12×12 Framed Scrapbook page

I love messing around with  12×12 …. but I am not a scrapbooker.  I prefer to frame them and use them as art instead, so…. here’s another fun framed art.. very simple but cute.
The image was print and cut on the Cricut Explore, colored with Chameleon Pens and then attached with Zig 2 Way glue to a 12×12 sheet of paper I acquired from a fellow crafter who was de-stashing.

There is plenty of room  for a poem, or a Sentiment if so inclined …

Crafty Haul – Pick me up.

It’s been a crazy few months here and me and the little man decided it was about time to have a lil pick me up splurge.   I had an appointment today and lo and behold… it was bang right next door to Hobby Lobby, a new one we have never been to before.  But one we shall most definitely be going back to. Their clearance and sale selection was great…and even better…. the shopping spree was a gift.  Can’t beat that kinda gift 🙂

But it’s been a busy week all round so we had a little splurge to spoil ourselves and get ready to  get down to business with more new Abandoned Art Projects and Christmas gifts etc. We picked up a whole bunch of really great deals..so expect to see a lot of this in upcoming posts.

We’ll be sticking and stamping, coloring and woodburning and allsorts of craziness.  so many fun techniques to play with… he’s sure to have fun !

Check out this little pile of goodies.. Tim Holzt inks, stamps, stickers, some really cool Christmas tissue paper and ..I couldn’t resist this awesome paper pad by the Paper studio at 50 %.  there are a couple of extra son the pic that didn’t come from Hobby Lobby.. like the printable vellum and the Gina Marie dies and bling….and a bunch of clear stamps that I picked up.. but can’t show YET lol. And I have a shipment on it’s way over .. which I can’t wait to get and show you all…. but it could be a few weeks before that gets here.

But the best  part of todays haul…. my son, who is 5 … found a flower in the clearance section … and absolutely insisted we had to buy it … because he wanted to give mommy a flower and he thought I would like it.

he was wrong… I didn’t like it…

I LOVED IT!!!!

….. he made my insides go as gooey as chocolate brownie… It was one of those moments you just wish would never end. It’s not the greatest picture… sorry…. but this mommy is happy as a clam.  This is the most beautiful flower any man … or “little” man has ever given me…and it was offered with love,… not as a bribe, not as an apology … or any other reason I have ever had flowers given..it was given just  because he thought I would like it and it would make me smile.

..and I am still smiling  🙂

Wahooo…… I’m BACK …with a splash !!

Well I finally got time to really sit down and actually color, admittedly it was a quickie session… but I got to color and dang but it feels good. Here is a really cool image by Cute As A Button “Bathtub Mermaid” and as if you didn’t guess already… yup I gave my new Chameleon Pens Color Tops a whirl. Add on a splash of Sakura Gelly Roll for some glitz and glam and detailing.. and voila!

I mounted her on a ply wood art tile/canvas  using double sided sheets of adhesive tape and inked up the edges with 3 tones of Color Smart Ink pads.  I’ll add a protective waterproof layer before hanging her in the bathroom.

This is my challenge image for July for the Cute As A Button Challenge Blogspot… come on over and play

