Digi Artists Challenge September – November 2016

SEE UPDATES to the Challenge here

artist_challenge

Wow… Last quarter’s maiden Artist Challenge  got off to a slow start, I think everyone was either shy…or playing their cards VERY close to their chest.  But what a finish huh?  As a brand new concept and challenge, it’s natural that it will take time to pick up and gather momentum…but I had such a blast seeing all the fab Shakespeare inspired images…which of course by now are, or should shortly be available in the respective Artists stores… so be sure to check those out.

and the winners are… EVERYBODY… artists and crafters alike.  So congrats to  everyone on some fantastic new digis   <<INSERT APPLAUSE SOUND HERE …… LOL

This is a challenge for Digi Stamp Artists to play with new ideas, have some friendly competition and get the  creative juices flowing.  It’s a fun community art event which we hope will be a quarterly  occurrence.  It’s a new spin on the  old card challenge idea…  but now our favorite artists get to  play.

New artists are welcome too, if you are a new digi artist trying to get established and meet a fab group of established artists  and mentors, or an existing artist in need of some fresh fun ideas.  Come on in, the water is great.

Now onto the new challenge…. I ummed and agghed and ummed some more while trying to decide on a new theme.  It’s perfectly timed for a Christmas theme….BUT… all the artists usually have one of those running independently anyway..

The idea behind this challenge is to break out of the comfort zone and  so..without further ado.  The new theme is….

“In a state”

deadline midnight Central time November 30th, 2016

This is open to anything related to the theme ….and how you interpret it.  It’s pretty loose so there should be lots of room for  personal style in this one again.

I shall give a few ideas to show the flexibility of this theme ..and then you can run with it however suits you.

State of mind
State of shock
Texas themed
New Hampshire themed
Messy
State flower
State animal
State flags
State of emergency
State of confusion
State of undress <<<< someone will go there  LOL
Garden State
State of the Union
State fair

For those of you who like to draw characters, there are opportunities to practice facial expressions and body language.

For the quirky ones among you… again plenty of fun expressions to be had.

For the saucy ones… well no need to guess where you are going

For those of you who love animals, nature, floral and such… there  are plenty of ways to make that work too.

If you want to play and are stuck for ideas… you can always hit me up….I am full of crazy ideas lol.

Comb Bound Notepad with die cut floral cover

I was playing with one of my new CUP (CraftsUPrint) cut files I picked up with my Crafty Bob Crazy 5 minute Game winnings and decided to make another notepad.  This one will join my growing Abandoned Art project bucket.  I love the contrasting colors on this one, it’s very cheery and reminds me of Texas blue skies and the beautiful wild Sunflowers that are blooming all around us.

The covers are Recollections card stock, as are the two layers of cut out design. It has approx. 40 pages and is bound with a plastic comb binding.

The design is Floral Background Stencil with Mats and is available in various cutting machine formats.  Such a fun cheery cut design and suitable for all sorts of projects, lantern panels, card backgrounds,  decorative boxes.. so many options.

Framed Power Poppy Sunflower, on velvet with Chameleon Pens

I had another of the fab Power Poppy sunflower images printed out on velvet paper at the start of the month when I couldn’t decide which to use for my Crafty Awesomeness Challenge  DT project.   Colored this one up using Chameleon Pens, instead of pencil like the other one and mounted it in a very simple black frame from the local dollar store.  This one will be going in my “Abandoned Art” bucket, hopefully to be dropped, found and enjoyed in the very near future 🙂

Drop #8 Post Office counter…

crayola_do_over

The late Post Office I use to send out my packets is so cool… not only is everyone friendly and nice, despite working late… the service is sooo much quicker, my packets arrive at their destination way quicker than my local office.

The counter was unattended for a few seconds, so I took the opportunity to leave  one of the sunflower plaster of paris  rounds on the counter as I dropped my latest package in the mail boxes.

The lady working at that counter has a smile that could brighten anyone’s day… and if a customer found it first, hopefully it was a nice end to a long day for them.

Abandoned Art – drops 5,6 & 7 DFW TX

We dropped a few pieces tonight while we were out on a store run.. 3 more of the plaster rounds 🙂  Lil man was happy, he got a “secret mission AND M&M’s … mommy just got tired and sweaty lol.  We have 6 more pieces ready to drop later in the week…. a card, magnet, stamped tile, 2 more PoP rounds and a coaster.

