Adventures in Resin

Some of you may have heard me mention earlier in the year that I had wanted to get some more embedding resin, I haven’t had any in years and its a fun thing to do.  Well I got some a few months back and  we had a quick play with it just to get a refresher for mommy  and make sure I had molds that would work  and a good mix ratio.

Well instead of buying specific embedding resin molds, I decided to have a play with some of the silicon baking and confectionery molds. I thought they might be easier for the little guy to unload than the traditional stiff molds… plus if I am honest I have had my eye on molds from one of my affiliates Marvelous Molds for a while… and for this purpose too lol. Even though they are technically designed for cake decorators, they do work for other crafts…. so I figured if the cheap ones worked… these fancy molds  from Marvelous molds are sure to work.  If you missed my previous post about these molds, you can find it here Marvelous Molds – cake decor, polymer, plaster and more .  I stumbled across this one day when I was doing updated links and had to  sign up, they have such fab designs and these molds will work for so many different craft materials… not just cake making.

300 X 250px
I had forgotten how much fun embedding resin can be… we decided to start  off simple so me and  lil Man D  mixed up a batch… I say we..when I really mean me.  He got to choose the  stuff that went in it though…  and we ended up with some Oceanic type glitter.  It’s very hard to photograph… but looks really cool.. think mermaids..or fishies.

And we picked out one of the molds… yeah can you tell who picked this one?  lol.  It’s a really cool little jigsaw puzzle mold which I think we will be using quite a lot.  Wait till you see all the other fun silicon  molds we have waiting to get played with… it’s going to be so much fun seeing what the little guy comes up with as far as ideas on objects to embed.

If you have never tried embedding resin, it’s definitely something to add to  your list.  My personal preference is resin from a company in Cali, called Tap Plastics. But if you just want to get something NOW and have a play, you can also find embedding resin and the necessary Catalyst.. I say NECESSARY as sometimes people do not realize you have to buy a catalyst too…at Michaels as well as some very affordable silicon molds in the cake and candy making section.

anywho… just a quick teaser of things to come .. Here are our glitzy Jigsaw shapes that will be getting turned into key rings and such and sent out or abandoned as part of our abandoned art  projects.

I got really lucky a while back and found something in clearance at Michaels that made my day.. would you believe I found a silicon mold for making ..BANGLES.  Can’t wait to try that one out with the little guy too.

I also spotted this one online, but haven’t found it in store yet so I may have to order this one for him.  My son is a huge Lego fan, so this would be great for our resin and plaster projects.

…and we did grab a  set of these square molds too.. a large 6 mold set with 3 inch squares and a set of 12 1.5 inch squares.

To be honest there were so many cool molds and even though they were on offer, we had to be good.   So the lil man picked out the ones he wanted and mommy will get the ones she wants later.

Now we just have to decide what to put in them… sadly I don’t have what I really wanted to use any more.  Last time I played with resin I had a brand of shrinky dink that if baked just right and you caught it before it bonded together… the top surface would separate from the base leaving this clear printed layer and it was perfect for embedding printed designs seamlessly.  The shrinky dink I have now is different.  But I have other ideas to experiment with  that I didn’t get to try last time I had resin… so I am not going to be  short of fun things to try with the lil man.

Between the huge plaster of paris bucket and the embedding resin and all these fun molds.. I think the lil man and I will have plenty of fun projects ahead.  He just started to experiment with mix media projects… and this is perfect for those and all the fun Steampunk projects I like to do… so many possibilities!! so many unique embellishments to be had!

Bonus ….Custom cut frames with Gina Marie Dies!

Time to get busy and knock out some sample combos.. these dies are going to be so much fun.  They are fabulous as intended with the in and out cuts; but they are even better when you start doubling them up to make frames

… and even better when you start making combos.
I had a quick play with some of my dies and came up with this one which I really like.  These frames are made up of :

MINI HEART LACE SQUARE DIE SET – GINA MARIE DESIGNS

and  the

DOT STUDS ON BOTH SIDES OF CUTTING LINE SQUARE – GINA MARIE DESIGNS

and then this image shows all THREE cuts
…and here is a sneaky peek at another combo…so stay tuned for more of these fun frames.  I wonder how many combos I can come up with without ordering any more new dies lol.  Although there are a few I might just have to grab to expand my frames capabilities lol.  These were made using my We R Memory Keepers Genius Ultimate Magnetic Platform on my Sizzix Big Shot

