Adventures in Resin

Some of you may have heard me mention earlier in the year that I had wanted to get some more embedding resin, I haven’t had any in years and its a fun thing to do.  Well I got some a few months back and  we had a quick play with it just to get a refresher for mommy  and make sure I had molds that would work  and a good mix ratio.

Well instead of buying specific embedding resin molds, I decided to have a play with some of the silicon baking and confectionery molds. I thought they might be easier for the little guy to unload than the traditional stiff molds… plus if I am honest I have had my eye on molds from one of my affiliates Marvelous Molds for a while… and for this purpose too lol. Even though they are technically designed for cake decorators, they do work for other crafts…. so I figured if the cheap ones worked… these fancy molds  from Marvelous molds are sure to work.  If you missed my previous post about these molds, you can find it here Marvelous Molds – cake decor, polymer, plaster and more .  I stumbled across this one day when I was doing updated links and had to  sign up, they have such fab designs and these molds will work for so many different craft materials… not just cake making.

300 X 250px
I had forgotten how much fun embedding resin can be… we decided to start  off simple so me and  lil Man D  mixed up a batch… I say we..when I really mean me.  He got to choose the  stuff that went in it though…  and we ended up with some Oceanic type glitter.  It’s very hard to photograph… but looks really cool.. think mermaids..or fishies.

And we picked out one of the molds… yeah can you tell who picked this one?  lol.  It’s a really cool little jigsaw puzzle mold which I think we will be using quite a lot.  Wait till you see all the other fun silicon  molds we have waiting to get played with… it’s going to be so much fun seeing what the little guy comes up with as far as ideas on objects to embed.

If you have never tried embedding resin, it’s definitely something to add to  your list.  My personal preference is resin from a company in Cali, called Tap Plastics. But if you just want to get something NOW and have a play, you can also find embedding resin and the necessary Catalyst.. I say NECESSARY as sometimes people do not realize you have to buy a catalyst too…at Michaels as well as some very affordable silicon molds in the cake and candy making section.

anywho… just a quick teaser of things to come .. Here are our glitzy Jigsaw shapes that will be getting turned into key rings and such and sent out or abandoned as part of our abandoned art  projects.

I got really lucky a while back and found something in clearance at Michaels that made my day.. would you believe I found a silicon mold for making ..BANGLES.  Can’t wait to try that one out with the little guy too.

I also spotted this one online, but haven’t found it in store yet so I may have to order this one for him.  My son is a huge Lego fan, so this would be great for our resin and plaster projects.

…and we did grab a  set of these square molds too.. a large 6 mold set with 3 inch squares and a set of 12 1.5 inch squares.

To be honest there were so many cool molds and even though they were on offer, we had to be good.   So the lil man picked out the ones he wanted and mommy will get the ones she wants later.

Now we just have to decide what to put in them… sadly I don’t have what I really wanted to use any more.  Last time I played with resin I had a brand of shrinky dink that if baked just right and you caught it before it bonded together… the top surface would separate from the base leaving this clear printed layer and it was perfect for embedding printed designs seamlessly.  The shrinky dink I have now is different.  But I have other ideas to experiment with  that I didn’t get to try last time I had resin… so I am not going to be  short of fun things to try with the lil man.

Between the huge plaster of paris bucket and the embedding resin and all these fun molds.. I think the lil man and I will have plenty of fun projects ahead.  He just started to experiment with mix media projects… and this is perfect for those and all the fun Steampunk projects I like to do… so many possibilities!! so many unique embellishments to be had!

Craftsuprint Steampunk meets Gina Marie Designs

If you follow the blog you will have seen the recent 12×12 Steampunk page I did featuring “Brianna Blaster” from KennyK stamps and a Tina Fitch Craftsuprint clock cut file. The cogs that were used on that project for the background stencil and cog embellishments came from this kit, also by Tina Fitch. I personalized the cut file with some Gina Marie Dies.. using the lattice panel from the Lacey Lattice set I just bought and also added in a butterfly and sentiment, also cut from Gina Marie Dies.

