Attack the Scrap Bucket ! fun project for kids and grown ups

We’ve all seen those fun Magnetic word sets that you use on your fridge, or freezer .. here’s a way to make your own. Great project for crafty homeschoolers, teachers, business signs or people who need something a little bit different from the usual word sets.
I was lucky enough to have some tails from Cohas (formerly ZiggBoard) Magnetic Sheets that I could cut into strips to make these letters and words.  You may have seen previous post where I started making letters and numbers for the lil man .. now we are progressing onto words and  so I got out my MFT Bottlecap letters die and off we went again.  I won’t lie… it’s a time consuming project… we all know it takes a lot  LOT of letters  to make up enough single letters to form a decent amount of words.ziggy_alpha3 I probably cut and assembled at least 10 sets of individual letters.. probably more  and I already cut out at least 8 sets to start forming word magnets. There are going to be a lot of letters you use A LOT and some you don’t use so much.. just store those for later.  As your kids vocabulary grows, you will be able to use those up to expand your set.  Anyone who is homeschooling already knows that it’s time consuming, but VERY rewarding and totally worth the time and money spent.

These dies are totally worth grabbing because you can use them for so many projects, both fun and educational for years to come.

Name tags, labels, cards, magnets, stickers …so many fun things.

Ok so what did I use?… pretty simple project.. as I said.. just time consuming

  • Cohas Magnetic sheet cut into strips
  • 110lb Card from my scrap box…I have a tonne of this from my Cricut Print & cut projects.  Now they are expanding the Print & Cut dimensions to fit almost a full 8.5×11 this will reduce my scraps… but even so..right now I have enough to make alphabet sets for half the neighborhood lol.
  • Mod Podge I use this to cover the strip first and attach the letters then add a coat on top to seal them in.
  • My Favorite Things Bottlecap Alphabet Dies
  • paint brush to apply the Mod Podge
  • TIME.. and Patience.. even if you just do a few strips at a time… it adds up to a decent set  fairly quickly

Of course if you are a good crafter who doesn’t have a pile of scraps lying around waiting for that “maybe one day project”.. you can always print your letters on printable Vinyl or adhesive label sheets and just cut it into strips. Less time consuming but I am determined to attack my scrap bucket  before this year is done!!! lol  Plus it is kind of fun letting him add a couple of strips at a time to the freezer, so he isn’t overwhelmed with a tonne of new words.

On a totally off topic random  thought.. just because we are on a sort of educational thing anyway.  We were in Toys R Us today and a lady was there, obviously overwhelmed by all the toys… she asked him how old he was. And I could tell she was hoping he was around the same age as someone she was shopping for.  Turns out she has a young relative flying in for Christmas and was struggling to find a  suitable gift.  She had a set of Power Ranger figures in her hand and asked him if he thought they were cool.  All she knew was the kid liked Super hero’s.

Well hot damned if my little guy didn’t jump in like the Bloody Toy Ambassador for Toys R US.. and dragged that poor lady all over the store showing her everything he wanted for Christmas lol… with a toy review and running commentary all the way. We started with Five Nights At Freddy, hit the Educational aisle where he proceeded to tell her how great the squishy Body  kit was..and reeled off  all the body parts shown on the back of the box, dragged her off to see Grossery Gang and the yuck truck on another aisle… then onto Imaginext vehicles and buildings… followed by transformers and finishing up with Octonauts.

Poor lady haha.. he talked her ear off for a solid half hour I think while dragging her round the store haha.  She was  in awe of his knowledge… specially when he started naming all the body parts…  and yes  he is getting that for Christmas, he just doesn’t know it yet LOL. ‘His Big’ sister in Australia is getting him that. It will be a fun start to his homeschooling science learning.

So proud of my lil man… that is the second time this month he has helped someone out in toys R US who was having probs picking gifts.

and back on track again…

Now I know decent Magnetic sheet is not always easy to come by, but I have used this magnetic sheet for all sorts of fun projects myself … from picture magnets,  to Metal Die storage.   If anyone is interested in what I would call it a crafters grab bag those will be available early next year.  These will most likely be pre-cut ready to go pieces in various shapes and sizes.

