Playing with somethings new.. Mix Media, Resins, Silicon Molds and Woodburning

Some of you already know from the Facebook etc. that I have been playing around with  some new craft projects lately. Some of these are things I haven’t done in years… and really wanted to  get back into and share  with my son.  He is a little too young right now to be doing these crafts himself, but I see the look in his eye when he is “helping” mommy and I can tell he is itching to be able to do some himself.

I try and  make sure that a lot of my projects are things he can participate in…  even  at this age because as some of you know, I plan to homeschool him and creativity is a huge part of learning in this house.

So what have we been up to…. lots of experimenting…. as always haha.  Let’s just say  this mommy really should learn to wear latex gloves .. job hunting when your fingers look like Darth Maul… probably not the best idea haha.  I just get engrossed in what I am doing and I am not the most diligently prepared crafter haha..I like to spend my time being creative, not getting ready to create… but at least  have stopped crafting in my good clothes… there is hope for me yet!!!

One of the things we like to do is incorporate lots of different media, techniques and ideas into one project… boy do we !! lol  so lately we have been playing with resins, and woodburning.

We’ll be using these various project ideas and techniques throughout the coming year.. so be sure to subscribe if this is something you have wanted to try, or if you are a mix media artist who loves to decorate boxes, create unique artwork and wall hangings… this is going to be a lot of fun.

I picked up a woodburning iron last year and haven’t had as much time as I would have liked…. till now to actually play with it and get in some practice.  Now I get asked all the time, did you freehand that… NO… I cold only wish I was that artistic.  So I know there are others out there who would love to be able to do  projects like this, but feel  that they don’t have the artistic skills needed.. WRONG …. you just need to think outside of the box … a really nice wooden box…or blank, or frame… or anything else you fancy having a go at.

I was going to hold off on this post for a while till I had some full step by step projects to share….. but when I ran across this company Rockler Woodworking and Hardware doing a Google search for Branding Iron alphabets… I had to…. not only sign up for their  affiliate program, but I also found they do have a store near us and do classes and demo’s.. so you just know I am going to have to go check that out.

Now this company is mostly aimed at Woodcrafters.. which makes me drool since I no longer have any of the tools I used to have back in the UK… * sigh… BUT.. they also have a lot of cool products that are perfect for crafters  like me…and that is why I am sharing this with you all.

They carry a range  of Woodburning kits, including the alphabet irons I was looking for…. woot !!  these alphabet  sets thread into the iron just the same as regular tips.

They also have this gorgeous range of wood dyes that look perfect for an upcoming project next year.  You may have seen the burnt and inked blanks already… I am dying to try these out for that technique. I have a few wooden boxes  waiting to be  played with that would be perfect for this.

So stay tuned for some fun and projects and tutorials  early next year… maybe even a  video or two or 100 lol

Everything but the Cricut….and

..the varnish& glue came from Michaels craft stores….and that is just because I already had those  🙂 This is actually a project I made last year for  my self, but I think it would make a fab Abandoned Art piece, so I think I will make another one ..or two lol.

These are so easy and quick to make and you don’t have to use a state cut out mat frame, but it’s a fun idea if you want to.  It’s a cool project to do with  the kids too… the letters are all pre-cut, as are the wooden shapes. and they come in different fonts and shapes. You are sure to find something  that works no matter where you live, or what your theme is. These wooden shapes are cheap and plentiful and you can find those in any Michaels store.

Of course being here in Texas..  what else could I choose but a nice natural wood and a state of Texas photo mat.  You can pick up pre-cut mats, or buy sheets of it to cut your own… or  go without….whatever your preference and budget dictates. At $7 a sheet.. throw in a coupon… it aint looking so bad  now is it 🙂

The frame, letters and shapes are all readily available at Michaels and don’t cost an arm and a leg.   Slap on a quick swipe of  stain and voila..instant  personalized frame.   Fun piece to abandon… someone is gonna love your project and take it home and hang it on the wall with a family photo.. you wait n see.