KennyK “Sexy Cupid” Gift Box

I was having a moment…!!! lol

I wanted to play with the new Mambi sheets that I picked up in the grab bag I mentioned in a previous haul post..soooo

This is the Mambi Paper, on a  cardboard box, one of the ones you pick up at the craft store to decorate. It  has Kenny K’s “Sexy Cupid” printed and then colored with Chameleons Pens.. and then die cut with a Gina Marie Designs die, “mini heart lace square set”.  I added smaller matching square panels to all 4 sides and then had a scattering of hearts from a Fiskars border punch in reds and pinks.

I used Zig Photo Tape to attach the paper elements &  pink velvet ribbon and  Tombow aqua to attach the bows and rhinestones.

This is the 3rd of the mystery DT projects for the current Crafty Awesomeness Challenge which is sponsored by KennyK stamps  this month.  You still have a few days left to enter….so come on over

Finally got to set up my big portable draft table

Hubby’s Grandma is an interior designer and a couple of years ago she gave me her old portable draft table that she had when she was doing classes. She didn’t need it anymore and it had been sat in a corner gathering dust, so she thought I might be able to make use of it.  It’s big…which is great…. but I really didn’t have anywhere I could put it without taking up valuable space..so it sat in my closet instead lol.

Well ..I have a few wood projects I wanted to tackle and as some of you know, I live in an apt, so  no workshop any more. Pretty much no tools anymore either, dang but I miss my old crafty workshop back in the UK.  Anyways I finally bit the bullet and stopped “making do” without a bench.. I got a cheapie Black and Decker bench, cost me all of $30 at Walmart. I figured I could just fold it away in a closet when I wasn’t using it.

WRONG !!!

I put it together in the wee hours while everyone was asleep and  then had a genius moment… I could  use that as a base for the draft table… and just take the draft table off when I had wood projects to do… GENIUS..

I just dropped it in the corner of my bay window  so I have  some natural light.  ok so maybe not the most high tech fancy looking draft table.. but it works, it’s cheap and it can pack up in a closet at any time and doubles as a woodworking bench when needed.

It is also the perfect place to pop my WRMK Laser Square which I didn’t really have space to leave assembled…and my Bluetooth Cell Phone base.  Now I can make answer calls again when my lil man runs off with my cell phone to watch Youtube Kids in the bathroom lol. He’s all male, that kid will sit there for hours if you don’t make him get off the pot lol.

So now I have my work bench and a draft table and  a place with natural light to photograph projects AND a place for my Laser Square and  it didn’t cost the earth or take up a lot of room.
Happy clam .. now I just need to get rid of that dang Cat 5 cable and finish tidying up in here 🙂  Excuse the mess lol.
I still plan to use my little desktop easel I made  to do most of my coloring, but this is going to be really handy to have too.

New Gina Marie Dies haul

Well I couldn’t resist one more quick die haul before my little shopping spree for the year ended.. so I grabbed these. new_gmd_dec

I don’t have  a lot of masculine dies so the GONE FISHING DIES set was a definite  plus…. I have a friend with a husband who loves to fish and I am sure I can find some fun humorous sentiments to go with these.  He is terribly accident prone and has pretty much been rebuilt  more times than the Bionic man… so he has a sense of humor that matches my own lol.  Just as well really since he is such an easy EASY target haha.  Any man who can break  their pelvis while standing on a two foot wall fishing… just gotta learn to roll with the punchlines LOL.

He has been more trouble since he retired than ever…. who knows what he will get up to next. In this weeks saga… he is getting surgery on the finger he decided to chop off at the tip last week. *rolleyes. Rest assured,  all of the appropriate jokes have been distributed and his wife  has declared herself unwilling to scratch his butt for him if he chops anything else off lol.

Aint love Grand !!!  But we love him anyway… he’s like that 3 year old who gets into trouble and you give them the stern lecture, while trying  not to giggle at their antics. He’s my favorite A$$hat and I would be lost without my partner in crime when it comes to bad humor.

The SNOWFLAKE BORDER DIE 5.5 LONG border was just too cute to pass by

.. I love my frame sets, so had to grab at least one of these MINI HEART LACE SQUARE DIE SET ..and they kinda look  like 4 leaf clovers in this design too.. so perfect for St Patrick’s Day and good luck cards.

