Bugaboo Sketch Challenge inspired notebook

I was cruising along doing my thing when I ran across the  new Bugaboo Stamps latest “Stella Says Sketch Challenge”.  Now I am not a huge fan of sketch challenges..I like to do my own thing.. but once in a while a sketch will catch my eye and I’m like

“hmm.. yup..I can work with that! “

….and this  was one of them.  This is the Sketch for Challenge 502 which runs till February 6th.  Now I am kind of used to our sketch challenge on the message board..which is VERY relaxed as far as “rules goes”  and very open to artistic license. They are an inspiration/ suggestion not an absolute LOL.. so everyone is used to me skipping  the sentiments section on my cards and projects.

Sometimes they just don’t need one, other times I want to leave it  till I know who the recipient is… or let’s face it.. it’s me!! Sometimes it’s just not something I should probably post pictures of for the masses lol.
In this case, it just doesn’t need one… it’s a notebook, not a card.  I just wanted to have some fun with these Bugaboo Stamps I have in my collection and practice  blending techniques with my Chameleon Pens.  I will enter it any way, just to show it off for anyone who cares to  check it out…and to show a bit of support for one of our Sponsors Challenges.
Anywho here is my fun little notebook, made from scratch using a Fellowes Comb Binder and Plastic Combs.  The images used are Hedgehog Flower and Mini Set- Spring Flower Blocks which is a set of 6.  Colored with Chameleon Pens on Canson Mix Media the notebook was made using Recollections card for the cover and the inside pages.

I was considering laminating the covers, but decided against it.  The center panel was layers of black & white matching card stock and I used Zig Kuretake Photo Tape Runner for my adhesive. and the  Hedgehog was also printed on white, then colored and Die cut using one of my newer Gina Marie Designs Dies “MINI HEART LACE SQUARE DIE SET”

This one  may or may not join my abandoned art project bucket… it’s kinda cute and I may keep it.

Be sure to enter your Bugaboo Stamps Projects in their Challenges..at “Catch the Bug Challenge Spot”

and of course our brand new one that started this month “Bugaboo Crafty Challenge”.  It’s a monthly prize challenge that starts on the 15th of each month for Bugaboo Stamp projects

.. and then of course you can also enter it in the “Crafty Awesomeness Challenge” here on the blog too, which is an anything goes and starts on the 1st of each month.

KennyK and my ‘AHA moment’

Now I know there are a few of you who  already started humming  “Take on me”  ….even if only in your head.  Admit it, you know the song and  you secretly wished some hot guy would drag you off  into the pages of a  magazine.. or hot steamy romance book.

* whistles innocently.

Or if you are one of  our male crafters.. maybe you want to be him instead and drag some cute chick off to woo with your sketchings. but that just sounds like the weird dude at the park… so … let’s not go there lol.

Well…  here we are 30 years later.. and we’re not watching those sketchy scenes anymore. Most of us are either drawing them, or coloring them.  I have to say, Morton Harket still looks pretty damned hot… I saw some recent pics and he scrubs up pretty good LOL.

Anywho, I digress… back to the project

and what a project this one was! as you can probably tell it’s inspired by…. AHA …. yup I had my AHA moment.   Now  this one was a doozy;  it was quite a process just to get to this stage and I have a feeling by the time I finish matting and framing this guy, there is gonna be a second white mat  with some comic strip style layout  surrounding him and his black mat board.  I guess we shall see…. one day.

I’ll show  more details below.. but the quick run through on this one…

Canson Mixed Media Paper, colored with Chameleons, over color with Crayola Color Escapes Pencils… scanned, reprinted, background depth using a  black Zig Scroll & Brush pen.. additional shading and outline definition  done with a charcoal gray Color Escapes… signed .. matted.. BINGO

I find it useful to take progress pics as I work, so I can sit back and look at them  on my comp as I drink my tea and take a break.  For some reason it really helps me look at it with a more critical eye  and helps me spot areas I may need to work on, better than looking at the actual project.  It also gives me a more accurate view of projects that are meant to be viewed at a distance…. like  framed art etc.  When I get up and walk off to do something…. I find propping up my work and leaving it in full view  for a few hours, or days helps when I feel I am just not quite seeing the problem…. but I know it’s just not quite right.

