Fairy Topper Notebook

I made this cute Fairy topper design  Fairy on Fancy Background No.3 into a notebook cover for my friends little girl.  It’s a full 8.5 x 11 comb bound scribble pad  and I will add her name to the scroll on the front.  Another gorgeous Lyn Simms design for the little fairy lovers  in our lives.

You can find this file in various cutting machine formats at CraftsUprint

KennyK and my ‘AHA moment’

Now I know there are a few of you who  already started humming  “Take on me”  ….even if only in your head.  Admit it, you know the song and  you secretly wished some hot guy would drag you off  into the pages of a  magazine.. or hot steamy romance book.

* whistles innocently.

Or if you are one of  our male crafters.. maybe you want to be him instead and drag some cute chick off to woo with your sketchings. but that just sounds like the weird dude at the park… so … let’s not go there lol.

Well…  here we are 30 years later.. and we’re not watching those sketchy scenes anymore. Most of us are either drawing them, or coloring them.  I have to say, Morton Harket still looks pretty damned hot… I saw some recent pics and he scrubs up pretty good LOL.

Anywho, I digress… back to the project

and what a project this one was! as you can probably tell it’s inspired by…. AHA …. yup I had my AHA moment.   Now  this one was a doozy;  it was quite a process just to get to this stage and I have a feeling by the time I finish matting and framing this guy, there is gonna be a second white mat  with some comic strip style layout  surrounding him and his black mat board.  I guess we shall see…. one day.

I’ll show  more details below.. but the quick run through on this one…

Canson Mixed Media Paper, colored with Chameleons, over color with Crayola Color Escapes Pencils… scanned, reprinted, background depth using a  black Zig Scroll & Brush pen.. additional shading and outline definition  done with a charcoal gray Color Escapes… signed .. matted.. BINGO

I find it useful to take progress pics as I work, so I can sit back and look at them  on my comp as I drink my tea and take a break.  For some reason it really helps me look at it with a more critical eye  and helps me spot areas I may need to work on, better than looking at the actual project.  It also gives me a more accurate view of projects that are meant to be viewed at a distance…. like  framed art etc.  When I get up and walk off to do something…. I find propping up my work and leaving it in full view  for a few hours, or days helps when I feel I am just not quite seeing the problem…. but I know it’s just not quite right.

I have a tendency to ruin  projects by not knowing when to stop “trying” *sigh…. so I try and give myself breaks at strategic points, to  avoid that happening so often.

What I really love about this particular project, is that the various stages of progression gave me some ideas  on other  things I wanted to try with this concept.  One of them being a version with only the skin colored in markers and pencil and the rest black and white/graycale.  I think that one will look really cool.

Anyway enough of my ramblings, let’s face it…..I just like to goof around and try things. Some work, some don’t….sometimes they all work for you… for different reasons and you have to decide which one to go with first. The only thing that matters is having fun and trying new things and NOT trying to compete with other crafters and constantly comparing your work to others. when it  comes to art and creativity…. the rule is

…. THERE ARE NO RULES !!

….so here are the progress snapshots and the final  project  matted and ready to frame…or maybe double matted THEN framed later lol…and some product links for anyone interested.

I printed light by adjusting the layer opacity in my graphics program on Canson Mix Media paper and then colored with Chameleon skin tone marker NU00.  I know I know.. one shouldn’t color with markers on papers designed for  other media…. but I have refills …and I can, because I want to …. I am such a rebel !!!   LOL remember THERE ARE NO RULES!!

I would be lying if I said I recall exactly what colors I used at this stage.  I know the blue for the pants was BL4 Cornflower Blue.. but I used a mix of grays  for the hat, leather straps and chaps.  One of which I am pretty sure was  the CG8  Cool Gray from the original 22 pen set  and the others  came from the gray tones  5 pack.  Background was sketched in with pencil.