Make your own portable mini desktop easel with storage

A while back I bought a bunch of these  cute little wooden boxes .. the idea was to use them to A: decorate and B: for storing some of my loose pens.  Well .. as you do, it just suddenly hit me.  I had the perfect portable storage to take my pens anywhere, but of course being me.. I hate coloring flat.  I built a super simple desktop easel last year using an offcut spare bit of shelving and two of my sons triangular wood blocks from his building set LOL.
Fabulous little thing.. I use it all of the time… but it’s not exactly idea if you  want to work on odd surfaces like the park benches with the wire tops… but THIS.. now THIS would work. I have had my pens in this box for a few months now and it never even occurred to me till NOW  lol.  I have everything I needed to make a portable easel with storage for my pens.. all I had to do was throw a handle on it if desired and  build the easel portion.  Pff .. NO brainer lol.. TA DA !!! 5 minutes and one pack of popsicle sticks later and I have  my portable easel which could be multi-positional if desired.
Right now I have a flexible band across the top holding extra pens.. but you could store pencil sharpeners, pre printed images or any extras in there as needed by adding an insert with elastic loops, or plastic pockets   These boxes are plenty big enough for a 72 set of pencils and  more if you were to include the top section by adding a strap.  It can be done with any size box, but  this one was  already here and already filled so I chose to use this one for the project. It is approx 8.5×8.5 and  3/4 -1 inch deep at the bottom and 1/2- 3/4 inch deep at the top.
I cut 3 different lengths of Popsicle for different working angles and just stored them inside.. but if this were something you would use a lot you could easily add all 3 angles permanently by fixing them to the box with a nut and bolt and or use metal bars which you can find at the DIY store and just fold out the one you wanted ( think Swiss Army pocket knife lol )
I added a Popsicle to the top with a strip of commercial grade double sided tape to give the paper a resting place so I wouldn’t have to use pins on it to stop it sliding.  I might replace that with a cute little wooden ruler I have once I cut it to size.
Just be sure to seal your box top to protect your wood and /or decor if you decide to  fancy it up; and carry a spare piece of card or something to act as a barrier and give a little padding beneath your project.  There are lots of options for  decorating the top  including a frame with a permanent perspex window,  or a slide in .. hell if you wanted to get fancy .. you could  make a cut out…frame in a sheet of perspex and pop a  battery operated light inside..VOILA !!! portable light box included.
You can take this base project idea  which will knock you back about $5 for the box and  a couple of bucks for Popsicle sticks if you don’t have them…. and totally go to town and personalize your portable easel… make it as quick and simple or  hi-tech and permanent as you want.  Possibilities are endless.

….anywho.. maybe someone out there will have a need for a portable easel with storage and not want to spend a gazillion bucks on one… so .. here you go..something to think about next time you are aimlessly wandering the aisles, coupons in hand.

.. you are welcome   🙂

This is exactly the same kind of box I used in a previous project, with the big cockerel on it.. for anyone who saw that post

Vintage Cockerel Style Wooden Keepsake box.

Did you know CraftsUPrint have digi’s too.. who knew !!

I had seen one or two of them before..but didn’t realize just how many they have.

There is one artist in particular who has some real fun images.  I grabbed a bunch and had a little coloring fun last night. These were print and cut on the Cricut Explore on 110lb card, the colored with various pens…. Chameleon Pens, Zig Kurecolor and some new detailer pens I grabbed to try by Sargent Arts & Sharpie.

I made these up into a couple of cards and a frame for one of my small watercolored stamps I got from LDRS Creatives this past week… lots of fun designs so if you are looking for some character Digi’s and haven’t found what you were looking for, check them out.  The artist is Gordon Fraser and you can find his gallery here Gordon Fraser – CraftsUPrint Designer.

I have a bunch more of these fun digi’s  to get colored up… so expect to see more from this artist in the coming month.

My latest happy mail. Zig Kuretake Manga Art goodies

I saw something on a live video from CHA that I wanted to try out; I had no idea what they were using on the demo as far as pens and tips went, but I figured I wanted to try it bad enough.. so I grabbed ALL of them lol. Typically these pens are used for Manga art and inking in illustrations, but I saw them or…. something like these used for something else entirely and I wanted to have a play.

Admittedly I will probably use them for the intended use as well.. now that Steve over at CraftingAbility popped in a few extras for me to try out. I wasn’t expecting a beginners guide to drawing Manga to be tucked into my order and a new Manga Pen I haven’t tried yet… but heh.. why not .. LOL.

I had a quick flick through the booklet and it has some easy beginner examples and guides .. some info on drawing faces, clothing folds, shadows and highlights and lightsource so all the basics we learn in drawing and coloring. So, maybe I’ll have a little play with that. I don’t draw by any stretch of the imagination.. but even I like to doodle now and then. Usually when I am on the phone chatting haha..I am notorious for doodling on anything at hand haha.

Now bear in mind I have not used an ink pen in YEARS.. so it will take some practice to get used to working with ink again.  But I am excited to play with these and then try out that idea I saw at CHA.  I have quite a few different Zig Kuretake products, as you know if you are a regular …  some bought, some provided free of charge for testing and to provide projects for review….and so far.. I have not been dissappointed in anything. Seriously.. I refuse to say something is great if I don’t like it…so when I say I like it or LOVE it as is most often the case… I mean it.  Now anyone who is a regular knows I like to experiment and play with allsorts of ideas, and that I love trying new techniques..so  take into account your own personal styles and  tastes when  picking products.. what suits one does not suit all.

