Well Hell… I didn’t know you could do THAT with a printer

I was playing around with some of my new  pens when I had a “moment”  ..it was one of those 3 am .. “I wonder what would happen if I….” moments that some of you have become used to on this blog.

If you have never tried this… you really should.  Some of you are so way beyond me in coloring skills and watercoloring.. so  this is more of a  technique project that an actual finished piece project. Obviously  to make a stunning piece you really need  to  take a bit more time  than I am going to on this video… but it will give you a good idea of what you can achieve.

The concept is the same as coloring with any other media..you still need to pay attention to your shadows and highlight placement.  But this is something  you can do no matter what your budget and get some really cool  pieces.   For these projects I am using Canson Mixed Media  paper pads, an Epson Eco Tank Printer and an H2o brush/fine art brush and plain tap water  and a  small artist brush.  Then you can, if you want add in additional  coloring media..such as pencils, inks, pens… to  take it up a notch.  I mainly use Chameleon Pens and Zig Kurecolor.. but will also be adding in a few extra and will note what I use by each image in future posts.  I have a few more samples I will share in follow up posts when finished 🙂

No matter what your skill level, this is something cheap and fairly quick to do and even a total novice can achieve some cool  finished projects.

Ok..so here we go…. here’s a  video to show you just how quick and easy this technique can be.  No Fancy nails, no fancy set up… just a down home quicky video… probably complete with a running commentary background from my 4 year old “director”  ** By the time I got to finish up the video etc ….My mini-me is tucked up fast asleep..but I am sure he will show up in future videos. He has been in a few previously…. did I mention we don’t do serious? lol

You will get used to him appearing in these videos..at least the audio…he’s a bit of a ham and hijacks all of my projects lol.  We  REALLY don’t do serious…. 🙂

ok ..so video first followed by a bunch of quick samples.

If you enjoyed this idea and decide to try it out, I would love to see what you do with it.  I’m going to play around with some color prints too ..just because I can..and I am curious to see how the colored ink reacts… so expect to see more  of this idea in future.

alyce

Who are you?

Alyce from Kit and Clowder Online Colouring Classes www.kitandclowder.com

Kit & Clowder Facebook Group

Kit & Clowder Blog

Where are you?

Australia!

When did you first start drawing/designing seriously

Just over two years ago when I turned Kit and Clowder from just my blog to our online colouring class website. Well, I was probably taking it still seriously before then making many many design team cards but I never dreamed that I would be doing this now with our classes 🙂

If you were getting a tattoo… what would it be?

I am so chicken! I would be like Phoebe in Friends where she went to get a tattoo and only got a dot before she pulled out hahaa! I don’t even know what I would get – a cat?

What was the first product you ever had for sale?

Our Skin and Hair class although both the content and the format has changed drastically since the launch!

skinandhair

Who is your inspiration/muse?

My inspiration is everyone who forms Kit and Clowder. I would not be doing this if it weren’t for all of the Clowdies that are part of our group. When I am feeling down I know that I can feel inspired and uplifted by flicking through our Facebook Group and seeing everyone’s work, and also when people post non-craft related stuff. It makes me feel excited that people like to share their lives with us and makes me want to share back.

How many people work with/for you ?

Just me 🙂 But Jon, Mr Clowdie, is my sounding board behind the scenes. I also have some really close friends that I have met since doing this that I know I can discuss about any topic/run through any idea and they 100% support me and tell me if my ideas are bad! 🙂

Name your favorite cartoon?

Oh my… everything Disney? Does Pixar count as cartoon? If we are going movie I would say Wall-e.. but if it’s cartoon tv it is Pokemon

5a7e49_73e4e7d61af9469cb763b1dc8a4e0a22

If you suddenly changed careers and went to work at Disney…what character would you want to be?

ELSA! Or Anna! Or Belle! Or Cinderella! Or Rapunzel! Or Pin Manager!

Which decade do you think had the best music?

90s!!! Spice Girls! hahaaa!