Be sure to check out the recent post about weeding these intricate dies and the “crafters toothbrush”  and a couple of card projects using these dies in a much softer project.   Versatility  is very important to me, I’m on a tight budget and need my supplies to work for their keep ….it’s got to be something I can use again and again and get a fresh look each time.

The cogs were given a metallic finish using Faber Castell Gellato’s and the gold layer of the butterfly was a split from some dollar store gold glitter card. I split the glitter layer from the card layer to give it a thinner, softer touch. I love the cog section of this cut file… it’s such a great pattern and so useful for so many other projects too.  This one was cut from a SVG file on the Cricut Explore, but is available in other machine formats too.

Saucy card — Imagine that !!! lol

Who woulda thunk it huh.. me doing something a bit saucy.. huh LOL

Don’t panic it’s not THAT bad..but it’s definitely NOT a mermaid, or a cute fairy  ..sorry M.. no butterflies either lol.  This is the second of two images I picked up by new artists, to me at least.  This is
cham_ho_canvas_mount_wmded cham_ho_canvas_mount_wmded_closeupcham_ho_closeup_canvas
She was hand colored, then scanned into the computer so I could add some borders and print her out on Canvas Paper.  I frayed up the canvas edges… which sometimes is easier said than done, but I love that slightly grungy look.  This particular Canvas Paper is something I have had for YEARS…  but it isn’t widely available anymore   :/ I did find one place still selling it… in small packs of 2 if anyone wanted to give it a try.  Sadly, a lot of my specialty papers that I love are no longer available… so once I get through my stash… I shall have to look for alternatives.

She was colored with Chameleons and Zig Kurecolor,  my goto combo for most projects and a Zig Memory System Chalk Pen for the card background.. I love how nicely they play together 🙂  I added in some extra detail under the skirt area to give the impression of sheer frills…it’s kinda hard to see in the pics though.. sorry.

The image is “Arcadia Pin-Up” by ShadowClocksyDigis  which you can find on Etsy and also Facebook.  She is foam padded with a sheet of Darice Adhesive foam and the sentiment is a Heidi Swapp die.

“Brianna Blaster” Steampunk Scrapbook Album Cover

LOVED making this…. Another one of the fab cut files I picked up with my winnings over at CUP the other week.. well actually, technically it’s two lol. I swiped elements of another steampunk card by the same designer and added them in to this project showcasing her clock design.  You’ll get to see that one and more details later this week.

I am not totally sure if this will end up as an album cover or if it may end up in a shadow box frame… we shall see. Details and supplies are below the image.

The page is a 12×12 sheet from a Neutral Solid color pad by Craft Smith. I inked up the background using the larger cog cut out and a Craft Smart Dye ink pad.. very quick and’s intentionally patchy for the overall effect…. so a very easy technique for steampunk backgrounds.

Velvet studded Magnet KennyK “Tomboy Trouble”

I’ve always loved this image…. it’s so me LOL.   Oh how I miss my ladies US steel toe combat boots, I practically lived in those dang boots haha.  I would do everything from lay concrete, to go clubbing in those things and the cardinal sin was… telling me I need to polish my boots.  OH HECK NO !!!  I remember taking them into a British cobblers to have them re-soled and re-heeled and as I was leaving he shouts out “I’ll have them all polished up for you too”

Oh no you won’t, thank you very much.. but no sir.. you will not polish my boots.

Poor guy musta thought I was crazy…. I don’t  think he ever had a customer who didn’t want their stuff polished and looking as good as new ….  but he did now  <<<THIS GAL

Anywho…. enough of memory lane….so here she is, this is “Tomboy Trouble” by KennyK. She is one I colored digitally before I started playing with markers n stuff.  I had printed her out recently to test out my Eco Tank …. to be honest the colored ink is virtually untouched since I got it in March.  But…I figured I would have a crack at it and see how the velvet paper handles colored images too.  I love this velvet paper and like to see what it can handle… you will notice I go through phases and fads and moods with my crafting, and lately the velvet paper has been making an appearance again lol.

Well I had her laying around in my practice piece box and I had just finished another project….which you will have to wait till next week for.  I had a spare piece of die cut stitched magnetic sheet from  that project.. so I though ..what the hell.. lets have a bit of fun.

