Velvet Bows – a Black & White Affair

Just a quickie  card I made up last week using a new cut file from CraftsUPrint designer  Lyn Simms. This is Bows 2, the second set of bow cut files I have purchased  from Lyn and I just love this stars design.  These bows are gorgeous when cut on the SEI Velvet Paper I have, because it flexes so well on that paper for gorgeous curves and a luxurious effect.

I added the Polka Dot layer to a plain black card base and then popped a black  flower in the center from a Michaels bargain bin pack.  A really quick card with lots of impact….

Christmas card with Black Velvet Poinsettia panel

I love how this one turned out …   this is another one of my CraftsUPrint cut files  from a recent purchase.

I used the single panel for this design and cut it from SEI Black Velvet Paper. I adhered it to a sheet of Canson Mix Media and colored the panel with Zig Clean Color markers I trimmed it to size and inked the edges. I made a 5.5×8.5 card base with 110lb card stock with a black boho cut layer and a red and white polka dot layer and popped the image topper on that. I added a corner die cut by My Little Paper World.

What I love about this design is that the negative left after the main cut on my Cricut Explore is equally stunning and would be perfect for another project, or to make a matching envelope. I hate wasting paper.. but specially this Velvet lol..so it’s fabulous for this type of project..
Supplies:

BARGAIN ALERT

Sarcastic Birthday Card for the over 21’s

The minute I saw this image I knew I had to have it….she is perfect for my sense of humor. This is my, rather late DT Project for this months Crafty Awesomeness Challenge. I can finally get access to my craft carts  now the ceilings and carpets are in.

This is Bianca Doll Stamp, one of a bunch of really cool images by KaraDollStudio on Etsy.  I printed her on Canson Mixed Media  paper, colored with Chameleon Pens and then I scanned it into my software and added the sentiment and border. I then reprinted the colored version on the same Mixed Media Paper. I took a wet brush to add in some subtle shadow in the same way I did in previous projects using only the printer ink.

The main image is popped on foam and the background  is made up of a lacy cut from Gina Marie Designs using the Lacy Lattice.

Full details of materials used below 🙂

2 Quickie cards featuring Gina Marie Designs

Well as some of you already know… I picked up some new Gina Marie Dies this weekend. So, after showing you how easy the Lacey Lattice really is to clean with the Crafter’s Toothbrush, I thought I would show you a couple of quick cards.

gmd_dies_The card on the left features dies from 4 Gina Marie Designs sets and the one on the right
features 2 of the same die sets.  Details below for anyone interested.

The card on the left also has a large flower which is cut on the Cricut from a CraftsUPrint cut file I picked up recently, with a beaded center and hand colored leaves … and a little rhinestone bling bling for the petite flower centers.  The Lacey Lattice was also given a coat of Ranger Distress Ink “Picket Fence” and some Wink of Stella  for a subtle vintage look.  the small flowers also have a lick of Wink of Stella.

The card on the left features a lacy lattice cut as a nested die set…and the one on the right was cut using the dies separately and a black layer was used for a subtle contrast and to tie it into the black butterfly and offset text.  I didn’t realize I had glued the text on a bit wonky till I took the photo.. DOH… practice makes perfect ..right  LOL.   The one on the right  has a Darice polka dot strip border, which was highlighted with some pink rhinestones.

All in all a quick and easy card to make , specially if  you like to use dies like these to combat the scrap bucket issue….and already have  a stash cut and ready to go.

I had to laugh when I showed a friend a sneaky peek and got this response…

“Is this SAMANTHA??????? The one I have known for over a year now! LOL”

followed by

“They are gorgeous but they are different for you. I am lovin that softer side of you ha ha ha”

Don’t get to used to it…. lol

When did you first start drawing/designing seriously?

2006

What was the first product you ever had for sale?

I began designing papers and toppers to use in workshops in my bricks and mortar store back in 2006 because I couldn’t get what I wanted for my classes. My customers loved them so much they wanted to buy them so it went from there, with designing papers and decoupage sheets and then stamps and I’ve never stopped since!

If you weren’t doing what you are doing now…. what job would you have?

I’d be a cake baker!

How long have you been in business?

I don’t really have one one thing or person I’m inspired by although I think I am heavily influenced by my childhood favourite author Enid Blyton. I’m like a sponge, I just soak up everything I see every day and my inspiration generally comes when I’m asleep and wakes me in the middle of the night with an idea.

How many people work with/for you?

2

What  job did you have BEFORE you started  drawing/designing for a living?

I have always worked within a graphics/print environment but not as a designer, so I have years of managing print, packaging and design for people like Disney, Tesco, Airfix, Cadburys, Nestle, Mars to name a few.

