Adventures in Resin

Some of you may have heard me mention earlier in the year that I had wanted to get some more embedding resin, I haven’t had any in years and its a fun thing to do.  Well I got some a few months back and  we had a quick play with it just to get a refresher for mommy  and make sure I had molds that would work  and a good mix ratio.

Well instead of buying specific embedding resin molds, I decided to have a play with some of the silicon baking and confectionery molds. I thought they might be easier for the little guy to unload than the traditional stiff molds… plus if I am honest I have had my eye on molds from one of my affiliates Marvelous Molds for a while… and for this purpose too lol. Even though they are technically designed for cake decorators, they do work for other crafts…. so I figured if the cheap ones worked… these fancy molds  from Marvelous molds are sure to work.  If you missed my previous post about these molds, you can find it here Marvelous Molds – cake decor, polymer, plaster and more .  I stumbled across this one day when I was doing updated links and had to  sign up, they have such fab designs and these molds will work for so many different craft materials… not just cake making.

300 X 250px
I had forgotten how much fun embedding resin can be… we decided to start  off simple so me and  lil Man D  mixed up a batch… I say we..when I really mean me.  He got to choose the  stuff that went in it though…  and we ended up with some Oceanic type glitter.  It’s very hard to photograph… but looks really cool.. think mermaids..or fishies.

And we picked out one of the molds… yeah can you tell who picked this one?  lol.  It’s a really cool little jigsaw puzzle mold which I think we will be using quite a lot.  Wait till you see all the other fun silicon  molds we have waiting to get played with… it’s going to be so much fun seeing what the little guy comes up with as far as ideas on objects to embed.

If you have never tried embedding resin, it’s definitely something to add to  your list.  My personal preference is resin from a company in Cali, called Tap Plastics. But if you just want to get something NOW and have a play, you can also find embedding resin and the necessary Catalyst.. I say NECESSARY as sometimes people do not realize you have to buy a catalyst too…at Michaels as well as some very affordable silicon molds in the cake and candy making section.

anywho… just a quick teaser of things to come .. Here are our glitzy Jigsaw shapes that will be getting turned into key rings and such and sent out or abandoned as part of our abandoned art  projects.

I got really lucky a while back and found something in clearance at Michaels that made my day.. would you believe I found a silicon mold for making ..BANGLES.  Can’t wait to try that one out with the little guy too.

I also spotted this one online, but haven’t found it in store yet so I may have to order this one for him.  My son is a huge Lego fan, so this would be great for our resin and plaster projects.

…and we did grab a  set of these square molds too.. a large 6 mold set with 3 inch squares and a set of 12 1.5 inch squares.

To be honest there were so many cool molds and even though they were on offer, we had to be good.   So the lil man picked out the ones he wanted and mommy will get the ones she wants later.

Now we just have to decide what to put in them… sadly I don’t have what I really wanted to use any more.  Last time I played with resin I had a brand of shrinky dink that if baked just right and you caught it before it bonded together… the top surface would separate from the base leaving this clear printed layer and it was perfect for embedding printed designs seamlessly.  The shrinky dink I have now is different.  But I have other ideas to experiment with  that I didn’t get to try last time I had resin… so I am not going to be  short of fun things to try with the lil man.

Between the huge plaster of paris bucket and the embedding resin and all these fun molds.. I think the lil man and I will have plenty of fun projects ahead.  He just started to experiment with mix media projects… and this is perfect for those and all the fun Steampunk projects I like to do… so many possibilities!! so many unique embellishments to be had!

Beauty and the … Stick Bot???

This was my challenge image over at Cute As A Button’s Progressive Challenge for March…. I was running late after a fun month of craziness and then my 5 year old decided that my picture was lacking a little something something.. enter the stick bot.  Apparently he thinks that we needed a Stick bot in it.. so here she is .. this is Flamenco Dancer and Stickbot.

You can find Flamenco Dancer in the Cute As A Button store This was done on Canson Mix Media with  Gansia Tambi watercolors and a touch of Crayola Color Escapes pencil. I added a double layer photo mat  and she’ll most likely wing her way into the Abandoned Art bucket we are filling up for our great adventure next month.