What’s your favorite hobby when you want to relax

I like to read, sing, or play computer games with Jon 🙂

If you were reincarnated…who would you have been in a former life.

Cat – fluffy cat wanting lots of cuddles and food

When no one is listening…. do you sing in the shower?

I sing in the shower, not in the shower, and frequently get caught out by the postman.

kit_class

What is your most popular item in the store/shop?

Our Skin and Hair Class

Who was your first celebrity crush…and have you drawn them?

Probably Angel from Buffy hahaa! No I haven’t drawn him hahaa!

If you got locked in an elevator for 6 hours.. who would you most like to be locked in with ?

Joss Whedon and we would talk all things Buffy/Angel/Firefly/Avengers 🙂

What’s your favorite color?

It changes all the time! I like Purple and Aqua at the moment 🙂 But I really love all colours and having bright colours around makes me feel happy 🙂

5a7e49_c03823ba2d274ae8bef5d23664acbf30

Would you go cave diving with sharks?

Uh not this question!! I am currently being persuaded into this for our Honeymoon O_O Sharks are one of my big fears and I think if I saw a Great White I would pass out in the water. I would say no but I think if I don’t say yes I won’t be getting married haha.

What was your favorite subject in school…?

English – I wanted to be a writer and I looove reading

When was your last REAL vacation and where did you go?

Disneyland! We went last year while teaching our US Retreats and it was the BEST!

If you got offered a weekend in a haunted  house/castle etc.. would you say yes?

Yes but I would be so scared! hehe! It really intrigues me because I feel there are so many stories and encounters for there not to be some sort of truth?

When you get the midnight munchies… what do you grab?

I have a bad habit of getting the coffee/chai latte sachets and halving them so I can get more drinks to keep me full! So I have many many of those to try and stop me eating everything in the house. But I usually still do – biscuits and chocolate 🙁

What is your favorite piece in the whole store? nature

Our new Elements of Nature class – I think it is our most professional class and also flowers and nature are really forgiving for people to colour. Skin and Hair is our most popular class but the actually topic itself is much harder so I think sometimes it’s nice for people to take a break and colour some flowers for some great results 🙂 I also love our Monthly Colouring Class as I feel that it really challenges me to come up with the content and I see the best results in this class. I see people improve the quickest here as they are challenging themselves.

Favorite quote?

If you are not failing every now and again, it’s a sign you aren’t doing anything very innovative – Woody Allen

What’s your guilty pleasure ?

Disney. everything.

What  job did you have BEFORE you started  drawing/designing for a living?

Interior Architect

5a7e49_44617ec4ca5b4b40abe46eb545cd99c1 5a7e49_ef07bbe3c09f4bcfa7f23dda73521712

What’s your favorite event, or holiday of the year?

Christmas – I love getting presents for people and get so excited to give them 😀 I can’t sleep on Christmas eve.

How long does the average design/art work take from concept to final product?

Our Technique Classes take about 2-3 months of straight working on them from concept, writing the material, colouring samples, filming, editing, and putting the actual classroom and graphics together. It’s a really long process! It takes longer now than when I first started as I still do our one on one feedback daily which takes a few hours, plus our monthly class, and all of the admin work. So a Technique class probably takes about 4-5 months now.

What’s the one song guaranteed to have you shaking your booty anytime, anyplace ..anywhere?

So many! I love all Taylor Swift 🙂 And anything cheesy hehe

What do you love most about all the people you meet through your work?

I love how supportive everyone is. I feel that people go out of their way to help one another and to make me feel welcome in their lives. I feel that I don’t have customers but I have friends and I’m so lucky to have met so many of our members now and know that we have a real friendship. I feel extremely lucky.

 Amazon Quirky Characters (Volume 1)”

Where are you ?

France

When did you first start drawing/designing seriously?

I worked as a “serious” artist from 2010 – 2013, I’d never do that again. I prefer art to be fun 😉

What  job did you have BEFORE you started drawing/designing for a living?

