Adventures in Resin

Some of you may have heard me mention earlier in the year that I had wanted to get some more embedding resin, I haven’t had any in years and its a fun thing to do.  Well I got some a few months back and  we had a quick play with it just to get a refresher for mommy  and make sure I had molds that would work  and a good mix ratio.

Well instead of buying specific embedding resin molds, I decided to have a play with some of the silicon baking and confectionery molds. I thought they might be easier for the little guy to unload than the traditional stiff molds… plus if I am honest I have had my eye on molds from one of my affiliates Marvelous Molds for a while… and for this purpose too lol. Even though they are technically designed for cake decorators, they do work for other crafts…. so I figured if the cheap ones worked… these fancy molds  from Marvelous molds are sure to work.  If you missed my previous post about these molds, you can find it here Marvelous Molds – cake decor, polymer, plaster and more .  I stumbled across this one day when I was doing updated links and had to  sign up, they have such fab designs and these molds will work for so many different craft materials… not just cake making.

300 X 250px
I had forgotten how much fun embedding resin can be… we decided to start  off simple so me and  lil Man D  mixed up a batch… I say we..when I really mean me.  He got to choose the  stuff that went in it though…  and we ended up with some Oceanic type glitter.  It’s very hard to photograph… but looks really cool.. think mermaids..or fishies.

And we picked out one of the molds… yeah can you tell who picked this one?  lol.  It’s a really cool little jigsaw puzzle mold which I think we will be using quite a lot.  Wait till you see all the other fun silicon  molds we have waiting to get played with… it’s going to be so much fun seeing what the little guy comes up with as far as ideas on objects to embed.

If you have never tried embedding resin, it’s definitely something to add to  your list.  My personal preference is resin from a company in Cali, called Tap Plastics. But if you just want to get something NOW and have a play, you can also find embedding resin and the necessary Catalyst.. I say NECESSARY as sometimes people do not realize you have to buy a catalyst too…at Michaels as well as some very affordable silicon molds in the cake and candy making section.

anywho… just a quick teaser of things to come .. Here are our glitzy Jigsaw shapes that will be getting turned into key rings and such and sent out or abandoned as part of our abandoned art  projects.

I got really lucky a while back and found something in clearance at Michaels that made my day.. would you believe I found a silicon mold for making ..BANGLES.  Can’t wait to try that one out with the little guy too.

I also spotted this one online, but haven’t found it in store yet so I may have to order this one for him.  My son is a huge Lego fan, so this would be great for our resin and plaster projects.

…and we did grab a  set of these square molds too.. a large 6 mold set with 3 inch squares and a set of 12 1.5 inch squares.

To be honest there were so many cool molds and even though they were on offer, we had to be good.   So the lil man picked out the ones he wanted and mommy will get the ones she wants later.

Now we just have to decide what to put in them… sadly I don’t have what I really wanted to use any more.  Last time I played with resin I had a brand of shrinky dink that if baked just right and you caught it before it bonded together… the top surface would separate from the base leaving this clear printed layer and it was perfect for embedding printed designs seamlessly.  The shrinky dink I have now is different.  But I have other ideas to experiment with  that I didn’t get to try last time I had resin… so I am not going to be  short of fun things to try with the lil man.

Between the huge plaster of paris bucket and the embedding resin and all these fun molds.. I think the lil man and I will have plenty of fun projects ahead.  He just started to experiment with mix media projects… and this is perfect for those and all the fun Steampunk projects I like to do… so many possibilities!! so many unique embellishments to be had!

Bugaboo Sketch Challenge inspired notebook

I was cruising along doing my thing when I ran across the  new Bugaboo Stamps latest “Stella Says Sketch Challenge”.  Now I am not a huge fan of sketch challenges..I like to do my own thing.. but once in a while a sketch will catch my eye and I’m like

“hmm.. yup..I can work with that! “

….and this  was one of them.  This is the Sketch for Challenge 502 which runs till February 6th.  Now I am kind of used to our sketch challenge on the message board..which is VERY relaxed as far as “rules goes”  and very open to artistic license. They are an inspiration/ suggestion not an absolute LOL.. so everyone is used to me skipping  the sentiments section on my cards and projects.

Sometimes they just don’t need one, other times I want to leave it  till I know who the recipient is… or let’s face it.. it’s me!! Sometimes it’s just not something I should probably post pictures of for the masses lol.
In this case, it just doesn’t need one… it’s a notebook, not a card.  I just wanted to have some fun with these Bugaboo Stamps I have in my collection and practice  blending techniques with my Chameleon Pens.  I will enter it any way, just to show it off for anyone who cares to  check it out…and to show a bit of support for one of our Sponsors Challenges.
Anywho here is my fun little notebook, made from scratch using a Fellowes Comb Binder and Plastic Combs.  The images used are Hedgehog Flower and Mini Set- Spring Flower Blocks which is a set of 6.  Colored with Chameleon Pens on Canson Mix Media the notebook was made using Recollections card for the cover and the inside pages.