So …I trimmed her down and glued her on, plonked on a few  black flowers and then broke out the studs I bought earlier this year.  These are like rhinestones and I bought them earlier in the year specifically with KennyK pieces in mind  🙂

Popped on a few star studs with glue and VOILA …. a fun new magnet 🙂

kk_magnet_velvetI’m not sure she will make it to the Abandoned Art Project collection yet….I’m kind of attached 🙂

Oversized Vintage Style Humorous Birthday Card

Another quick oversized card…  this one is featuring Scarlett West by KennyK.  I already had this image that I had digitally colored last year sitting on my I just took her and colorized her to give a monotone sepia look, added in the  text and then printed her on some Printable Canvas paper I have had for YEARS !  This particular one has sheen to it, but not all canvas papers do. I just rough inked up the edges with Tim Holtz distress ink pads and a little brushwork.  Goes without saying.. she is foam mounted with Darice fun foam too too 🙂
scarlett_lotta_blow_wmdI cut the cogs/gears on my Big Shot and colored them first with a dry brushed layer of distress inks, then went over them with some metallic gellatos to give them a metallic shine.

The background is a scored and folded 12×12  sheet from a Craft Smith pad “Neutrals” to produce a 6×12 card,  then it was stamped with various vintage inspired stamps in black Ranger Archive ink.  Edges were smudged up with a dry brush and Archive ink.

I also printed Scarlett on some Shrinky Dink today….. but that is a whole nother project 🙂

Spotlight Series Day 3 – KennyK Stamps

Who are you ? are wife-and-husband team of Elena and Kenny Kiernan. I am the stamp designer for KennyK Stamps and KennyK is a professional Illustrator, together we are have lots of creative chemistry!

Store: kennykstamps

Facebook Group: Club KennyK

Blog: KennyK Stamps Blog

Where are you ?

We are currently in Northeastern Pennsylvania and came here to be close to family, although we are both NY’ers and love going back to our old stomping grounds every chance we get!

When did you first start drawing/designing seriously?

Kenny has been drawing since he could hold a crayon, he was born with a natural artistic talent, although he didn’t take it seriously as a profession until after graduate school. I myself was a professional Event Planner when I married The Man, and we always wanted to collaborate and jam our creativeness together. With the help of Donna Smith, we discovered the world of digi stamps, the rest is history!

What was the first product you ever had for sale?

The first digi product we offered for sale was a collection of sassy girl characters we called “Glam Gang”. We stopped using collection titles, but these girls made a huge impact on the paper crafting world! Here are just a few from the original Glam Gang collection –

All That

Breast Cancer Fighter

Download Diva

Brooklyn Babe

Name your favorite cartoon?

For Kenny it is Popeye and I think mine is still old school Tom & Jerry!

Favorite quote?

Rock Your Crafts! Of course 🙂

What is your favorite piece in the whole store?

The ElenaK stamp of course! All kidding aside, this is a question I could never answer, they are all apart of us and so loved!

Who is your inspiration/muse?

Kenny is a huge comic book geek (a very sexy geek) and it’s our attitude, lifestyle and personalities that bring out creative inspirations.

What’s your guilty pleasure?

Hoarding crafts supplies that I never use. They are just so pretty to look at. Oh and Amazon Prime, there is always a package at our door.

What’s your favorite color?

Kenny’s is the blues and I am in the red and hot pinks.

If you were getting a tattoo… what would it be?

To everyone’s surprise Kenny has no tattoos and is not a fan. I have one and if he didn’t dislike them so much I would have more.

If you got offered a weekend in a haunted  house/castle etc.. would you say yes?

Heck no! And that is from both of us!

If you suddenly changed careers and went to work at Disney…what character would you want to be?

We would be The Incredibles!

What’s your favorite horror movie?

For me Halloween (kill, kill, kill, kill). Kenny has never seen it!!!!!! His is the Shining. Good one KennyK!

When no one is listening…. do you sing in the shower?

All the time!! Me, me, me, me ,meee!