The FLOWER BRANCH DIE just caught my eye and I had to grab it..and then somehow.. the ORNAMENT & SHADOW DIE SET just fell in my packet * grin.

Now I just have to find time to  do some fun new projects with all this new stuff  🙂

Spotlight Series Day 10, Samantha – My Little Paper World

Who are you?

My name is Samantha – I started My Little Paper World early this year. I wanted to design some dies – I had an idea, so did some research, and went through the manufacturing process. I decided to use my blog name – because I liked the name and thought it would make a cute design logo.

Where are you?

South Australia! G’day Mate J

When did you first start drawing/designing seriously?

I’ve always been interested in Art/Craft but more so being creative. I have no design background, and I don’t have the patience or time (anymore) to draw. So I can honestly say that I started late last year when I decided to stick with it and figure out the design program (after many many tantrums!). I did a lot of Art in high school (20+ years ago now) though and loved it, and I’ve been making cards and scrapbooking for as long as I can remember. But this year is the first where I’ve thought about it seriously enough to create a final product.

What was the first product you ever had for sale?

I designed 4 dies for my first release in February this year. Basic designs but original and mine.

What job did you have BEFORE you started drawing/designing for a living?

Well I don’t really design for a living…I still consider it an extension of my creativity/hobby. I am currently on very very very long leave bringing up 2 boys, soon to be 3 and before that I was/am a Registered Nurse.

If you could hang out with ANYONE in the world….  who would it be?….and what is the one question you would want to ask them?

Honestly, it wouldn’t be anyone famous – though meeting someone like Cleopatra, Eva Cassidy or, even Robin Williams would be interesting.  I’d still choose to hang out with my Oma and I’d want to know her German plum cake recipe!

What is your favourite piece in the whole store?

It would have to be the corner dies. This was my first idea – and something I could get a lot of use out of when creating greeting cards/PL cards/scrapbook pages. I already had created the cards in my head before the die was even designed.

Who is your inspiration/muse?

I draw a lot of inspiration from my surroundings, buildings, architecture. I love geometric shapes, and Scandinavian design. I LOVE Pinterest (who doesn’t!!) I don’t necessarily have a muse or someone that personally inspires me, though I have a lot of admiration and respect for those who are in this industry, those who are still trying to make it, and especially those who are the ones designing behind the scene.

How many people work with/for you?

It’s just me! Though, I regularly bounce ideas off my best friend, sister, and husband. I am currently trying to poach my bestie (who DOES draw and SHOULD make a stamp set for me sometime this year! – If you’re reading this you did say yes? Right?)

What’s your guilty pleasure? Ice-cream, Ice-cream, Ice-cream! I’d eat ice-cream in the freezing winter (not that it really is ever that cold here in Adelaide) but that’s how much I love it!

If you suddenly changed careers and went to work at Disney…what character would you want to be?

That’s a lot of characters to choose from. I know I would NOT want to be a princess… way too much prep. work to get ready for the day! Sleepy the dwarf sounds like he would have a pretty sweet job! J

What is your most popular item in the store/shop?

Square Nesting Dies – TRIBAL I love hearing feedback from my products, and when I designed this die I wanted to be able to create a decent sized card with it. I think that this is why it’s been quite popular.

Who was your first celebrity crush…and have you drawn them?

Have not drawn them – and technically the crush was on a ghost… Casper who happened to turn in to Devon Sawa! If I remember correctly I had a really big poster of him on my wall growing up for the longest time. It’s still probably one of my favourite movies!

If you got locked in an elevator for 6 hours.. who would you most like to be locked in with?

Me, Myself and I! Did I mention I have 2 young boys and another on the way! 6 hours sleep – bring it!

Quick and easy “general” note card

This one isn’t designed for a specific occasion, it’s more of a note card, “Hi,  hello, I miss you” type of occasion. When I saw this image at Bloobel Stamps, I had to grab it….. anyone who knows me, knows I am a serious Tea Drinker.  I would be hooked up intravenously if possible LOL.

I found the poem on link that came up on a Google search for  “tea poems and quotes” and it just made me laugh and suits the quirky nature of the Bloobel Stamps to a tee…or in this case.. to a TEA.