I was a software developer before I moved to France, and the last time I worked for a salary was on technical support for World of Warcraft, a video game.

If you could hang out with ANYONE in the world ….  who would it be?….and what is the one question you would want to ask them?

Stephen Hawking. I’d probably ask him a stupid question and spend my life mortified that I had embarrased myself.

What’s your favorite color?

Green.

What is your favorite piece in the whole store?

muchogrande

Thank you for the Flowers

Who is your inspiration/muse?

Cartoons like Sponge Bob, Oggy and the cockroaches, Video Games.

Name your favorite cartoon?

At the moment I’m watching Adventure Time, that is pretty cool. I like everything by Miyasaki.

Favorite quote?

“If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.” – Martin Luther King Jr.

What was your favorite subject in school…?

Maths. Funnily enough I didn’t like art at school, I found it restrictive and boring drawing pieces of wood and fruit.

If you were reincarnated…who would you have been in a former life?

A spider.

What is your most popular item in the store/shop?

I don’t know how long the bunny will be popular now that spring is over, but I think a lot of people who visit my store will like coffee whatever the weather.

Boingy Rabbit

muchogrande (1)

Need Coffee

Who was your first celebrity crush…and have you drawn them?

Danny Kaye. I never drew him, but I think his goofiness has inspired some of my characters.

If you weren’t doing what you are doing now…. what job would you have?

Software Developer. Although I’m a bit out of date these days. I do video game design on the side to keep my hand in.

What’s your favorite craftroom/business supply or tool that you couldn’t live without?

My mechanical pencil, if I don’t have at least 3 in the house at one time, I start to get nervous. I seem to have bought about 20 in the past year. I think my cats eat them.

If your parents had named you something else… what would you have picked?

Pollyanna. My mum wanted to name me that after the novel.

What’s the one song guaranteed to have you shaking your booty anytime, anyplace ..anywhere?

Bob Sinclar – Rock This Party (Everybody Dance Now) – oh my. It has the “everybody dance now” sample from the 90s, which makes me forget I’m over 40. I’m going to kill myself one of these days or break something.

Who scared you most as a kid when you were being naughty.. your parents or the boogey man?

I was nearly never naughty, but when I was it was the “disappointed” face of my mother that scared me the most.

Show me the drawing you think most closely resembles you physically or personality-wise

This is me multitasking, I wear lots of hats 🙂

muchogrande (3)

Carmen

What do you love most about all the people you meet through your work?

Everyone that I have met so far have been so nice. I think the crafting community really look out for artists and are very supportive. I really like that, rather than creating a “finished” product that people consume, digis are more like collaborating with hundreds of very individual artists all over the world, and I love to see how everyone interprets one image in their own way.

If you were a classic car…. what would you be?

I don’t know if I’d be it, but I always wanted to own a Chevy Camaro 69 SS.

When you are working, what is the view from your window like?

I’m lucky to have a big garden with trees and birds that play in them. Our garden is a bit unkempt so it’s a bit like living in a forest sometimes.

Which decade do you think had the best music?

70s Disco.

What’s your favorite hobby when you want to relax?

Independant video games, board games, gardening, sci-fi films, audible books about space.

Which drawing/product are you the most proud of in your collection?

This one was quite difficult to get the balance right, and I was quite proud of myself for even attempting the pose 🙂

Magic Slider Card Tutorial by Christina@Card Making Magic

A while ago I saw a fab  magic card, couldn’t for the life of me remember where though…. and then one of the girls in the facebook group shared her version of  the card.. it was awesome sauce!

Anywho, I went trolling around looking for some fun card tutorials to share with everyone and  share the love…  heh I have ZERO problems with promoting other crafters and bloggers. I have no need, nor desire to pretend I suddenly had a fab new idea and try and reinvent the wheel, when someone else has already made a fab tutorial and deserves some recognition  🙂

And tonight I want to share Christina from Card-Making-Magic.com’s Magic slider card, because I know it caught quite a few peoples eye when a  magic  card appeared on the group recently and a lot of people were interested in finding out how to do these.