I tried detailing the outline with a fab new pen I got just before Christmas, it’s called a Bimoji Marker and this is the fine tip one… and I really like the look of it on  the test piece on the right.  Comp crashed and I got a print fail… so decided to use it as a test sheet.  but it wasn’t quite gellin with what I had in my head for this particular piece.  But this is definitely something I am going to  use on another project, I love this sketchy look with impact.

In the end I compromised and did the detailing and outlines with a charcoal gray pencil. because I printed this as a soft print with light lines, It  needed to be brought out in the coloring instead.  This is the first time I have really tried the no outlines /soft outlines style… and I actually like it… for SOME projects.  I think it really depends on the individual project and images as to whether pen, or pencil works best.

One last quick note… since I obscured the background with this sketchy AHA inspired  look, don’t forget to add your artists signature back in somewhere on your piece.  Mine is tucked up under the mat, but will also be added to the back on a label with details.  Since this piece may well end up as an Abandoned Art Project at some point, I want to make sure credit is assigned to  the artist… the one and only KennyK.

………. and so, here he is “Tex” by KennyK

This is one of my mystery DT projects from the January 2017 Crafty Awesomeness Challenge which you are more than welcome to come enter.

Decoupage Wall Plaque “Baby Boy Blues”

I was playing around with ideas again.. you know how that goes LOL.

I picked up some of these cheap wood blanks at Walmart… I only went in for milk honest.

2 gallons of milk and $50 of craft supplies later…. haha ..oops…and I had some fun stuff to play with for me and the lil man.

Now cute isn’t really my thing, but I still like to have a play around with ideas and  try new things…and sometimes I get a does of the “cuties”.  I think that is how you learn what you like and don’t like; sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t…. but you will never know unless you try.

What I loved about this one was the soft Wedgewood style color Palette ….what I didn’t love…. sticking on what felt like a gazillion tiny flowers and  pearl cabochons.  But I like how  the flower clusters turned out on it…it’s a very handy die, I just wish it did more than one at a time.  I can see a few places I think I probably should have added a few stray flowers, but it’s so easy to  go too far and OVERKILL strikes  lol.

Anywho here she is, this is my  New Release project for Cute As A Button “My Baby Boy” . The idea would work with a photo instead of a digi image too.

Marvelous Molds – cake decor, polymer, plaster and more

Some of you may have heard me  talking about a desire to start working with resin again.. and you may have already seen Playdoh projects and the like on here in the past.  I was so excited to accidentally stumble across this site when I was updating affiliate info on the blog.  CHECK these out…..

mm-web-logo-200px

Now these are  Food Grade Silicone molds…. but they can  be used for plaster, soap, wax and a bunch more crafting  media.  They can withstand 400 degree heat, so work with allsorts of materials.

One of the really cool features of these molds that I liked a lot was the cutting edge built in to the design and the wide array of designs and texture plates available, which would be great for my playdoh, polymer and plaster projects.  If you enjoy crafting with 3D embellishments…  check these out.  I know a bunch of you do mixed media pieces and upcycle and re purpose pieces in a variety of media.

I picked out a few of my personal favorites to show you, but you really have to go check them out for yourself.  Whether you are a cake decorator… and we have a few of you ladies too in my various Facebook Groups and contacts, or you are a mixed media artist, jewelry maker, modeler or whatever…. these are definitely worth a look.
As soon as I have some spare  money, hopefully after Christmas…. I’m grabbing some of these and a new supply of Tap Plastics resin.  Woot… so excited to find really cool molds  to play with.

The video on the page I am linking to is worth a watch even if you aren’t a cake decorator… it  has some useful information and tips on it that apply to any use.

Happy Mail….Spice up your life with some “zig-a-zig-ah”

Soooo…. all you closet 90’s Spice Girl fans… are you singing yet? lol…. was too cool of a post title to pass up on that one lol..and so appropriate…I had the ultimate “Zig a Zig Ah” moment when I opened this one up.