I have a tendency to ruin  projects by not knowing when to stop “trying” *sigh…. so I try and give myself breaks at strategic points, to  avoid that happening so often.

What I really love about this particular project, is that the various stages of progression gave me some ideas  on other  things I wanted to try with this concept.  One of them being a version with only the skin colored in markers and pencil and the rest black and white/graycale.  I think that one will look really cool.

Anyway enough of my ramblings, let’s face it…..I just like to goof around and try things. Some work, some don’t….sometimes they all work for you… for different reasons and you have to decide which one to go with first. The only thing that matters is having fun and trying new things and NOT trying to compete with other crafters and constantly comparing your work to others. when it  comes to art and creativity…. the rule is

….so here are the progress snapshots and the final  project  matted and ready to frame…or maybe double matted THEN framed later lol…and some product links for anyone interested.

I printed light by adjusting the layer opacity in my graphics program on Canson Mix Media paper and then colored with Chameleon skin tone marker NU00.  I know I know.. one shouldn’t color with markers on papers designed for  other media…. but I have refills …and I can, because I want to …. I am such a rebel !!!   LOL remember THERE ARE NO RULES!!

I would be lying if I said I recall exactly what colors I used at this stage.  I know the blue for the pants was BL4 Cornflower Blue.. but I used a mix of grays  for the hat, leather straps and chaps.  One of which I am pretty sure was  the CG8  Cool Gray from the original 22 pen set  and the others  came from the gray tones  5 pack.  Background was sketched in with pencil.

I tried detailing the outline with a fab new pen I got just before Christmas, it’s called a Bimoji Marker and this is the fine tip one… and I really like the look of it on  the test piece on the right.  Comp crashed and I got a print fail… so decided to use it as a test sheet.  but it wasn’t quite gellin with what I had in my head for this particular piece.  But this is definitely something I am going to  use on another project, I love this sketchy look with impact.

In the end I compromised and did the detailing and outlines with a charcoal gray pencil. because I printed this as a soft print with light lines, It  needed to be brought out in the coloring instead.  This is the first time I have really tried the no outlines /soft outlines style… and I actually like it… for SOME projects.  I think it really depends on the individual project and images as to whether pen, or pencil works best.

One last quick note… since I obscured the background with this sketchy AHA inspired  look, don’t forget to add your artists signature back in somewhere on your piece.  Mine is tucked up under the mat, but will also be added to the back on a label with details.  Since this piece may well end up as an Abandoned Art Project at some point, I want to make sure credit is assigned to  the artist… the one and only KennyK.

………. and so, here he is “Tex” by KennyK

This is one of my mystery DT projects from the January 2017 Crafty Awesomeness Challenge which you are more than welcome to come enter.

Crayola Color Escapes 72 count Pencil set ..SCORE !!

Well….I did it, I ordered a set…. well actually …….I ordered TWO sets  lol

I spotted these a few months ago and shared the info on here and Facebook… but at the time, I didn’t have spare funds to try these out.  Well I decided I was going to jump in and grab a set and since they were priced lower than I remembered and they offer free shipping on orders over $30… I grabbed a second set.  Oh and Thank You Crayola for the 10% discount you emailed me while I  was  filling my cart lol.

I am not a brand snob…. I currently color with CraZart pencils, which cost a whopping $8 or so at Walmart..AND I LOVE THEM.  So I guess a set of “Grown up “Crayolas is a step up and progress.  Who am I kidding, I will still color with my CraZart pencils…. I love them lol.  I am the queen of Mix and Match Media, these will play very nicely together I am sure LOL

But I now have another 72 pencils to add to my coloring  repertoire. It will be interesting to see how these  handle the specialty papers I like to use with the CraZart pencils, like the velvet paper.