Easy Chalkboard Vinyl humorous signs

I needed a break from cleaning up and had a play with some fun signs.. nothing major, just some fun signs with some fun images. I popped a square piece of Cohas Adhesive Chalkboard Vinyl onto an 8×8 wood canvas/blank and added some of the fun images I got from CraftsUPrint designer Gordon Fraser.  These were watercolored using Gansai Tambi paints  and H2o brushes on Canson Mix Media Paper.

It’s really easy to  swap images in and out…. if you don’t want to keep a permanent image on it, just use a 2 way temporary bond glue.  Great way to make motivational signs for yourself, or other family members.  I just  wrote on mine with blue and white Zig wet wipe Chalk Markers, which cleans right off with a wet rag. You could of course use a more permanent pen which they also  make, that comes off with window cleaner.  I deliberately didn’t prime my chalk pens, to keep it more  rustic and not so intense.

This vinyl comes in 12×12 sheets, or pre-cut labels in various shapes.  I like the 12×12 sheets  because I can cut this on my Cricut Explore if I want something a bit fancy and also write on it on my Cricut.. because let’s face it, my handwriting sucks haha…. or pop it in a 12×12 Scrapbook page frame if I want something bigger.  I have the labels too and they are awesome for  labeling jars etc with my lil man as gifts.. lots of fun shapes.

When I want a more permanent sign, I confess I usually  run it through my Cricut first to add the text..

The lil guy is getting in more craft projects than I am this past week lol…  here is a card I helped him put together for his grandparents who sent him a card and Toys R Us gift certificate for his 5th birthday, which is on Thursday.

Guest Designer – Lil’ Man D ( 4yrs old ) laminated bookmarks

We had to go get new tires the other day and my lil guy.. much as he loves the dealership and checking out all of the cars and trucks..specially the trucks ( he is just like his daddy when it comes to trucks lol ) .. he gets bored after a while.  So this time I decided to take along my portable easel box I showed you in a previous post earlier this week and watercolors  in case they came in handy… plus it was a great way to test it out and see how well it worked out.

They have a seating area with comfy chairs, but also a large eating area with vending machines and coffee etc and part of that is a long bar area with bar stools…and lots of natural light from the big windows.  So we sat down  with some snacks and drinks and I started to color.. lol.. 2 seconds later as predicted “I want to color please mommy”

So here we go, these are 4 of the bookmarks he painted while we were waiting for our new tires.  I had already stamped everything out  on precut  strips of Canson Mix Media Paper and they were in the easel box ready to go with the H2o pen.  The easel box and the Gansai Tambi box are about the same size so easy to grab and go even without a bag.
I love this first Giraffe because he told me he was painting a rainbow on it too ..  I love his imagination, but I am sure glad he explains what some of it is sometimes haha.  Some of these will go to friends and relatives and others will go in the Abandoned Art box.  The Giraffe is a stamp we picked up at Michaels last month.  The father and daughter image is a Unity Stamp co stamp  that I stamped up for me to color, but he hijacked it haha

The finished pieces were mounted on some plain Recollections 65lb card stock and then laminated and a hole punched for them.  A little bit of ribbon and some beads and they will be all ready to go 🙂

This portable easel with storage is great .. he loved it so much he asked for one of his own so he could bring his pens along next time too.  These boxes are small enough and light enough for a kid to easily carry around and if required .. you could easy pop on a carry handle or strap. Once his is finished,  he will be able to decorate it as he wishes. He loves to paint wooden blanks and boxes,  so I know whatever it is…. it will be UNIQUE  haha

“Poppy Fairy” Matted art in Pencil

This one was a  lot of work, but I love how she turned out.  She was printed on a 9×12 piece of Canson Mixed Media Paper and colored with Crayola Color Escapes, the  new “Grown up Crayolas” as I like to call them.   She is part of the New Release collection for March over at Cute As A Button this month.  I added a black photo mat to this and will frame it  and gift it to someone.