So Check out Christina’s magic card tutorial… and don’t stop there… she has a tonne of fabulous  tutorials, both on this site and the Flowers, Ribbons and pearls blog.

My First Flipbook Snail Mail Card

Most of these flip book snail mail cards I have seen are craft  themed to send to fellow crafters, but I did something a bit different.  It’s still crafting, but not paper crafting… this one is for a sewer 🙂

Front Cover

Front Cover

I had fun doing this, even though I admit this was a second attempt, the first one was just way toooo bulky and  I had to change themes.  Originally the theme was going to be a leaving home/moving survival kit.  I also changed the base layout to this new one, which seems to have worked out better.

I will say that this is a project best shown in video, but unfortunately that isn’t possible right now with a houseful of people…. so the project is show in pics….  sorry !

Card base was made from two square Recollections cards joined to make a double flap book with only one taped seam.

  • Front Cover – Die cut patchwork using dies from some of my Sizzix Flip card sets, scraps and recycled buttons from old scrap clothing compliment this vintage style sewing image from Cute as a Button “Sewing Susan”. She is colored in Zig Kurecolor and Ranger Distress pens. I was tempted to color her shoes royal blue, as the recipient has a pair almost exactly like these that she wore to a vintage wedding…and her own,  but I decided not to.
  • Image1 – Inside flaps Left: Flap featuring Cute as a Button “Button Love”  colored with Chameleon, Zig Kurecolor, Zig Memory system Brushables and Ranger Distress pens.  Corners punched with a Fiskar corner punch design and the image was  dry brushed with Smart Craft inks. (Image 2 shows what is beneath the image flap) Right Flap: Patchwork scraps with a  Khaki fabric pocket to hold buttons, this is a pocket I reclaimed from an old pair of maternity pants… 🙂  It’s from the side leg/knee and perfect size for this project.  The recipient used to wear combat boots and camo’s,  so it’s the perfect fabric for the personal touch.
  • Image 2 – The stamp on the inside was triple stamped and  colored with Zig Kurecolor and distress pens..and yes the blurry image is intentional… my girl likes a glass of wine…. or two  LOL. The lacy edging on the sequin and bead pack is a Martha Stewart corner/border set punch and the bear is an iron on  patch.
  • Image 3 – The bear flips down to reveal two needles attached to the back.
  • Image 4 – The main flap opens to reveal a  mini CD pocket, this could  contain photos, images, video message etc. This is housed in a pocket that is one of my shaker card window frames that I had pre-cut on my Cricut. I just scored some folds and  used those flaps to  glue it to the base. The other page is just a patchwork stamp, colored in Ranger distress pens with a smile stamp and some silly eyes.. for fun.
  • Image 5 – This has a vellum window made from 29lb Vellum Paper  cut with a Gina Marie Stitched Rectangle Die Set  and sports a gold glittery Gina Marie Bow Die for decor and contains some felt pieces I die cut. The opposite side shows a letter which is folded and attached to the card.  The page is decorated with a sewing reel  and buttons stamps, colored with  Ranger distress pens.
  • Image 6 –  The letter is printed using a handwriting font, added in a second button stamp and some decorative corners and inked edges to match the Button Love” image
  • Image 7 –  Open letter to show folds, this was a fake letter for show purposes.
  • Back Cover –  Just a very simple  wavy edge bar with decorative corners, some label dies that came free with some cutting plates and a stamp from Michaels bargain buckets.

This flip book was fun to make, I learnt a lot from doing this project,  mostly that I don’t have nearly enough supplies LOL and that  a project like this can be adapted to so many other themes, not just paper craft swap mail.  I think it would be a fab card project for kids cards.  I may have to try one of those for my granddaughter next 🙂

DT CALLFlip Book Cards are one of the application requirements over at Cute as a Button’s current DT call.. for anyone interested  🙂