What is your most popular item in the store/shop?

Bow (Adult)

Funny enough when I designed Bow, I hadn’t giving Kenny much reference to what she would be wearing, I was going to add that on once I saw the character drawn. Kenny is the one that made her with no clothes on! I said there was no way we could put that on our shop. We would shock everyone. So, for fun, we decided to sell both versions, Bow Adult (with no clothes) and Bow and see what happens. It turns out that Bow Adult is one of our top sellers!! Right then and there we really knew who are audience was!

Who was your first celebrity crush…and have you drawn them?

For Kenny it was Rachel Welch and for me it was Elvis! We have never drawn them.

If you weren’t doing what you are doing now…. what job would you have?

I would work in production for movie sets. Kenny would be a full time musician/rock star.

How long have you been in business?

EST. 2011

If you got locked in an elevator for 6 hours.. who would you most like to be locked in with ?

Kenny said: The beautiful and vivacious ElenaK (what a guy!) I say: Sexy KennyK! duh!

When you get the midnight munchies… what do you grab?

We love ice cream at night. When the kids are asleep, shhhhhh!

What’s your favorite event, or holiday of the year?

Halloween and St. Patricks day take the cake in our house.

Would you go cave diving with sharks?

Absolutely not and that is for both of us.

Which decade do you think had the best music?

The 70’s hands down

Have you ever been on a blind date…. and if so..  was it fun, or a nightmare?

Huh, I don’t know if Kenny has ever been on a blind date. I have and it was a nightmare. It was a blind date, but also a double date. A couple I knew wanted to set me up with this guy. He said hi, then never looked at me or spoke to me the rest of the night, called his friends during the date and left early. I feel terrible about it till this day. I mean talk about intimidation. Poor guy couldn’t handle all that is Elena. I hope I didn’t scar him for life.

What’s your favorite hobby when you want to relax?

Snuggling with our little bunnies <3

Do you secretly watch WWE wrestling when no one is around?

Haha, no, but I know it’s hugely popular

If you were offered a trip to the moon, would you go..and if so .. which of your images/products would leave on the moon??

Fun Question!  Me: Absolutely!!! One of my dreams. Kenny: No.  I would leave Vikki Lee Vicious, so they (whoever they are) would know that strong badass women rule the earth!

Do you plan to grow old gracefully, or disgracefully?

We don’t mind growing old, cause we are young at heart. We have had loads and loads of fun using up our youth, now we are happy to living a family life. So, gracefully, I guess.

If you were a classic car…. what would you be?

We would both be classic American hot rod muscle cars! Hot and Fast! LOL!!

How long does the average design/art work take from concept to final product?

When we don’t have other deadline interruptions it can take about 2 or 3 days of edits before we settle on a final product.

When you are working, what is the view from your window like

I am so lucky.  My backyard is adjacent to the elementary school, so I see they playground just past my yard. At lunch time I open my window to hear the kids playing.  Kids having fun is really the best sound ever! Kenny sees rooftops and a view of the beautiful church steeple.

What’s the one song guaranteed to have you shaking your booty anytime, anyplace ..anywhere?

Any good classic rock

Who scared you most as a kid when you were being naughty.. your parents or the boogey man?

My mom! She can have an 8ft man shaking in his boots. She is powerful!!

What do you love most about all the people you meet through your work?

We love that we have built friendships with people all over the world that we never met in person, but they have become a real part of our KennyK Family.

Show me the drawing you think most closely resembles you physically or personality-wise

For me it’s Sexy Rocker. For Kenny it’s Superhero, a.k.a Captain Damntastic

Sexy Rocker

Which drawing/product are you the most proud of in your collection?

I am truly most proud of our Steampunk collection. It is not something we were very familiar with before hand, yet we were able to create a fantastic line of sassy, sexy, intricate ladies and they are still some of our best sellers. Now we are total Steampunk fans.