As mentioned in the previous post about Gina Marie dies… I had some tough choices to make with my little spending spree .. this time the Zigs won out.  That is not to say the Expanded Chameleon Pens set is off the table…. it’s just  biding its time hahaha.

So regulars on the blog are well aware of my love of Zig Kurecolor pens  .. I only have a handful of colors out of the 130 something color range. Have.. let me rephrase that, HAD…. only a handful….I now have TWO handfuls lol.  As some of you are also aware, I do review products for ImageAbility now and then and they also sponsor prizes on the blog…but let me  just say I do also buy my own and they get  treat just the same.  What you get is my opinion based on my preferences and my style and my experience when using them…nothing more, nothing less.

This time I scored both my own purchase… and a few extras kindly  added in by the CraftingAbility  team.. thanks guys  🙂 I love surprises in my happy mail.

…so the important stuff….what did I get?  Well for starters I picked up 14 new colors in  my Kurecolor pens.  Now for those of you who haven’t seen these in previous posts, these are not the refillable version… these are the Zig Manga Kurecolor pen version with the fine tips… but .. between you and me.. you can refill them and they are the same colors as the refillables… so you can order refills too.  I love the tips on these, the fact that they are slimline and that they fit in the Cricut adapters I have, should I ever feel the need. ….so this is my pen of choice when it comes to the Zig Kurecolors.  Although these do not have replaceable tips… technically.. lol..I find the Kurecolor tips to be VERY durable.. so that is not really a big concern of mine.

  • Bimoji Marker pen – fine tip
  • Mangaka Marker Set – 3 tip sizes. these were a very welcome suprise as I use these type of detailer pens a lot. and this set has 3 tip sizes… so I will definitely be playing with these.
  • Another surprise in my packet was this Twin Black tips set – if you ever saw the Memory system kit I have… these are the same tips selection..but all black. Scroll, brush, fine, writer, calligraphy and chisel.  Each pen has two tips..either two of the same in 2 sizes, or 2 different tips. Definitley a welcome surprise for someone like me who likess to draw and write on the Cricut.  these have  definitley been  the better pens as far as durability goes for that purpose as the tips don’t seem to be affected at all, unlike other pens I have used on it.
  • Then we have one of my favorites…if you ever saw my post on embossing pens you have seen one of these. When I got mine I could only get my hands on a dual tip fine & chisel pen… so this time I ordered the writer as it has two sizes of writing tips.  What I love about these and a lot of the Zig pens is that they work perfectly with my Amy Chomas Pen & Marker Adapters and are awesome for embossing on my Cricut.  ImageAbility decided I needed to brush up on my hand writing skills I think because Steve kindly upgraded me to include the full set of Zig Embossing Pens.  The full set includes the writing tips, the calligraphy tips as well as the fine and chisel and the scroll and brush tips.  I guess I best get practicing LOL
  • Black Fabricolor twin tip Pen

Now I couldn’t place an order without  grabbing some Photo Tape Refills.. I LOVE this tape runner.  My Xyron Megarunner is fabulous for most paper craft projects, but I find this Zig Photo Tape to just have a little extra something, something for things like the foam sheets… and regulars know I love to pop my foam sheets on a lot of projects.

….also included in this image is a couple of different sizes of the 2 way glue.  I have the big applicator tip, but wanted to try out some of the smaller tips  too.

And something that has me very excited…. double sided tape.  Steve kindly threw in a reel of the commercial grade tape they use in another branch of the business after listening to me moan about wanting a really heavy duty tape for my foam  and needing something that came in wide reels.  It’s always handy to know a man who knows a man …. so I will be testing this out too.  I threw a quick 1 inch strip on a piece of card and foam and so far, as I can tell… I could probably stick myself off the ceiling with this stuff lol.  I need wide tape in big quantities at an affordable price… so 3 sheet packs just don’t cut it for me.  I have one other  reel I just ordered and should be here by Monday… I picked it up at a discount online and  it’s 6 inches wide.