Go check out all the fun new images and don’t forget to pop on over and check out the Inspiration Blog & Facebook Group for new challenges 🙂

Vintage portrait style watercolored magnet

Well.. what a mix of goodies ended up in this project… I think everything but the kitchen sink lol

This is a new magnet framed with the Gina Marie Designs combo die piece you saw in a post earlier today…  looks a bit different now though LOL.  It had a few layers of Tim Holtz distress ink, followed by two colors of DecoArt Metallic Lustre, a touch more distress ink…. then 3 layers of clear embossing powder.

The image is “Lavish” by Rick St Dennis, which is one of 3 new ones in this style that I picked up last night.  She is printed on Canson Mix Media 9×12icon and colored with Gansai Tambi Watercolors using an H2o Brush.  I mounted the image to a piece of  COHAS magnet using a commercial grade double sided adhesive tape and then attached the frame with Zig 2 Way Glue.

This one will be joined by the other two images who will be turned into magnets too and will be joining my Abandoned Art bucket and abandoned in the coming months.  If you want to lean more about abandoned Art there are links to several Facebook groups on the side of this blog.  It’s all about sharing the happy!

Who doesn’t love a baby elephant?

Here is card No.1 of 2 for the newest Crafty Awesomeness Challenge which is sponsored by.. Sasayaki Glitter this month. The team got to choose two images.. so being a team of 4 .. we let two of the girls pick an image this month and the other two will choose next time. We’ve been friends so long now, that we know each other well enough to know what images we can all work with.. and which ones we can  choose to give the others a  nudge outside the box..without going too  far… * cough haha that would be me LOL

So here she is… I say she, simply because I gave her pink toe nails and a pink bow.  I have plans to make a  few more of these in blue and gender neutral colors too, it’s just such a cute image and perfect for baby showers, 1st birthdays, gender reveals, announcements etc.

This is Baby Elly’s Birthday by Sasayaki Glitter
Printed on an Epson Ecotank on Canson Mix Media  paper
Colored with  Crayola Color Escapes pencils and blended with Isopropyl alcohol.
The image was then cut with a Gina Marie Designs Die from the “LACEY LATTICE RECTANGLE DIE SET”  on the Sizzix Big Shot ( check out my post about this set &  the crafters toothbrush here )
Attached with Zig Kuretake Photo Tape

A very soft and cutesie CAS (clean and Simple)card….

Guest Designer – Lil ‘ Man D – Thank You card and Bookmark

You may have seen  my posts on Facebook last week about my lil man and his first watercolor project…. well he was at it again tonight  🙂

My little man was given an early birthday present last weekend by a lady who works with hubby, so this is her Thank You card and a little book mark for her to use in her Bible, or other reading matter.  Now it goes without saying, since he is only 4 …. that he had a little help …SURPRISE !! lol.  But the painting is all him.

He may be a crafty wee soul, but  this mommy isn’t ready to let him lose  with a laminator and glue all by himself .. my sanity is questionable at the best of times .. but not THAT bad haha.  Unlike someone we won’t mention by name who’s grandson glued himself up trying to apply “lotion” to his legs whilst visiting her craft room last week lol…. sorry.. I am still giggling over that one .. my bad.

The images he colored are :

Image #13 – Heart Ants – by Sasayaki Glitter & a section cropped from Pure Prairie Bouquet by Power Poppy.

The card and bookmark were colored using Gansai Tambi watercolors and a Zig Kuretake H2o brush.

The card  is a hot pink 5×6.5″ from a multicolor pack at Michaels
A background layer of rough cut 65lb black Recollections card from the value packs
The image is printed on Canson Mix Media Paper on my Epson Eco Tank and also had a rough cut edging. I added the sentiment “There is beauty in creation” and a border to the image before printing.  This was also foam popped on a Darice adhesive foam sheet and attached using a double side tape. The card layers were  attached with Zig Photo Tape and the Sentiment which was a cheapie import die was attached with Tombow Aqua.

The Book mark is backed with a light tan 65lb card  with a hint of a border showing behind the image cut from the front, and I attached a tassle from a value pack at Michaels. I added a cute little bead  that I got  in a happy mail package from Francesca at Cute As A Button when she very kindly shared her destash items with the DT team 🙂  It says “Always” on one side and “Believe” on the other… pretty appropriate for a Bible Bookmark.

I hope you like it

🙂 One Proud Mommy