So if you are just starting out with adult coloring, or crafting, have older kids who love to color and wanted something a little more “classy” looking than the regular ..need a crafty gift. Maybe you just wanted to try something new, but without the hefty price tag of some of the “artist” brands of pencils * rolleyes

Check these out… they are, or were as far as I am aware only available at Crayola.com or Amazon.com and to be entirely honest, I was half expecting Amazon to be the better deal…. WRONG. …  not this time. When ordering 2 sets,  and by some hocus pocus and trickery….of which I am still not entirely sure lol….  I managed to get both sets for a grand total of…..

Hahaha.. nope not gonna tell you, go check it out for yourself….but it’s a great deal.   Add 2 sets to your cart and if you get the same deal I did.. with free shipping and the 10% discount code they emailed to me..and the “?? where the heck did that come from discount”  I paid less than $35  including taxes and shipping for two sets  🙂

…and the regular price is $22.49 per set + taxes + $6.49 in shipping on orders less than $30.. still a fab price.

Free Shipping with $50+ Crayola order

Super excited to get my hands on these and have a play….:)  I have been wanting a set for months and every time I have some spare money, they were out of stock… but not anymore !!!  WOOT

For those of you who prefer Amazon because you get special  bonus points etc.  Here is a link to the Amazon Deal which is  probably a better option when you are only buying one set and have Prime and/ or an Amazon Points card. The Crayola deal with Free Shipping and no taxes is also available through this link.

Spotlight Series Day 1: Amanda Byron – Faery Ink

Who are you ?  Amanda S. Byron, Faery Ink

Store: FaeryInk.com
Facebook Group: Faery Ink Group

Where are you ?  Ashland, Ohio, USA

When did you first start drawing/designing seriously?
I’ve drawn since I was very little. I sold drawings of Jessica Rabbit in 4th grade and ‘bubble letter’ names with flowers and such in middle school lol. I started selling web graphics and drawing tutorials in 2003, digital stamps in 2013. I’ll let you know if I start taking anything seriously haha 😉

What was the first product you ever had for sale?
As far as digital stamps, I made a bunch of stuff to put up before I opened shop. I like to prepare ahead usually.

What is your favorite piece in the whole store?

That would be like choosing between my kids lol. Instead I’ll pick one I really like but have never seen used:

Who is your inspiration/muse?
My kids, my little nieces, nature, mythology, Art Nouveau, Mucha, Waterhouse, books like the Discworld series, Alice in Wonderland, Chronicles of Narnia, Grimms’ Faerytales, Tim Burton, 80s cartoons like Rainbow Brite, Strawberry Shortcake and He-Man (lol), sci-fi/fantasy genre books and movies, World of Warcraft. I draw inspiration from everything =)

How many people work with/for you?
I have a great design team but I don’t have anyone working ‘for’ me =)

What’s your guilty pleasure?
Sweets, hip hop and gothic/steampunk flavored video games lol

What was your favorite subject in school…?
English, Social Studies and Art. I love learning so I can’t pick just one =P

If you were getting a tattoo… what would it be?
I have two in mind, one a heart with wings for my mom, the other an art nouveau style celestial goddess.

If you were reincarnated…who would you have been in a former life?
One of my first internet aliases was “Cleopatrawasuglybutpowerful” so I’ll go with Cleopatra lol.
I think Shirley MacLaine claims to have been her in a past life, so I’m probably wrong haha.

What is your most popular item in the store/shop?
Well, this one has been the most downloaded:

But she was free, so if I disregard free or discounted images it would be a tie between these two:

What’s your favorite craftroom/business supply or tool that you couldn’t live without?
My Wacom tablet. I mean I have had to live without it before, but I hated it!

What’s your favorite hobby when you want to relax
Coloring, reading, walking.