It will be interesting to see how they compare since one is marketed for commercial use and one is marketed for craft use.  My biggest pet peeve is I really want it to  have release paper on both sides… but I guess I can always add my own secondary release paper to these rolls.  Stay tuned for updates on these tape reels later in the month if you have been looking for similar products.zig_adhesive
Then  I found the extra goodies I wasn’t expecting.. I found a canvas tote bag, which is perfect for the Fabricolor pen I ordered. And something   that had been mentioned in a recent email and was definitely of interest to me…. a ChalkFlex sheet and white wet erasable chalk marker.  Now this is a bit different to the original chalkboard vinyl I reviewed last year and have used in various projects since… this one isn’t black.  It’s a really deep slate gray and has a subtle texture to it.  Really looking forward to trying that one out.

zig_extras

almost forgot to include this one…. this is one of the wet erasable Chalk Pens, to go with the chalk board sheet.

….and there we have it… that is today’s happy mail from CraftingAbility.com and Cohas.com  ..time to get busy and have some playtime me thinks.  Stay tuned for more posts and projects and a closer look at some of these new pens in action.

Some products in this post were provided free of charge for review & project purposes.

Quick and Easy Sympathy Card & Another Die Giveaway

Ok, this one came together quicker than expected, so here is my sketch No 4 card for our Monthly Sketch Challenge over on the message board and it includes the Extra Credit for making a sympathy card. Now this is a Gazillion miles outside of my comfort zone… It’s way softer and more feminine than my usual typical style.  But as a friend told me, sometimes it’s good to step  out of your comfort zone.. so here it is.

Dies used Gina Marie stitched rectangle and a Gina Marie sympathy sentiment.  The sentiment was cut on a silver glitter card stock, the stitched die is  cut on 110lb card and popped with a foam rectangle behind.

Lace around the center is just some adhesive lace from a Joann grab bag last year. The lace down the side is from Walmart.

The silver rose is from the Michaels bargain racks. The front panel was also foam popped and mounted on a Recollections card base.

Zig Memory System Collection review

memsys48

First impressions of the Zig Memory System 48 piece Collection from CraftingAbility.com.

Seems like a pretty cool collection, nice variety of pen types nice packaging.

12 Calligraphy Markers

6 Journal and Title Markers
6 Scroll & Brush Markers
6 Brushables
3 Writer Chalk Pastels
3 Calligraphy Chalk Pastels

zig_memory_collection_cricut

Ok, I just jumped right in and threw in a writer pen…. when it comes to my Cricut, I am in for a penny, in for a pound as they say. No point in pussy footing around, it’s either going to work great… or it’s going to turn my nice new pen tips to smush.  Only one way to find out.

Ok, so initial  impressions…. these pens will not work in the Cricut Explore with the standard adapter.

They will however work perfectly using the Amy Chomas Marker adapter.

SCORE Brownie points for that one Zig.

daffy-dil

I’m sure we are all familiar with the poem “daffodil”  by William Wordsworth.

I picked this one because it was a well know verse and if I am honest… it suited my pen color preference. I am nothing if not honest and a realist.

If you are going to test a set of pens out.. the first one you pick is the one you are least likely to use.  That way if it gets smushed….it’s not such a big deal right!

So I picked the green writer, it’s not a color I am going to use to write on my cards on a regular basis… trust me!

Now the thing with this  decision making technique is…. guaranteed the one you smush and think is no big deal… is the one you want NEXT week.

But as luck would have it… these pens are built pretty dang tough.  I have had markers with broader tips than these…smush like a pancake after a sentence or two.  Not these… even using the fine tip end, 2 verses in and it is still as good as new.  SCORE Brownie points for that one Zig.

memorysys_doodle

I wasn’t joking when I said a quick squiggle 🙂

The Calligraphy markers have a chisel tip, flat and thin and I am excited to try those properly… I just had a quick squiggle with all of the pen types.  It’s been years since I tried anything like that, and I will probably suck… but I’ve got all winter to practice getting my handwriting skills back on course.. Texas is heading for a very wet and cold winter by all accounts.