If you were offered a trip to the moon, would you go..and if so .. which of your images/products would leave on the moon??

If I can come back I’d go and I’d draw while I was there so I guess it would be a drawing of the earth with me sat on the North Pole like a big fat snowball freezing my butt off lol

Do you plan to grow old gracefully, or disgracefully?

Disgracefully of course!

If you were a classic car…. what would you be?

Not a car, sorry – I’d be a Lambretta SX200 with all the trimmings!

Who scared you most as a kid when you were being naughty.. your parents or the boogey man?

Eeek! My parents for sure!

What do you love most about all the people you meet through your work?

I love how craft appeals to such a diverse range of people from all walks of life and brings them together. Most of all for me, it really warms my heart when I hear that someone the other side of the world is using a piece of my work to create something amazing, I find it a very humbling experience that someone felt my work was worth spending their time and money on.

Show me the drawing you think most closely resembles you physically or personality-wise

I’m not afraid to have an opinion – a good and bad thing!

Winnie in Wonderland

Which drawing/product are you the most proud of in your collection?

Would you go cave diving with sharks?

No! I deal with enough sharks in life never mind swimming with them!

1950s

Have you ever been on a blind date…. and if so..  was it fun, or a nightmare?

Nightmare!

What’s your favorite hobby when you want to relax?

Designer Showcase

Where are you ?

I live and work in a village in  Nottinghamshire.  My commute is horrendous … I roll out of bed, stagger down the stairs …. and settle down with my laptop …. absolutely awful I know …. but I mostly manage to get to work on time every day! lol

When did you first start drawing/designing seriously?

It was around 2006 when I first offered designs for sale but I had been cardmaking for a long while but couldn’t find any designs I liked so I had been drawing my own for a long while …. other cardmakers saw them and wanted to know where to buy them so around 2006 I started putting them on CDs to sell …. and it blossomed from there!!

Dressing_the_Tree

“Old Man Ken on the Beach” reminds me of my Dad who will be 90 this year and he always wore a string vest and rolled his trousers up on the beach when I was a child.

How many people work with/for you?

 I was a doctor’s receptionist and secretary

What’s your favorite color?

Pink …. and I love it even more if it’s got polka dots on it!

What was your favorite subject in school…?

I loved art but I had to give it up in the 3rd year as my parents thought needlework would be a better O Level to take.  They were right in that I not only got an A in Needlework but I went on to make my children’s clothes on an old Singer Treadle sewing machine (and knitted/crocheted all their woollies too) which saed me lots of money when they were small.   but it’s ironic that I went on to make my living from Art! I did go back to school and Art College as an Adult returner once my children were older and took 3 GCSE’s and an A level in Art …. getting A’s in all of those too!

When no one is listening…. do you sing in the shower?

Oh YES …. unfortunately for anyone who is listening!

What is your most popular item in the store/shop?

When you get the midnight munchies… what do you grab?

Chocolate, love the stuff …. and I’m sure midnight calories don’t count … they don’t … do they???!!

How long does the average design/art work take from concept to final product?

It varies from but My On the Shelf Cards was the longest at over a year to get from my head to fruition.  They normally start with an idea or question …. like … Is it possible?   I wonder if I can?  How can I do that?   Will this work? etc

When you are working, what is the view from your window like

Looking over the decking and the garden to the fields at the bottom of the garden and then the Derbyshire hills in the distance … we get cows trimming any plants that dare to grow too high! lol

Starting a big card project – 1 down

I am working on a big card project for a friend.. she wants a mix of cards for various occasions. I have free reign on design so that will be fun and I can play around with ideas and styles. Here is one I made…. it’s a welcome to the neighborhood/moving in card.

I kept the coloring cartoonish/childish to match the image ..I think it’s kinda cute. Nice and quick, simple card.

cute, quick and simple

Super simple, quick and cute Bugaboostamps card.

bugaboo_january2016

This is my BugabooStamps January Challenge card…. You can use any Bugaboostamps image you want… and it’s obviously a coloring challenge.

This is something I colored a month or so ago and was in my practice card stack… love the Bugaboostamps Ladybugs and snails.. too cute.

Keeping it simple, the image is trimmed and the corners rounded…. mounted on a foam rectangle. This was mounted on a Red Polka Dot card base from Michaels; with matching rounded corners and a cutesie ribbon from the Michaels $1 bin, just for a little something extra.

Great card for allsorts of occasions..  leave it plain, or add a sentiment.

Image is colored with Chameleon pens…. if you ignore how long it takes some of us to pick a card base and matching ribbon…it’s a very quick project too 🙂