Who are you ?  Amanda S. Byron, Faery Ink

Facebook Group: Faery Ink Group

Where are you ?  Ashland, Ohio, USA

When did you first start drawing/designing seriously?
I’ve drawn since I was very little. I sold drawings of Jessica Rabbit in 4th grade and ‘bubble letter’ names with flowers and such in middle school lol. I started selling web graphics and drawing tutorials in 2003, digital stamps in 2013. I’ll let you know if I start taking anything seriously haha 😉

What was the first product you ever had for sale?
As far as digital stamps, I made a bunch of stuff to put up before I opened shop. I like to prepare ahead usually.

What is your favorite piece in the whole store?

That would be like choosing between my kids lol. Instead I’ll pick one I really like but have never seen used:

Who is your inspiration/muse?
My kids, my little nieces, nature, mythology, Art Nouveau, Mucha, Waterhouse, books like the Discworld series, Alice in Wonderland, Chronicles of Narnia, Grimms’ Faerytales, Tim Burton, 80s cartoons like Rainbow Brite, Strawberry Shortcake and He-Man (lol), sci-fi/fantasy genre books and movies, World of Warcraft. I draw inspiration from everything =)

How many people work with/for you?
I have a great design team but I don’t have anyone working ‘for’ me =)

What’s your guilty pleasure?
Sweets, hip hop and gothic/steampunk flavored video games lol

What was your favorite subject in school…?
English, Social Studies and Art. I love learning so I can’t pick just one =P

If you were getting a tattoo… what would it be?
I have two in mind, one a heart with wings for my mom, the other an art nouveau style celestial goddess.

If you were reincarnated…who would you have been in a former life?
One of my first internet aliases was “Cleopatrawasuglybutpowerful” so I’ll go with Cleopatra lol.
I think Shirley MacLaine claims to have been her in a past life, so I’m probably wrong haha.

What is your most popular item in the store/shop?
Well, this one has been the most downloaded:

But she was free, so if I disregard free or discounted images it would be a tie between these two:

What’s your favorite craftroom/business supply or tool that you couldn’t live without?
My Wacom tablet. I mean I have had to live without it before, but I hated it!

What’s your favorite hobby when you want to relax
Coloring, reading, walking.

What should be written on your gravestone when you die?
Finally, she walks on the shores of Tír na nÓg.
(Though I don’t actually want to be buried lol)

How long does the average design/art work take from concept to final product?
It definitely varies, but I would say on average – 5 or 6 hours to concept sketch, rough draft, final, ‘inking’, and coloring with Copics.

What do you love most about all the people you meet through your work?
I meet a lot of crafters and have found that they are some of the most kind-hearted, generous folks I’ve ever known. Absolutely lovely people.

Steam Punk New Release Sunday Blog Hop

What a fab  new release we have at Scrapper’s Delights and a fun blog hop full of really cool projects.  I am so looking forward to playing with these.  This is my DT piece for the blog hop.  I wanted to try something a bit different from my regular “Steampunk” with these.  I found this fabulous quote ….unfortunately it didn’t have a name on it, so I can’t credit the author.

But I love this quote …. I am 46, still chasing my dreams… and you bet I am still wearing my heels lol.

It’s a standing joke with my Oby because I wore my 4 inch heels till the day I gave birth to my son.  I think I was the happiest pregnant woman that office ever saw lol.
Every time I have an appointment with my Oby, he comes in to the examining room and the first thing he looks for is my shoes/boots.  If he cant see them he shakes his head and tells me he is disappointed in me.. till I produce “them heels” lol.

Well what did you expect.. that I would have a normal Oby?    This is the guy who started singing Rhinestone cowboy as I delivered….just as he had promised. Yup, my favorite crazy Asian Oby Dr singing Rhinestone Cowboy.  If you have ever seen the movie Air Am, you will probably know why that was funny…. you kind a had to be there LOL.

I’ve  been wearing boots like these since I was about 16 and in my Goth /Biker days.  Ah fun, fun times !! lol  That is what I love about images like these….memories….and personalization.  So many 80’s kiddies in here…. come on, I know some of you wore these boots and rocked  out to all the hair bands too lol.

boots_DT_wmdedOk ok enough wandering down memory lane…. But, are you humming Bon Jovi  Living on a prayer yet? lol…

Sooo details… details… let me see