I deliberately picked up products last month that I knew I needed to work on my skills with.. like coloring pens and watercolor paints… knowing this winter would be a great time to  get back into lost skills and develop new ones.

These pens will work in perfectly to other projects I have on my todo list… like my Recycled Playdoh Journal and card making.

All of the pens are dual tipped.  The brush and Scroll markers are interesting too.  The Scroll ones have a kind of forked tip, definitely looking forward to playing with those ones. The variety of tips and colors in this pack is pretty cool, definitely a good kit for people like me who want to try new techniques and ideas. It’s also a great kit for anyone who handwrites on papercrafts and needs a good mix at a decent price.  At the regular price, these pens work out at less than $2 a pop.. with the CraftingCircle Exclusive deal… you are talking just over $1.50 a pen… that’s a dang good deal.  We all know how much  it costs to build up our pen collections.

memorysys_chalk

One of my personal favorites right  now, the pastel chalk markers.. these are soo cool.  At first I thought I had misinterpreted the description of these pens and they weren’t intended for dark papers afterall.  But watch this video…. this is pretty damned cool. My creative director was on hand …. sorry LOL

memorysys_blendable

Now something cool I noticed on the box..in the top  left corner at the back.. is this…it says BLENDABLE.  Now Steve mentioned something about this and a video… so I shall get that information and post it in a comment later.

memorysys_mix
As you can see I got a bit distracted and just had to try those big chalk markers too…LOL

I just tested the Illumigraph and the giant orange marker with rubber stamps on the magnet and dark paper….  but enough of that, they will have their own post in a few days  🙂

VERDICT – I like these pens, I definitely need to brush up on my handwriting skills, too many years on computers has made me lazy. I’m looking forward to working with these over the winter months and hopefully I’ll be able to used these in our message board card challenges real soon. I found the scroll ones a bit tricky to use, but I am pretty sure that is more me than the pens, I just need to get used to playing with pens more than I have in recent years. Practice makes perfect right!

ImageAbility Review box

craftability_kit_2

Ok ladies and gents.. today’s “mystery” review box from ImageAbility.Inc.  is….

….  an assortment of products from the Ziggyboard.com and www.craftingability.com

I swear  Steve over at ImageAbility can read my mind sometimes… well maybe not so much when it comes to the big Orange marker….trying to throw me a challenge there??  but heh… I am sure I can find a use for that too *grin.  I’m always up for trying something outside of the box… no pun intended :p

This box contained:

Zig Memory System 48 piece Collection
Some slate blanks
3 marker pens
Magnetic chalk Board “Scraps”.

Now when Steve at ImageAbility says he is sending Scraps, or Seconds for me to play with…. they are not my idea of scraps lol.  His version of “I grabbed some scraps and threw them in your box”  is not what you would expect lol.  These are good size pieces  and his idea of “flawed…”  …I have bought retail products at full price with more flaws  LOL.  The same can be said for the 12×12 sheets of chalkboard vinyl… hell if they looked like seconds to me.  I can only imagine what the “good stuff” looks like if these are scraps and seconds !

magnetic

First of all let me tell you, this magnetic sheet cuts like a dream… super easy to cut on my cheapie little Recollections Paper trimmer I picked up a few weeks ago as a backup.  Squaring up my “scraps” was a no brainer.  I took one of the “smaller”  scraps..and when I say smaller.. we are talking about 8 inches x 24 ish (…that’s some scraps there LOL )