Need something other than alphabets, numbers and words?  want to make picture blocks, fun gifts, organization tags….or just have some fun and attach fun crafty items to cards etc … or decorate your locker.  This magnetic sheet is awesome,  everyone should have a bag of this in their stash.

Here are a few  of the other items I have made in the past.. search for magnet on the blog or have a wander through the projects tab at the top of the page for details on those projects.  and expect to see more of these projects next year.. I have some ideas I am dabbling with.

Quick little tag/bookmark project

This was a super simple and quick project something I have been wanting to do for ages. I have a journaling bible project that I wanted to do for a friend and this would be the perfect bookmark to go with it.  It features one of the Cute As A Button New Releases which came out today.  I was lucky enough to get sent some tags which were perfect for this project too.

This image was colored with pencil and alcohol blender for a soft wash look, foam strips cut with a wavy blade for  texture and depth.. protects the image without  damaging the book. A tassel from a pack I got at Michaels, with a couple of pony beads attached for weight  and all attached to the tag using Zig Photo Tape.

Fun, quick and easy project you can do for yourself, or with the kids.  Would make a fun project for bible study groups, or retreats/camps etc too.

Quick and Easy Sympathy Card & Another Die Giveaway

Ok, this one came together quicker than expected, so here is my sketch No 4 card for our Monthly Sketch Challenge over on the message board and it includes the Extra Credit for making a sympathy card. Now this is a Gazillion miles outside of my comfort zone… It’s way softer and more feminine than my usual typical style.  But as a friend told me, sometimes it’s good to step  out of your comfort zone.. so here it is.

Dies used Gina Marie stitched rectangle and a Gina Marie sympathy sentiment.  The sentiment was cut on a silver glitter card stock, the stitched die is  cut on 110lb card and popped with a foam rectangle behind.

Lace around the center is just some adhesive lace from a Joann grab bag last year. The lace down the side is from Walmart.

The silver rose is from the Michaels bargain racks. The front panel was also foam popped and mounted on a Recollections card base.

And now for the fun part…Scrapbook Outlet kindly sent me  this sentiment die to play with… and a second  one for one lucky blog reader.

Bloobel stamps are quirky and fun and have a Tim Burton-ish feel to them which appeals to me.  Hubby is a huge Nightmare Before Christmas  fan and loves Tim Burton movies.

If you haven’t seen these before, hop on over and join the group. It’s a fun group and lots of inspiration… and of course check out all the other fab images from Bloobel Stamps in the  Etsy Store.

You may have seen the other projects I did recently  for one of our message board  challenges using “Bekkah Bloom”

Apologies for a slow start to the month

logo_smFamily drama …. gotta love it.   But I’m back on track and ready to get cracking on some new projects.  I have some new Gina Marie dies, new digis from a whole bunch of fab artists and  some fun new ideas to play with.

I need to get caught up on my challenges too…. the ladies on our message board are showing off some fab projects.  I can definitely see the influence  of the Kit & Clowder classes showing up in the recent challenge pieces.. it’s fab!

I found a new die manufacturer all the way over in Australia… she has these really cool corner dies that some of us are dying to get our hands on.. woohoo …so stay tuned for more on that coming soon. We are grouping up to save on shipping costs.  I admit it, I have totally been enabling our girls this past month or so with all the fab new products and sites I have been finding.   Sorry .. but NOT Sorry girls ..loving your cards with all the new die cuts too much to say sorry and mean it lol.

Ok.. time to get cracking on some new projects.. let’s crank up the Cricut Explore and Sizzix Big Shot and see what happens   🙂

February Frankenstein Challenge – Arrrh me mateys…Pirates !!!!

Over on the message board our current Frankenstein Challenge is PIRATES !!! this is a non card challenge we do for fun. This was a cool one to do, I just wish I had more props for backdrops and setting the scene in the picture.. but oh well.

I had an old bottle of wine that has been in the cupboard since my mother visited in 2012 lol.. I knew I’d find a reason to use it eventually.
I hunted high and low for an image and finally found what I was looking for on Deviant Art. I sent a note to the artist and explained what I wanted to do and requested permission to use his image.
This morning I got a reply .. “No probs, have fun” Thank you karafactory.
The image was printed on  110lb card stock and  colored with a mix of Chameleon, Zig Kurecolor and Ranger Distress pens. The background and edges were aged using Ranger distress ink pads and an old brush.
The “Ye Olde Booty Call” was written by hand for the old fashioned  look  with a Zig Calligraphy pen  from the Memory system set.

