light by adjusting the layer opacity in my graphics program on Canson Mix Media paper and then colored with Chameleon skin tone marker NU00.  I know I know.. one shouldn’t color with markers on papers designed for  other media…. but I have refills …and I can, because I want to …. I am such a rebel !!!   LOL remember THERE ARE NO RULES!!

I would be lying if I said I recall exactly what colors I used at this stage.  I know the blue for the pants was BL4 Cornflower Blue.. but I used a mix of grays  for the hat, leather straps and chaps.  One of which I am pretty sure was  the CG8  Cool Gray from the original 22 pen set  and the others  came from the gray tones  5 pack.  Background was sketched in with pencil.

I tried detailing the outline with a fab new pen I got just before Christmas, it’s called a Bimoji Marker and this is the fine tip one… and I really like the look of it on  the test piece on the right.  Comp crashed and I got a print fail… so decided to use it as a test sheet.  but it wasn’t quite gellin with what I had in my head for this particular piece.  But this is definitely something I am going to  use on another project, I love this sketchy look with impact.

In the end I compromised and did the detailing and outlines with a charcoal gray pencil. because I printed this as a soft print with light lines, It  needed to be brought out in the coloring instead.  This is the first time I have really tried the no outlines /soft outlines style… and I actually like it… for SOME projects.  I think it really depends on the individual project and images as to whether pen, or pencil works best.

One last quick note… since I obscured the background with this sketchy AHA inspired  look, don’t forget to add your artists signature back in somewhere on your piece.  Mine is tucked up under the mat, but will also be added to the back on a label with details.  Since this piece may well end up as an Abandoned Art Project at some point, I want to make sure credit is assigned to  the artist… the one and only KennyK.

………. and so, here he is “Tex” by KennyK

This is one of my mystery DT projects from the January 2017 Crafty Awesomeness Challenge which you are more than welcome to come enter.

Laminated Bookmark for Abandonment

We ran out to the store last night to pick up a few things for the little guy and right next to it is a Panera Bread. We’ve never been in one before; but Grandma gave hubby some Gift cards at Christmas, so we figured we would give it a  try. The Broccoli Cheddar  soup was awesome, sandwiches were great … hubby loved the Cinnamon Rolls and lil man gave the Fudge Brownie a BIG thumbs up.

It kind of reminded me of the restaurants and coffee shops we would frequent back in Silicon Valley….very relaxed and a place people come to hang out, read, chat and do homework. So, that inspired this next project…I am going to abandon some pieces here next time we go as part of our Abandoned Art missions.

Here is my January Inspiration for the Cute As A button Inspiration Show case, featuring “IMG00284 Nothing Like A Good Book”  I used my own Sentiment for this project.

She is colored with Chameleon Pens, I added the black digital borders before printing her out. I added a blue panel behind  and then ran it through my laminator and trimmed it up. I punched  a hole and threaded some cute ribbon through it.  Very quick project  for the book lovers.

If you don’t have a laminator, they also sell self sealing laminating pouches.