It had one tiny flaw on the end which was easily trimmed off… and to be honest, I probably wouldn’t have even bothered if I was planning to use it as a backing for sticker magnets. It was a surface scratch…. nothing more.  But, I was testing out the ease of cutting and so I trimmed it off.  This also comes in a whiteboard finish; so a useful tool for keeping your projects organized when you have a lot of things on the go, not to mention it makes a great Magnetic note  board for the kitchen, office or garage.  Retail sheets come in a variety of sizes to suit all needs. Heck I want to decorate an entire wall in this stuff. If only I didn’t live in an apartment  LOL.

dies

..I can tell you now I am seriously considering running out to Home Depot with my pieces and finding a sheet of metal to attach to the end of my craft carts, so I can use this on there to hold my thin dies.  I so badly need a better way to store the ones I have.. this would be perfect. My carts don’t have solid ends.  I am pretty sure hubby doesn’t want to wake up and find our Fridge and freezer decorated in my dies.

If you have a solid surface to mount it, Ziggyboard also have flexible steel which feels like the regular magnetic sheet..and magnets stick to it, as opposed to this sheet which is Magnetic and sticks to steel.

On a side note.. all you Cricut users who have mats that are losing their sticky, www.craftingability.com have a  2 way glue stick that  should fix that problem.  I will let you know when I get mine and try it out on my nasty old mats.

slate

This slate is beautiful and I have it on good authority this is good old USA slate… not imported  🙂  I have always loved slate.. so  I was super excited to see these pieces in my box.  Probably far more excited than the mail man was haha.

Included was 2 coaster size pieces just under 4 inch squared, a 4×8 piece and a 5.5 x 8 ish piece.  Sizes may vary slightly obviously, this is a natural product.. handsplit New England slate.. LOVE IT !

zig_pens
Next we have the 3 markers … the jumbo 15mm Orange Zig Posterman Waterproof which at first glance looks like it could be hiding pepper spray LOL
The 6mm light blue Zig Posterman Wet Wipe
…and finally the 6mm White Zig Illumigraph.

I’ll go into more detail on what they can be used on and  their specific uses etc  when I use them.. but if you can’t wait for that, feel free to hop on over to the Ziggyboard.com site and check them out.  Quick rundown.. the orange and blue are good for  chalkboard, windows, mirrors, ceramics and the white Illumigraph works on chalkboard, windows and lightboards..all have an ETC. after the list.. so I am sure there are more.

memsys48
….and the Piece de Resistance
The Zig Memory system 48 Collection.
this set inlcudes:

12 Calligraphy Markers
12 Writer Markers
6 Journal and Title Markers
6 Scroll & Brush Markers
6 Brushables
3 Writer Chalk Pastels
3 Calligraphy Chalk Pastels
Now the big test for the pens and Magnetic chalkboard will be

…. can the Cricut Explore cut this magnetic sheet and write with these pens?

I can tell you already the pens won’t fit in the regular adapter  that comes with your Cricut Explore (original), but if you have an aftermarket adapter, like the Amy Chomas  marker adapter… they fit perfectly.  I can’t vouch for the Air, or One machines, because I don’t have one.  But I believe the Air and original Explores are the same,  unless anyone knows differently.  And I have a feeling the Explore One has a different pen system …?

So… the big question… where to start??   so many cool things to try, which one do I play first?

I guess you will find out tonight which one I chose…. and stay tuned. The CraftingCircle Exclusive discount code will be posted tonight too.  This is just a teaser so you know what to look out for.

ccdiscbw

I can give you a hint.. it’s an “odd” number,  it’s over 20% and the code will be valid for ALL products on the www.craftingability.com site…and we’re working on setting up a code for Ziggyboard.com too.   Why would you expect a “normal” anything from me ? of course it’s going to be an odd number…. so  have a look around www.craftingability.com and Ziggyboard.com and get ready to grab some deals with this exclusive discount.

All you pro crafters  who do shows, or have a shop should definitely check out the  Ziggyboard  site, they have a lot of good business products too.

This code will be valid through December 31 2015, or while supplies last ….and if you are eyeing up this pen set, I can tell you quantities are limited.