What should be written on your gravestone when you die?
Finally, she walks on the shores of Tír na nÓg.
(Though I don’t actually want to be buried lol)

It definitely varies, but I would say on average – 5 or 6 hours to concept sketch, rough draft, final, ‘inking’, and coloring with Copics.

What do you love most about all the people you meet through your work?
I meet a lot of crafters and have found that they are some of the most kind-hearted, generous folks I’ve ever known. Absolutely lovely people.

Quick and Easy Sympathy Card & Another Die Giveaway

Ok, this one came together quicker than expected, so here is my sketch No 4 card for our Monthly Sketch Challenge over on the message board and it includes the Extra Credit for making a sympathy card. Now this is a Gazillion miles outside of my comfort zone… It’s way softer and more feminine than my usual typical style.  But as a friend told me, sometimes it’s good to step  out of your comfort zone.. so here it is.

Dies used Gina Marie stitched rectangle and a Gina Marie sympathy sentiment.  The sentiment was cut on a silver glitter card stock, the stitched die is  cut on 110lb card and popped with a foam rectangle behind.

Lace around the center is just some adhesive lace from a Joann grab bag last year. The lace down the side is from Walmart.

The silver rose is from the Michaels bargain racks. The front panel was also foam popped and mounted on a Recollections card base.

And now for the fun part…Scrapbook Outlet kindly sent me  this sentiment die to play with… and a second  one for one lucky blog reader.

I’m afraid  this is a US only  giveaway, sorry Internationals…

Message Board Monthly Sketch Challenge Card #1

This is my Card for Sketch No.1 for February 2016 Monthly Sketch Challenge over on our message board.

Monthly Sketch Challenge Card #1

Stamp is a freebie from the Bloobel Stamps Facebook Group – Bekkah Bloom

I like these images; they are just a bit different and quirky..and as someone mentioned on the group, they have a Tim Burton feel to them. So when they offered up the Freebie I grabbed the chance to try coloring one of these :) colored with a mix of Chameleon, Zig Memory System Writers, Zig Kurecolor and Ranger Distress pens .. image was print and cut on the Cricut Explore.

Frame was cut with the new Lil’Inker Design dies… sorry still trying to find just the right cut pad combo for these, mine are not standard *grin.. so this particular set is not perfect… but the quirky image suited some quirky stitching to go with the quirky angle of the wavy foam pad…. so I chose this test frame instead of a “perfect” one. You may notice everything is a bit off center… that is actually deliberate…if you haven’t noticed by now..I’m a bit quirky myself lol.

Rhinestones are the nail bling I bought last year and they are set in circles embossed in the foam pad.. with…. a pen lid. Heh..whatever works.. right!

This post contains some affiliate links :)

January 2016 final Bi weekly challenge #2 Sketch

As you may have read we are changing the bi-weekly sketch challenge to a monthly challenge like the others… so to round out the rest of January our host, NanaDonna provided us with 3 sketches to work from.  Here is my #2 sketch  it is a Tuesday Morning sketch...if you like this sketch, both Tuesday Morning and Crafting Circle Message Board are using it for current challenges..so come play 🙂

Card Base is from a Multicolored Recollections pack ( Michaels )

Image is “Besties Garden Fancy Pants Dreaming Scan13” By Sherri Baldy  .. check her out she has soooo many awesome cute images of these “Besties”

Image is printed on 110lb Card Stock and cut out with a circular Die. A smaller circular foam pad is attached behind that for height..and then the larger diameter circle is also a circular die cut foam pad in pink. Because these pads are adhesive…it makes it easier to glue them face to face and use the adhesive against the card stock, and stops that wet warp from the glues :)

The lacy strip is a Martha Stewart border punch on SEI Coconut white velvet and has a “Recollection green gingham” paper strip over the top

The image was colored a few weeks ago and has been in my practice sheet pile …..colored with a mix of Chameleon and Zig Memory System markers and the finished card was paired with a contrasting envelope from my collection of colors.