Ok so what did I order...everything on this page lol…

I picked up the pen nib holder… can’t do much without one of those lol. It’s a nice lacquered wood with a rubber grip.  I have to admit I am not a big fan of pens with rubber grips usually, but this one is nice and comfy and I don’t feel like I am getting stuck on it when I move my fingers around like some.  I have hypermobile joints and sometimes my hands lose grip when they flare up…. but  just playing with it out of the packet.. it seems to be something I’ll work fine with.  It’s not too fat , nor to thin and the rubber grip is smooth.. haha I sound like I popped out of Goldilocks and the three bears ..oops

I picked up a pack of each of the nibs to test them out, since I really didn’t know which ones would work best for what I have in mind, plus a selection of nibs would be useful for a few other things I had in mind… all of which you will see in posts coming this month.. maybe even a few short vids for a bit of fun.

I’ll share more on the Manage Drawing guide and Manga Flexible Pen in another post.

Time to burn your rubber stamps?

Not literally !! lol

I picked up this Walnut Hollow Creative Woodburner Pyrography tool at Michaels Stores with a coupon the other day on one of my bargain ventures..it’s just a cheapie one and comes with 4 tips.  I wasn’t sure if I would still enjoy it; or get to use it much, so didn’t want to spend too much… but it’s actually a nifty little tool. I haven’t done any pyrography since I was in my 20’s …. and it shows lol. But I think I’ll be having a play with this and all the wood blanks I seem to collect haha.

You don’t have to be a fab artist to enjoy pyrography there are a tonne of patterns available..and if you just want a quick way to get a design on your piece… grab your stamps and an ink pad.  Alternatively, use the method I showed in a previous post  to transfer the design using your printer and a laminating sheet.

I had a quick play and just used this W174 Patient Pup stamp I picked up on Christmas Clearance and a brown pad to stamp this lightly on the back of my desktop easel for a guide..gave it a quick wash of color with some markers when I was done.

another fun way to use all of those fab stamps in your collection… practise practise practise !

Image transfer on wood using laminating sheets

This is probably the shortest project post I have ever written..and that is because it’s soooo simple but kinda cool. I wanted to try something new and so I printed my image onto a laminating sheet. Be sure to feed it fold edge first if you try this:)

Once I had my print out I placed it on a wood blank and used my brayer to transfer the image..and then I colored it with my new Crayola Color Escapes pencils.  I am pretty sure this is NOT what they had in mind when they made these pencils.. but  they do a great job on so many surfaces… why not ???

I didn’t want to make this project overly ornate..I just wanted to  have the image on it’s own. But you could easily take this technique and inject it in to a bigger, fancier Mixed Media project, if that is what you wanted to do.

My best advice would be…. tape the image down when you go to transfer it to avoid slipping and sliding on smooth surfaces.  I didn’t do that and got a bit of ghosting in places.. but to be honest, with the look I was going for and using pencils..  it really didn’t  make a huge difference.  You don’t get sharp clean heavy lines anyway, it’s more like working on a no lines coloring project.

anywho, fun technique to play with and  definitely something I’d like to experiment with a bit more.  It makes for some rather cool wall decor  🙂

This is my latest DT Project for Cute As A Button Challenge Blog .. come play !!!

Unplanned Michaels haul.. WHAT A DEAL !

We went out for dinner and I decided to swing by Michaels just to grab a  frame and check out clearance..and OMG I am so glad I did.  I almost changed my mind.

I just had one of the best hauls ever…..

For the first time Michaels have started doing Grab Bags at the local store.. at least it’s the first time I have ever seen it.  I have seen small ones at Joann before, mostly stickers and embellishments.. but I am talking SWAG BAG grab bags .. lol.. these are their large bags.

I wasn’t going to grab one because I had the lil guy with me and  people had pretty much ripped them all open to see what was inside..and it would have been hard to grab one without dropping everything and keeping an eye on lil man. But while I was at the register I went ahead and grabbed one since they were right next to it and the cashier was someone I know well enough ( yes I shop there too often LOL ) to trust him to keep an eye on my kid for 2 seconds !