Message Board Monthly Sketch Challenge Card #1

This is my Card for Sketch No.1 for February 2016 Monthly Sketch Challenge over on our message board.

Monthly Sketch Challenge Card #1

Stamp is a freebie from the Bloobel Stamps Facebook Group – Bekkah Bloom

I like these images; they are just a bit different and quirky..and as someone mentioned on the group, they have a Tim Burton feel to them. So when they offered up the Freebie I grabbed the chance to try coloring one of these :) colored with a mix of Chameleon, Zig Memory System Writers, Zig Kurecolor and Ranger Distress pens .. image was print and cut on the Cricut Explore.

Frame was cut with the new Lil’Inker Design dies… sorry still trying to find just the right cut pad combo for these, mine are not standard *grin.. so this particular set is not perfect… but the quirky image suited some quirky stitching to go with the quirky angle of the wavy foam pad…. so I chose this test frame instead of a “perfect” one. You may notice everything is a bit off center… that is actually deliberate…if you haven’t noticed by now..I’m a bit quirky myself lol.

Rhinestones are the nail bling I bought last year and they are set in circles embossed in the foam pad.. with…. a pen lid. Heh..whatever works.. right!

Stitched Dies – ScrapbookOutlet & Lil Inker Designs

I may have mentioned I have been having a little shopping Spree this month…. *grin

shaker 3
One of the things I have been looking for is stitched dies to use with my shaker card windows. One of our ladies has these fab stitched dies Die-namics – My  Favorite Things which I have coveted for a while..and yes… I’ll be getting some of those too :).  So I went on a shopping expedition looking for some stitched dies.  I ran across a message board post that mentioned Scrapbook Outlet dies and they had a lot of nice things to say about them.. not only quality but the price too.

We all know stitched dies aren’t cheap… well guess what…

They aren’t the double stitched dies I had been looking at.. but I picked up a bunch of single stitch dies from Scrapbook Outlet  at a fab price and also a Die from another company Lil Inker Designs which is quite unique.  I am hoping that these work well in combo with each other and some dies I already have.. we shall see, they should be here early next week.  Just in time to use them for the February challenges over on the message board  and  of course the KennyK Group challenges twice a month 🙂

By the way for anyone interested,  there is a  Design Team Call over at Lil Inker Designs. I’d love to  try out for that, they have some great products…. but I’m not sure I could compete with all the fab card makers who would love that position.  I’ll be posting  Design Team Call information in another post shortly.

Anywho, back to the Dies… what really caught my eye on the Lil Inkers Die I bought was ..One ..the size and Two the design.  I am really hoping that their ratios match some of my other dies so I can mix and match for some unique designs of my own… we shall see. You know me..I like to experiment.

Check this Die range out, it’s pretty cool.  I know I’ll be back for some of the others myself, the thrifty crafters out there are going to love these because of the way they utilize the negative and positive…. we all love less paper waste and time saving..right!

“The largest die in this set cuts an A2 stitched rectangle- something that we’ve not yet featured in any of our rectangle sets. Now you have a stitched rectangle the exact size of your card base! The remaining three dies in this set feature our exclusive Dual Stitching on the inside and outside of the cut line which can be used in so many fun and creative ways!”

The other dies I bought are from Scrapbook Outlet.  Now these are  just single stitch dies, but you can’t beat the price on these and I read good things about the quality of these too. I think these will work nicely with other dies I have….. and intend to have *grin.

The Dies I got are in the  *** GINA MARIE DESIGNS *** range  on the site…and I couldn’t resist a few extras while I was there  lol.

I also picked up a Rectangle and Square set in the X stitch design , a “Welcome” Die,  a really cool key embossing folder which will be perfect for a project I am working on and a couple of clearance stamps.

I’m super excited  to get my hands on all these new goodies and get cracking on some challenge cards… so  expect to see a bunch of card projects towards the end of this month while I play catch up.