If you don’t have stain lying around…  acrylic paints work great too, just water them down a bit and then  apply with a soft cloth and  then seal it.  That allows the wood grain to show through and with all the fun colors available…. sky’s the limit ! The selection of  unfinished wood pieces is awesome… frames, boxes, blanks .. so many options. Some of  my frames are like a $1 each, less if you are a nifty thrifty coupon wielding crafter….  so it doesn’t have to cost the earth to give the gift of a smile to someone.

Most all of the projects  in the Abandoned Art section  can be made for a couple of bucks or less and what price tag can you put on a smile on a strangers face ….and knowing you put it there 🙂texas_frame

Make someone smile today…. Abandon Away !

I am loving the blend of Chameleon and Zig Chalk Marker Writers so much, I am going to order the 6 pack so I can get my paws on a white chalk writer marker…. instead of using the calligraphy tipped one.

This was done with a Chameleon base and I intended to use the blue chalk marker as the highlight, but it actually ended up being darker than the base I laid down… but that worked out fine, as I just used it for low lights and added in white chalk marker for the highlights.

I think digitally printed skin tones and a mix of the Chameleon and Zig chalk Markers ….then Sakura and my multitude of gel pens…. throw in a little Wink of Stella and & Luna ..and I have my goto combo for coloring my KennyK‘s….and probably most of my other digis.  I have a tonne of them now too lol.

So I guess now I need to get some printed practice sheets knocked out … I’m pleasantly surprised by how easy hand coloring is with these pen sets…. admittedly very basic…. but still it’s hand coloring and I never thought I would ever be doing that with my abysmal lack of skills.  I always felt intimidated by all the pen sets and felt they were more suited to people who had already developed coloring skills …. but really… these pens are great for all levels.

Chameleon Pens

If anything I think they are a great choice for beginners, because the of the confidence factor and the blending, since beginners won’t already have a vast range of pens at  their disposal.  As a beginner it’s very easy to get intimidated and quickly put off the idea of hand coloring if you struggle to get results. These pens really do help a beginner  gain confidence very quickly…and that makes you want to continue and keep improving, instead of throwing them in a drawer and giving up.  I shall persevere with learning to color skin tones better… but  at least now hair is a whole lot easier than it was.

Zig Memory System Marker Collection

I discovered a bunch of other cool Zig pens which I now have on my Wish list… including some Embossing pens which should…. hopefully fit in the Amy Chomas adapter like the memory system pens do.  I can’t wait to get my paws on some of those and give them a whirl through my Cricut.

Some wood markers and wood stain markers… which will work great with my embossing on wood projects.

…and I also eyeballed some cool water based pens which might compliment my Gansai Tambi watercolor set.

Happy Birthday to me…….. Happy.. oh hang on.. my birthday is still months away… hmm maybe a Valentines present… late Christmas….. just because you love me… whatever works lol.  I am sure hubby will be thrilled to shop for crafting supplies… NOT haha

….time to dig out that Exclusive coupon and go shop 🙂

..as always....there are a mix of affiliate and non affiliate links in this post. I will be compensated for purchases made through the affiliate links

Great under $1, 30 minute gift idea for kids to make

This was just a quick little gift idea to make with your kids.wood_emboss

It’s very simple, just a piece of wood  stamped and embossed, colored with crayolas and then you can spray it with a clear acrylic sealer if needed.

Makes a great door, or wall hanger for the grandparents … if your kids are old enough to color between the lines it’s a super cute quick and cheap gift.   Just pop in some hooks and a chain…voila !!!  If they aren’t they can still stamp away…. my toddler stamps up a storm.

If you want to use clear embossing, you can use this as a resist and stain the piece instead.

Supplies were just some clear cling stamps, pigment ink, clear embossing powder and some wood  that comes in a 6 pack in most hobby stores for under $3… most stores have a selection of wood blanks so lots of shapes and sizes to choose from.

Makes a great all year round gift if you have the right selection of stamps.

Costs less than a $1 each to make… very quick project and super cute.