Now I confess I picked up this particular one because I saw something it it I had wanted to try..and that alone was  worth the price of the grab bag LOL.  Mambi paper, I had seen it on Christmas clearance but wasn’t ready to grab something I hadn’t used before and wasn’t sure of, when I had plenty of other things to spend on.  But this bag was ripped open and it had 4 packs of it on show.. so heh… what am I ..a saint?? that was at least $40 worth of paper.

so here is my $4 grab bag from Michaels..

4 packs of 9×13 (24 sheet) Mambi Paper
22… yes 22 pocket/purse calendars for 2017 which will be great for Abandoned Art  projects with some quick fun decoration.
27…TWENTY SEVEN canisters of Scentsicles… lol not sure what to do with all those.. but heh.. I am sure I will think of something.  the containers might be useful for decorating  if nothing else.
A pair of knitting needles
2 black pom poms which I forgot to add to the picture.
a pack of rhinestone letters and a metal sentiment
2 silver block letters ..about 4-5 inches high

so at least $100 worth of goodies at original prices.. for  FOUR DOLLARS !!!

Then… we move on to bag #2 this was the stuff I actually picked up myself..

12×12 undecorated wood frame
2 packs of Chipboard albums ( big and small album in each pack )
clearance wood stamp
clearance cling stamps X8….8 Hampton Arts cling stamp sets
4  undecorated frames for the lil man.

Would you believe both bags… cost me just under $33 and contained at least $200 worth of goodies at original pricing. Between the grab bag, the clearance pricing and the coupons… THIRTY THREE DOLLARS !!!

I have to say I am thrilled to see Michaels doing the grab bags instead of dumping all the left over Christmas stuff that didn’t clear. Not just because it is such a fab deal for people like us who do multi crafts and who do abandoned art and kids art… but because I HATE WASTE.  So good on Michaels for trying to find a better way to dispose of their unsold holiday stuff!!! and give customers a great deal… some of us really appreciate it. ME ME ME ME ME ME ME

Anywho.. one very happy camper… just a shame that hubby works a double tomorrow.  I think if he was single shift, I’d go back for another grab bag. I am not sure if this is a storewide thing, I know it is being done in another store near by… but I would definitely check and see if your local store is doing them if you are running by one.

If you swing by and find a grab bag, be sure to share your haul ..I would love to know what everyone else got 🙂

Vintage Cockerel Style Wooden Keepsake box.

Well this sure was an interesting departure from the card making for me. I had a lot of fun ..and let’s be honest, a lot of crude humor moments with this one.  Just be glad I didn’t do a Video Tutorial or Facebook Live with this one. Sometimes my humor is on the level of a 8 year old boy..   what can I say… some things are just always gonna be funny…. specially at 3 am LOL.

Anyways…. humor aside, I picked up these cheap wood boxes at Walmart on my milk excursion the other night.  I also picked up something I had seen a few times before and ALMOST picked up .. but never did.  I grabbed some Iron on Transfers from the fabric sewing section.  Now most of you will have probably seen these before so will know what I am talking about.. those of you who don’t… these are  sheets  with multiple designs on them. You cut out the one you want and iron it onto fabric and use it as your pattern/guide to embroider images.  They are cheap, and reusable… and come in a gazillion designs of all themes and sizes.

I picked up some cockerels/roosters, chicks and chickens…. chooks to you Aussies.  A set of vintage cars and a set of butterfly and flower designs.   Each sheet usually has about 10-15 or so designs depending on what you buy and these cost me 97 cents a sheet in Walmart.  Designs are limited in my Walmart, but the company has a tonne of designs to choose from.

I am not going to bore you with step by step explanations.. it’s pretty simple… iron on the pattern.. I drew the checkered background with a ruler … color with pencils.  I drafted out a color scheme first for visual reference.. stain, age, wax  or seal  & photograph.  Line if desired….DONE !!!

I plan to add some metal corners to this one, but I don’t have them yet.. I also have a second box which I am currently converting into a place to store my Zig pens..stay tuned for that one.

Supplies

Medium –  Wood blank
Design – Iron on transfer Aunt Martha’s – colonialpatterns.com

Pencils – I used my new Crayola Color Escapes premium pencils
Misc.  – Distress ink, ink pads  tim Holtz alcohol inks, distress pads and Craft Smart black Dye ink pad , candle wax, heating tool and old face clothe, Ruler, Iron

I definitely plan to do more of these…  The vintage car one looks  like it could be very cool for some manly gifts  and I shall be checking out more patterns.