I was considering laminating the covers, but decided against it.  The center panel was layers of black & white matching card stock and I used Zig Kuretake Photo Tape Runner for my adhesive. and the  Hedgehog was also printed on white, then colored and Die cut using one of my newer Gina Marie Designs Dies “MINI HEART LACE SQUARE DIE SET”

This one  may or may not join my abandoned art project bucket… it’s kinda cute and I may keep it.

Be sure to enter your Bugaboo Stamps Projects in their Challenges..at “Catch the Bug Challenge Spot”

and of course our brand new one that started this month “Bugaboo Crafty Challenge”.  It’s a monthly prize challenge that starts on the 15th of each month for Bugaboo Stamp projects

.. and then of course you can also enter it in the “Crafty Awesomeness Challenge” here on the blog too, which is an anything goes and starts on the 1st of each month.

Marvelous Molds – cake decor, polymer, plaster and more

Some of you may have heard me  talking about a desire to start working with resin again.. and you may have already seen Playdoh projects and the like on here in the past.  I was so excited to accidentally stumble across this site when I was updating affiliate info on the blog.  CHECK these out…..

mm-web-logo-200px

Now these are  Food Grade Silicone molds…. but they can  be used for plaster, soap, wax and a bunch more crafting  media.  They can withstand 400 degree heat, so work with allsorts of materials.

One of the really cool features of these molds that I liked a lot was the cutting edge built in to the design and the wide array of designs and texture plates available, which would be great for my playdoh, polymer and plaster projects.  If you enjoy crafting with 3D embellishments…  check these out.  I know a bunch of you do mixed media pieces and upcycle and re purpose pieces in a variety of media.

I picked out a few of my personal favorites to show you, but you really have to go check them out for yourself.  Whether you are a cake decorator… and we have a few of you ladies too in my various Facebook Groups and contacts, or you are a mixed media artist, jewelry maker, modeler or whatever…. these are definitely worth a look.
As soon as I have some spare  money, hopefully after Christmas…. I’m grabbing some of these and a new supply of Tap Plastics resin.  Woot… so excited to find really cool molds  to play with.

The video on the page I am linking to is worth a watch even if you aren’t a cake decorator… it  has some useful information and tips on it that apply to any use.

Mother’s Day Shaker Game Card

The Blog Challenge  at Cute As A Button CAAB this month is “Mother’s Day”  and I chose to  make a fun Shaker Game Card which is suitable for any occasion when you need to let your mom know how much you love her and wanted to say “Thank You”.

I kept it super simple  to maintain the focal point and message conveyed.  I love the Black, white and red combo… it’s very clean and classic and suitable for both sexes and all ages. The ornate scroll backing to the shaker is very  gender neutral too so you could use this idea with a  variety of image themes, for any occasion. I had a bunch of precuts for the shaker card windows, so that made this a very quick and simple card to  make.

Shaker Card Windows back on Ebay early January

Shaker card with Rice

Things weren’t as crazy hectic as I thought they would be, so I’ll be relisting the shaker card windows a bit earlier than expected. I will update the links on the side panel when I relist them.

For all you new to Cricut and card making… here is a brief look at shaker cards. Now a lot of people use recycled packaging and acetate sheets. We had a challenge to do  shaker cards earlier in the year and everyone struggled to get them built without everything sticking to them

…. so that is how I ended up sourcing out a supplier and then decided to share,  since I wasn’t the only one having problems finding windows.

The idea is basically like making a snow globe on a card, or if you are adventuress like me…. I came up with a new concept..GAME cards. Those are really cool and fun to make.
The game cards are like those old hand held games we had as kids, where you roll it around till the balls fall in the holes.  A small pack of balls is included with the windows in case anyone wants to try this.  I have some new colored plastic ones now too, which are great for the kids cards.

These particular windows are 3 inch diameter circles and a 1/4 in height. They have a flange to glue them down.. so no more building up layers of foam to get the height and worrying about things sticking to the adhesives…. or trying to hide the edges. You can mount these in two different ways.. over  with a frame or under….through a cut out depending on your style of card 🙂

Here are a few quick sample cards…  so you get a better idea of what I am referring to.  You can see the original posts about making these shaker cards HERE

Update on Shaker Card Windows on Ebay

snowballs2_wm
Just an FYI for anyone who was thinking about ordering the shaker card window pouches before Christmas.

Last date to ship these out will be November 30th.  I’ll resume Ebay listings again in January and hopefully there will also be some 3 inch square windows  shortly after that too.

I’m still debating on whether to get 3 inch squares or 2×3 inch rectangles next.

** the balls  for the game cards now come in various colors 4.5mm metal and 6mm plastic red, green, white, blue & black and a mixed pack of about 40 is included in the 10 packs of windows.