We dropped  the glass jar with flowers on the self serve scales at a post office near the store.

This was the only one we managed to get a picture in situ…. without looking suspicious lol

This sunflower went on the counter of an apartment complex laundry room 🙂

and this  pooch was  popped beside a flower pot outside of a local veterinary office.  It probably won’t  get seen till Monday…. unless a passerby notices it, as it’s tucked behind the pot facing the office door.  It looks a bit different to this picture after it was sealed.. the colors are a bit different.more subtle.. but this is  the general idea.

The Texas stamp is a rubber stamp on an MDF coaster.

The inked piece is a Sherri Baldy digital stamp called Fancy Pants little Pixie on velvet paper with Adironack inks and Chameleon & Zig  Kurecolor markers.

Abandoned Art “Team N” Drop1 – DFW, TX

WOOHOOO… we snuck out and made our first drop near the mailboxes at an apartment complex in the DFW area of TX. It was too dark to take pictures without alerting everyone to the fact we were there .. I don’t need to be explaining this one to local PD at 9 PM haha
But this is what we dropped. Lil man had a blast on our “secret mission”
drop1
It is a  Plaster of  Paris round, stamped with rubber stamps and Stazon ink.  Colored with Adironack inks and Ranger Distress pen and clear coat lacquered with Mod Podge Acrylic Sealer.  The back was  covered with a felt disk using rubber cement glue.  More details on this project can be found here for anyone who wants to give this a try, great project for adults and kids to make stamping & coloring on Plaster of Paris

Everything but the Cricut….and

..the varnish& glue came from Michaels craft stores….and that is just because I already had those  🙂 This is actually a project I made last year for  my self, but I think it would make a fab Abandoned Art piece, so I think I will make another one ..or two lol.

These are so easy and quick to make and you don’t have to use a state cut out mat frame, but it’s a fun idea if you want to.  It’s a cool project to do with  the kids too… the letters are all pre-cut, as are the wooden shapes. and they come in different fonts and shapes. You are sure to find something  that works no matter where you live, or what your theme is. These wooden shapes are cheap and plentiful and you can find those in any Michaels store.

Of course being here in Texas..  what else could I choose but a nice natural wood and a state of Texas photo mat.  You can pick up pre-cut mats, or buy sheets of it to cut your own… or  go without….whatever your preference and budget dictates. At $7 a sheet.. throw in a coupon… it aint looking so bad  now is it 🙂

The frame, letters and shapes are all readily available at Michaels and don’t cost an arm and a leg.   Slap on a quick swipe of  stain and voila..instant  personalized frame.   Fun piece to abandon… someone is gonna love your project and take it home and hang it on the wall with a family photo.. you wait n see.

If you don’t have stain lying around…  acrylic paints work great too, just water them down a bit and then  apply with a soft cloth and  then seal it.  That allows the wood grain to show through and with all the fun colors available…. sky’s the limit ! The selection of  unfinished wood pieces is awesome… frames, boxes, blanks .. so many options. Some of  my frames are like a $1 each, less if you are a nifty thrifty coupon wielding crafter….  so it doesn’t have to cost the earth to give the gift of a smile to someone.

Most all of the projects  in the Abandoned Art section  can be made for a couple of bucks or less and what price tag can you put on a smile on a strangers face ….and knowing you put it there 🙂texas_frame

Make someone smile today…. Abandon Away !

Fort Worth Stockyards, TX – Art Abandonment Project

Well int that some $%#$%#$

I have lived in Texas just down the road from the Fort Worth Stockyards for 10 years now..and I have STILL never visited. It’s one of those places I always plan to visit, but just haven’t got round to…. but that will change.  The little guy is old enough to enjoy it now and  we have friends out that way…. and now I have the perfect excuse for a family outing to the Stockyards.  I just made a super simple picture frame,  which I hope one of the tourists decides they would love to put one of their photos from a visit in. It’s a  quick and easy project you can do with the kids and relatively cheap .. but still a cool find  for someone.

Description
Art Abandonment is a group designed to encourage random acts of art, left in various locations around the globe. The idea is that folks can make something and leave it for a lucky unsuspecting person to find. Artists can then post locations and photos of abandoned goodies…and finders can let everyone know that they are the lucky finder! O’ sweet abandon!”
